Why Refineries and Assemblers Pause on an Empty Space Engineers Server

Refineries and assemblers advance only when the Space Engineers world simulation is running. In a player-hosted world, the host’s game client provides that simulation, so production effectively stops when the host leaves. A dedicated server runs as a separate process, but it can still pause the simulation when nobody is connected if its PauseGameWhenEmpty setting is enabled. Low simulation speed, an overloaded server, or a block-specific fault can look similar, so the fix depends on which condition you have.

What actually stops when the server is empty?

A refinery or assembler queue is processed by the game simulation, not by a background timer that continues independently. Each production step requires the world to advance. If the simulation is paused, the queue remains in place and no ingots, components or other output are created until simulation resumes.

Player-hosted worlds depend on the host

When you select a normal multiplayer session and invite other players, your game client is hosting the world. The host supplies the running simulation. If that player exits, closes the session or loses the host process, other players no longer have a continuously simulated world to use. An empty player-hosted session therefore cannot keep an unattended production line running.

Dedicated servers are independent processes

A dedicated server is separate from any player’s game client. Keen Software House describes dedicated servers as systems that “don’t depend on any player and they run without render and visual/audio effects.” That separation allows the world to remain available after every player disconnects, provided the server process is still running and its configuration permits simulation while empty.

An empty dedicated server may still be deliberately paused

Dedicated-server settings can include PauseGameWhenEmpty. When this option is enabled, the server pauses the world as soon as no players remain connected. This is not a refinery fault: every production block waits because the simulation itself is stopped. Disabling the option is the relevant change when you want unattended production.

Identify your hosting model first

Do not change refinery settings until you know who is running the world. The same symptom has different causes in a hosted game and on a dedicated server.

Hosting model What happens when everyone leaves? Where to look
Player-hosted session The world depends on the host client. When that host exits, practical simulation availability ends for the other players. The host’s game session and connection; there is no independent server process to keep running.
Dedicated server The server can continue without players, unless an empty-server pause setting, a shutdown task or a process failure stops simulation. Server configuration, control panel/service status, world status and performance metrics.

Useful clues include how the world is started, where settings are edited and whether a server process remains visible after the last player disconnects. A rented or self-hosted dedicated instance normally has a web panel, service manager or console separate from the game client. A session launched directly from a player’s game is usually player-hosted.

Enable unattended production on a dedicated server

The exact menu names around the setting can differ between server managers and game builds, but the configuration key is PauseGameWhenEmpty. Use this sequence:

  1. Make a backup of the world or copy its current configuration. A backup gives you a recovery point if a panel applies unrelated changes when the server restarts.
  2. Open the dedicated-server configuration. Use the server’s control panel or configuration file rather than the multiplayer options in an individual player’s game client.
  3. Find PauseGameWhenEmpty. Confirm whether it is enabled. Some panels present the same key as a checkbox or a true/false value.
  4. Set it to disabled or false. This tells the server not to pause the world solely because the player count reaches zero.
  5. Save the change and restart the server if the manager requires it. A setting that is read only at startup will not affect an already-running process until it reloads its configuration.
  6. Run a controlled test. Place a small amount of valid input in one refinery or assembler, verify that its queue is active, disconnect every player, wait, then reconnect and inspect the output and queue. Record the test duration and server performance so you can distinguish a true pause from slow progress.

If the world still stops at the exact moment the last player leaves, recheck that you edited the active instance rather than a template, backup or a different world slot. Also check whether a hosting panel has an independent idle-shutdown or maintenance rule; that is separate from PauseGameWhenEmpty.

When disabling the empty pause does not fix production

Work through the following sequence in order. It separates a stopped server from a slow simulation and then from a single-block problem.

  1. Confirm that the server process and world are running. A control panel, scheduled maintenance job, crash recovery action or manual stop can terminate the process. If the server is offline, no production setting can advance a queue.
  2. Check whether the world is paused or merely slow. Compare the queue before and after a measured interval while connected. A queue that makes no progress at all suggests a pause or a block condition; a queue that advances irregularly points toward low simulation speed.
  3. Read the server’s simulation speed or UPS. Keen’s official performance guidance treats approximately 60 UPS as the normal operational reference. Values below that indicate that the simulation is running slowly, so production takes longer in real time even though it has not completely stopped.
  4. Inspect CPU load and recent changes. A sudden increase in ships, grids, scripts, physics activity, or production blocks can consume the server’s simulation budget. Compare the timing of the slowdown with the last blueprint, base expansion or mod change.
  5. Check whether all production blocks are affected. If every refinery and assembler stops together, keep investigating server state and performance. If one block is the only failure, use the block checklist below instead of changing global server settings.

How to interpret UPS and simulation speed

UPS (updates per second) describes how quickly the simulation is processing world updates. It is different from a player’s rendered frame rate. A player can see a smooth display while the server simulation is behind, and an empty server can have no visible frame rate at all while still processing updates.

