A search ranking still tells you where a page appears in conventional results, but it does not show every way that page may surface in an AI-generated answer. Google Search Console now reports impressions from generative AI features in Search and Discover, while Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations and cited URLs across supported AI experiences. These are different platform-specific observations—not a universal AI visibility rank, nor proof of traffic or business impact.
Why a search position is an incomplete visibility measure
A traditional search position describes a page’s placement in a list of results for a query. AI answer experiences can instead draw on pages and cite them in a generated response. Google says its generative AI features use Search systems to retrieve relevant pages and provide supporting links; its query fan-out process can also generate related searches to build a broader answer. A page’s conventional position therefore does not, by itself, tell you whether it appeared as a supporting link or citation in an AI feature.

That distinction matters because “visibility” is not a single event. An impression in a Google AI feature and a citation in a Bing AI experience are counted differently. Neither metric on its own establishes that a user clicked, that a page ranked prominently, or that a citation led to a business result.
What Google Search Console measures
Google reports AI-feature traffic within Search Console’s Web Performance data and also provides a Generative AI performance report. The report includes impressions and page and country views, with device breakdowns for Search and date intervals. Google said the report’s worldwide rollout to all websites was completed on August 31, 2026. See Google’s AI features documentation and its report announcement.
#1 Best Overall
Use the report to identify pages receiving AI-feature impressions and examine how those appearances vary across the dimensions it provides. An impression is evidence of appearance in the reported feature; it is not evidence of a click, a particular ranking or prominence within an answer, or a conversion.
What Bing Webmaster Tools measures
Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance dashboard reports citation counts, average cited pages, sample grounding queries, cited URLs and trends. Microsoft announced the dashboard as a public preview on February 10, 2026. Its documentation explicitly cautions that citation counts reflect how often pages are cited, not page importance, ranking or placement. See Microsoft’s AI Performance announcement.
Microsoft announced additional preview capabilities—Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare—on June 16, 2026. Citation Share describes the portion of citations attributed to a site for a grounding query. Microsoft calls it observational, not a ranking system or competitive scoreboard. These features add ways to inspect citation patterns, but they do not turn citations into a measure of traffic share or authority. Details are in Microsoft’s expanded reporting announcement.
How the two reporting systems differ
| Dimension | Google Search Console | Bing Webmaster Tools |
|---|---|---|
| Primary observation | Impressions in generative AI Search and Discover features; pages shown | Citations and cited pages across supported AI answer experiences |
| Additional detail | Country, date intervals and, for Search, device breakdown | Sample grounding queries, page-level citations and trends; preview features for intents, topics, citation share and comparisons |
| Availability stated by provider | Google reported worldwide rollout to all websites completed August 31, 2026 | AI Performance announced as a public preview; expanded reporting capabilities described as a global preview rollout |
| Interpretation limit | An impression does not establish a click, rank or business outcome | Citation counts and citation share are observational, not rankings or traffic share |
Do not compare a Google impression directly with a Bing citation as though they count the same event. The systems cover different experiences and define their metrics differently.
How to use the data without overreading it
- Use each platform for its own observation. In Search Console, inspect which pages receive AI-feature impressions and use the available country, date and device dimensions. In Bing Webmaster Tools, inspect cited URLs, sample grounding queries and citation trends.
- Keep the measures separate. Track impressions, citations, conventional search positions, clicks and downstream business outcomes as distinct measures. The official reporting descriptions do not establish one cross-platform AI visibility score or a causal link between citations and visits or sales.
- Investigate changes rather than assigning a cause immediately. Microsoft notes that citation patterns can shift with model changes, freshness, partner refresh cycles, demand and changes elsewhere on the web. A trend is a signal to examine, not proof that a particular edit caused the change.
- Compare like with like. When looking across periods, account for the platform, surface, metric definition, available query and page detail, geography, device, time interval and preview status. A change in coverage or reporting status can affect interpretation.
What to do to improve the chance of being included
Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode build on core Search ranking and quality systems. Pages must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to be considered for supporting links; eligibility does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index or serve a page. Google’s guidance is to focus on the fundamentals:
- Make pages crawlable and indexable, and follow Google Search policies.
- Publish helpful, reliable, people-first information.
- Make important information available as text, with clear internal linking and a good page experience.
- Use relevant images and video where they help readers understand the content.
Google says there are no special AI schema requirements or additional optimizations needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. It also says publishers do not need special AI files such as llms.txt, forced content “chunking,” or rewrites made solely for AI systems. Google’s advice is to create pages for the audience rather than target an ideal length. Unsupported AEO or GEO tactics should not be treated as confirmed Google ranking factors. Its guidance is available in AI Features and Your Website and Google’s Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features on Google Search.
Rank #4
What these metrics cannot tell you
The Google and Microsoft reports describe platform-level appearances and citations. They do not provide a common cross-platform ranking, prove that a cited page generated a visit, or establish that appearing in an AI answer causes more traffic, leads or sales. The official sources cited here also do not establish a general percentage by which AI answers have changed site traffic, rankings or conversions. Treat the dashboards as diagnostic views of specific platform activity, then evaluate clicks and business outcomes with the measures suited to those outcomes.
