Rohit Roy says his “dustbin medium” remark was about the quality and repetition of Indian television content, not an attack on any individual performer. After backlash, he said some younger actors took a headline personally without watching the full interview. He also stood by his claim that several people who criticized his comments had not worked as hard as he had on TV.
What did Rohit Roy mean by “dustbin medium”?
In an interview on the Kindle Cast YouTube channel, Roy was asked whether television had become more professional while losing devotion to craft. As reported by Hindustan Times on October 3, 2026, he described TV as disposable and repetitive, arguing that too much content was being made without enough creativity or attention to quality.

In his clarification to ANI, carried by Hindustan Times, Roy explained: “When I say dustbin medium, what it basically means is that we make anything and put it on TV and say that people will watch it.” He added: “Whoever is creative, whoever wants betterment of television, we tell you that the content today we are churning out is not up to the mark.”

He attributed some of the backlash to younger actors reacting to a clickbait headline without watching the full interview. That is Roy’s account of what happened; the report does not independently establish what each person saw or identify every actor involved.
What was behind “They didn’t work as hard as I did”?
After saying he had not criticized a particular person, Roy referred to “3-4 people who commented on TV” and said: “They didn’t work as hard as I did on TV.” He also said he had television’s best interests at heart and had fought for the medium for 30 years.

- Roy’s explanation was that “dustbin medium” referred to television content he considers repetitive, insufficiently creative, or below the mark.
- He said he was criticizing the content, not a particular actor, director, or producer.
- His explanation of younger actors’ reactions comes from his account as relayed by news reports. The original Kindle Cast interview and an accessible original ANI transcript were not available in the cited coverage, so the quotations here are attributed to Roy as reported rather than independently checked against recordings.
Hindustan Times also identified Chumbak as Roy’s current series. An ANI-syndicated report published October 2, 2026 said it was streaming on Netflix at that time; availability can vary by territory and date. Webindia123’s ANI-syndicated report gives that availability detail.
