If Samsung Gallery photos on an SD card won’t open, first find out whether the problem is the image file, the card, or Gallery’s ability to display it. In My Files, locate the photo on the SD card and try to open it; then test another file on the card and try the photo in a different app. Those checks help distinguish an unreadable card from a Gallery-only problem, and they avoid jumping to a fix that could erase your pictures.
First determine whether the problem is the photo, the SD card, or Gallery
Samsung recommends checking whether other files on the card open and trying the image in another app. If the photo opens in My Files or another viewer but not in Gallery, focus on Gallery visibility and access. If multiple files fail or the phone reports a card error, investigate the card itself.

For a gray square or exclamation-mark thumbnail, Samsung’s Russian support guidance likewise recommends checking whether other files on the card open. Restarting the phone and trying another app, such as My Files or Google Photos, can help isolate the issue. Samsung Russia: photos in Gallery do not open.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the photo is accessible but missing from Gallery

- Check hidden albums and files. Review Gallery’s hidden-album settings and look for a
.nomediafile in the image folder; its presence can keep media from appearing in Gallery. - Look in Trash. Check both Gallery Trash and My Files Trash, and restore any pictures you want to keep.
- Check Downloads. Samsung directs users to look under Albums > Downloads for images that do not appear where expected.
- Check folder access. If Gallery cannot access the folder, copy the photos to a Pictures folder supported by the device.
- Review permissions. Make sure Gallery is allowed to access photos and videos.
- Open grouped images. Gallery may automatically group similar images under one thumbnail. Open the group or use the ungroup option to inspect its contents. Grouping can make an image appear absent, but it does not explain an image that fails to open.
Samsung’s Gallery guidance covers these visibility checks, including hidden content, Trash, Downloads, folder placement, and permissions. Samsung US: pictures missing from Gallery but visible in My Files. Steps and menu labels can vary by model and software version.
If the SD card itself is unreliable
- Safely remove and reinsert the microSD card. Power off the device if appropriate for your model, remove the card, check that it is seated correctly, then reinsert it and see whether the phone recognizes it consistently.
- Test it in another device. A computer or another phone can help determine whether the card is readable elsewhere. Keep in mind that a PC may support file systems Android does not, so a card that works on a computer is not automatically compatible with the phone.
- Protect files you can still access. Copy important photos and other files to another storage location before attempting a destructive fix.
- Replace the card only if errors persist. Samsung says a malfunctioning card can cause data loss and may need to be removed or replaced. Confirm that your specific Galaxy model supports microSD and check its manual for the supported capacity; there is no single capacity limit established for all Galaxy devices.

Back up before formatting or clearing Gallery data
Do not format the card as an early experiment if it contains the only copy of important files. Samsung warns that formatting erases data stored on the card and recommends backing up important data first. Formatting may resolve some errors, but it is not a safe way to diagnose a card when its photos have not been saved elsewhere. If important files remain inaccessible after non-destructive checks, a reputable data-recovery specialist may be an option; recovery is uncertain, and Samsung does not promise that files can be restored.

Clearing Gallery data is also not a harmless first step. Samsung Russia warns that this resets Gallery settings, separates grouped folders, and deletes photos in Gallery Trash. Before trying it, restore or back up any Trash items you want to keep. Samsung’s page, last updated 4 May 2026, describes this step and its effects: Samsung Russia: photos in Gallery do not open.
