Why Riders Are Choosing Electric Dirt Bikes—and When Gas Still Wins

Electric dirt bikes appeal to riders who want quieter operation, simpler controls and fewer engine-specific maintenance tasks. Those advantages can matter especially for young learners and short rides, but they do not prove electric bikes are outselling gas models. The better choice depends on the rider, route, ride length and access to charging or fuel.

Are electric dirt bikes really winning?

“Winning” is better understood as winning over some riders, not as a proven market trend. The available evidence does not establish that electric dirt bikes are outselling or displacing gas bikes. It does show why particular riders may prefer electric: some models offer selectable power modes, simplified controls and quieter operation. Whether those benefits outweigh charging and ride-time limits depends on the riding day.

It is also important to compare bikes in the same class. The strongest official specifications available here are for the GASGAS MC-E 5, a youth motocross bike. Its figures and features should not be treated as representative of adult trail or race bikes.

What makes an electric dirt bike appealing?

Simpler controls can help newer riders

The GASGAS MC-E 5 has a single-speed transmission and no clutch or conventional gearbox. It also offers six selectable ride modes, which can help adults tailor power delivery as a young rider develops. The model is intended for learners through young competitors; its controls do not establish that every electric bike is easier to ride.

#1 Best Overall

  • Ultimate Battery Safety: The IN10 e dirt bike features an advanced BMS system that safeguards every charge and every ride. Its removable, long-range battery delivers up to 53 miles of range—powering extended adventures with confidence and ease.
  • Premium Full Suspension: Rear nitrogen shock delivers faster response, smoother comfort, and long-lasting durability. Paired with a 220mm-travel front hydraulic fork, the IN10 ebike maintains stable, consistent damping—even through long, demanding rides.
  • Reliable Stop System: IN10 electric bike’s braking setup pairs advanced EABS with hydraulic disc brakes for powerful, precise stopping. Even on dusty or muddy terrain, it delivers stronger braking force and smoother control—keeping every ride confident and steady.
  • Note: Before riding, please ensure that the brakes/wheels and other devices of the IN10 ebike are installed correctly. Before purchasing, check the local legal age or license requirements to ensure legal use. Teens should operate the bike only under adult supervision and must follow all local safety regulations.

Quieter operation can be useful—but check site rules

Electric motors operate more quietly than gas engines, which can make them attractive where engine noise is a concern. Quiet does not automatically mean a bike is permitted on a particular trail or property. Check local access rules and the riding site’s requirements before buying.

Fewer engine tasks, not maintenance-free ownership

An electric bike avoids gasoline-engine tasks such as oil changes, spark-plug replacement and fuel-system work. It still needs attention to its chain, tires, brakes, suspension and battery. The GASGAS manufacturer describes the MC-E 5 motor as largely maintenance-free; that is not a claim that the whole bike requires no upkeep. There is no verified like-for-like cost-of-ownership study here to quantify savings against a gas bike.

How long can an electric dirt bike run, and how long does it take to charge?

Battery life depends on the model, power setting, terrain and riding style. GASGAS lists a 907 Wh battery for the MC-E 5 and estimates about two hours of beginner riding or 30 minutes in its highest ride mode. These are manufacturer estimates for one youth bike, not independently measured results or general electric-bike range figures.

For the 2025 MC-E 5, GASGAS said an 80% recharge takes about 45 minutes and that the battery can be swapped for a charged spare. The current U.S. model page also lists 45 minutes to 80% and 70 minutes to 100%. Charging time and spare-battery availability are model-specific, so confirm the current specification and charger conditions for the bike you are considering.

GASGAS also claimed the 2025 model’s water cooling delivered 30% longer running time than its predecessor. That is a manufacturer claim about that model update, not an independently verified gain across electric dirt bikes.

When does a gas dirt bike make more sense?

Gas can suit riders who need to resume quickly after a stop, plan long uninterrupted rides, lack a reliable charging point or charged spare, or prefer clutch-and-gear control. Fuel logistics may also be more practical for some routes. These are functional considerations, not proof that gas bikes are universally cheaper, more reliable or easier to service; those qualities depend on the model and location.

As one limited example, a Segway comparison page lists about six hours to charge its Xaber 300 using a specified charger. The page could not be fully verified, so treat that as a caveated model example rather than a general electric-bike charging figure. Gas refueling may be quicker than waiting for a full recharge, but the practical difference depends on the ride plan and available equipment.

How to compare electric and gas bikes for your riding

What to compare Why it matters
Rider and bike class Match age, size, experience and seat height. A youth motocross bike is not a like-for-like comparison with an adult trail bike.
Terrain and ride length Short loops, motocross sessions and long backcountry rides place different demands on usable ride time and refueling or charging logistics.
Usable ride time Check the range or run-time estimate for the specific bike and intended power setting; terrain and riding style affect real use.
Energy access For electric, consider outlet access, charge time and the option of a spare battery. For gas, consider fuel availability along the route.
Control preference Decide whether selectable modes and single-speed operation or a clutch and gears better suit the rider.
Noise and access rules Confirm both noise expectations and whether the riding area permits that bike. Quiet operation alone does not establish legal access.
Ownership costs and support Compare current purchase price, replacement-battery cost, parts, service and resale for the actual models and region. No reliable like-for-like adult-bike price comparison is established here.
Safety and supervision For youth riders, account for properly sized protective equipment and adult supervision, alongside the bike’s controls and fit.

What one youth electric model shows—and what it does not

The U.S. GASGAS MC-E 5 page lists a 40.5 kg weight, 634–682 mm seat height, adjustable seat height, rollover sensor and hydraulic brakes, as well as its six ride modes. The page lists a base MSRP of $5,449 plus $425 freight; that is a model-specific U.S. listing accessed October 7, 2026, and may change. These details can help assess that youth bike, but they do not establish typical electric-bike specifications or prices, nor do they support a general electric-versus-gas cost verdict.

For that same model, GASGAS’s 2024 update release said: “It takes around 45 mins for an 80% recharge, and even better, it’s super easy to swap out the battery for a fully charged one, which means the fun doesn’t stop for long!” This is the manufacturer’s description of its 2025 MC-E 5, not an independent test result.

Which type should you choose?

  • Consider electric if quiet operation, simplified controls or avoiding gasoline-engine tasks are priorities, and the model’s run time and charging plan fit your rides.
  • Consider gas if your rides are long and uninterrupted, charging access is limited, or you specifically want clutch-and-gear control.
  • Before deciding, compare equivalent bikes for rider fit, intended terrain, local rules, service and total purchase requirements rather than relying on a category-wide claim.