Observation Most likely interpretation Next check
Queues freeze immediately whenever the last player disconnects An empty-server pause is active, or the process is being stopped at that moment. Verify PauseGameWhenEmpty, then inspect scheduled shutdown and service logs.
Queues advance, but much more slowly than expected Low UPS or simulation speed; the world is running under load. Check CPU usage, active grids and the number of simultaneous refineries and assemblers.
Only one refinery or assembler fails A local block condition rather than a global empty-server pause. Check power, inputs, output space, conveyors, ownership and the block’s enabled state.
The server disappears or becomes unreachable Process crash, host shutdown, network failure or a control-panel action. Review service status, restart history and maintenance tasks before troubleshooting production.

The value of 60 UPS is an operational benchmark, not a promise that every world will maintain that rate. The lower the rate, the longer each queue takes in wall-clock time. There is no authoritative universal number of refineries or assemblers that every server can run: hardware, world complexity and concurrent activity determine the result.

Heavy production can reduce server performance

Keen warns that an overloaded dedicated server can cause lag and specifically notes that running many refineries and assemblers simultaneously can hurt performance. A large industrial base can therefore produce a two-stage symptom: production appears to stop because UPS falls severely, and the problem becomes worse as more blocks are turned on.

  • Watch UPS while enabling production in groups instead of activating every refinery and assembler at once.
  • Compare performance with high-load grids or scripts inactive, then reintroduce them to identify the dominant load.
  • Keep a record of the production count and UPS so you can recognize the point at which the world becomes simulation-bound.
  • Do not treat a low UPS reading as proof that the empty-server setting is enabled; low UPS means slow processing, while the setting creates a deliberate pause when the player count reaches zero.

Block-level checks when the server is healthy

If the server remains online, PauseGameWhenEmpty is disabled and UPS is healthy, inspect the affected block itself. These causes are independent of whether players are connected:

  • Power: Confirm that the grid has available power and that the refinery or assembler is receiving it. A block with no usable power cannot process its queue.
  • Input ore or components: Verify that the required input is actually in the block or reachable through the conveyor network. An empty input inventory leaves a queue waiting.
  • Output capacity: Full output inventories can prevent a block from completing the next production step. Free space in the destination inventory and any connected containers.
  • Conveyor routing: Check that conveyor connections are intact and that inventories, sorters or connectors are not blocking the required path.
  • Ownership and access: A block owned by another faction or configured with restrictive access may not be usable by the player or grid that is supplying it.
  • Enabled state: Make sure the block itself has not been switched off. A disabled block can retain its queue without processing it.

Test one block with a known input, free output space and a short queue. If that controlled test works while another block does not, the fault is local to the original production line rather than the server’s empty-world behavior.

Choosing a hosting model for production that runs unattended

The right choice depends on how often the world must run without players and how much administration you want to handle. A dedicated server is not automatically faster; its advantage is that it is independent of a player’s session and exposes server-level controls.

Decision factor Player-hosted session Dedicated server
Simulation while empty Not practical after the host exits, because the host client supplies the session. Possible when the process remains running and PauseGameWhenEmpty is disabled.
Administrative control Primarily tied to the host’s game client and session. Separate configuration, service and control-panel management.
Simulation headroom Limited by the host computer while it is also running the game client. Depends on the dedicated machine and world load; UPS still falls when the server is overloaded.
Persistence and recovery Availability follows the host’s play schedule and connection. Can remain online across player disconnects, but requires monitoring, backups and recovery procedures.
Maintenance burden Low server administration, but the host must be present to provide the session. Higher: updates, configuration, backups, restarts and performance monitoring are your responsibility or your provider’s.
Cost No separate dedicated-server fee, although the host supplies the hardware and connection. Self-hosting uses your hardware and bandwidth; a hosted instance adds a provider charge. No single price applies across platforms or regions.

Keen identifies separate official hosting options for PC and Xbox, so platform and provider availability should be checked before choosing a service. The important production question is whether you can keep the dedicated process running and control its empty-server behavior, not the provider’s marketing label.

A practical recovery checklist

Use this short runbook whenever players report that production stopped while nobody was online:

  1. Write down when the last player disconnected and when the queue was last observed moving.
  2. Identify whether the world is player-hosted or dedicated.
  3. If it is player-hosted, keep the host session running or move the world to a dedicated process for unattended production.
  4. If it is dedicated, inspect PauseGameWhenEmpty and disable it for the active world.
  5. Confirm that the process, world and scheduled tasks show the server as running.
  6. Measure UPS and CPU load during a controlled production test.
  7. If all blocks are affected, reduce server load and investigate the event that lowered simulation speed.
  8. If one block is affected, check power, inputs, output space, conveyors, ownership and enabled state.
  9. Reconnect, verify that the queue advanced during the test interval, and document the working configuration for the next restart.

Bottom line

An empty Space Engineers server does not inherently stop production. A player-hosted world depends on its host, while a dedicated server can continue independently. On a dedicated instance, check PauseGameWhenEmpty first; then distinguish a true pause from low UPS, an overloaded process or a single refinery/assembler blocked by power, inventory, conveyor or ownership conditions.
