Red text blurs in a canvas JPEG export mainly because JPEG stores color at lower resolution than brightness. A thin red stroke is almost all color change, so its edges lose sharpness first. Canvas does not let you request 4:4:4 directly, and no quality number is standardized to produce it. If crisp red text matters, export PNG, or encode the JPEG with a tool that exposes chroma sampling and then check the output.
Why the red edges go soft
JPEG does not store a pixel’s red, green, and blue values directly. It converts each pixel into one brightness component (luminance) and two color-difference components (chrominance). Encoders usually keep luminance at full resolution and store the color components at a lower resolution to save space. People notice small errors in brightness more readily than small errors in color, so that trade is usually invisible in photographs.

Text is the case where it shows. A red letter on a white or gray background has a hard color boundary only a pixel or two wide. When one stored color sample covers both the letter and the background, the color is averaged across that boundary. The brightness edge can stay reasonably sharp, so the result looks less like uniform defocus and more like a colored halo or fringe around the glyphs.

4:2:0, 4:2:2, and 4:4:4 in plain terms
The notation describes how many color samples are kept relative to brightness samples. The table below uses the libjpeg-turbo API documentation’s description of 4:4:4 and 4:2:0, and Apple’s technical description of 4:2:0.

Two points matter for the export. First, 4:4:4 removes the chroma averaging, but it does not make JPEG lossless. Quantization still discards detail, so text can still show ringing at high compression. Second, 4:2:0 is the mode most likely to produce the red fringe, because it halves color resolution in both directions.

Where 4:4:4 kicks in: there is no standard threshold
There is no quality value that the web platform guarantees will produce 4:4:4. The WHATWG HTML Standard defines the optional quality argument for formats that support variable quality, such as image/jpeg, and it sets only a numeric range. It does not define how that number maps to a subsampling mode. The standard states: “Different implementations can have slightly different interpretations of “quality”.” The canvas interface has no argument for choosing 4:4:4, 4:2:2, or 4:2:0.
Historical browser behavior is sometimes quoted as a rule of thumb. A 2013 Chromium bug discussion recorded a report that Firefox and Safari were using 4:4:4 at the maximum quality value of 1.0, and Chromium later made a related change to JPEG subsampling at maximum quality. That is evidence about browser behavior at that time, not a current guarantee. Browser versions, operating systems, and encoder builds can differ, and a browser may change its encoder without notice. Do not treat quality 1.0 as a universal way to get 4:4:4.

The practical consequence is simple: a higher quality value may reduce other JPEG artifacts, but it does not tell you which sampling mode was used. Only the encoder’s settings or inspection of the output can establish that.
How to get crisp red text from canvas
- Decide whether JPEG is required. If the file is for screenshots, diagrams, labels, UI captures, or any image with sharp colored text, export PNG. PNG is the default output for canvas and every browser must support it, so it is the dependable choice.
- If you must use JPEG, request it and check what you received. Browsers may fall back to PNG when a requested type is unsupported. Check the returned MIME type, not the one you asked for.

toBlob()withURL.createObjectURL()overtoDataURL()for large canvases, becausetoDataURL()builds the whole image as a string in memory and can hit URL-length limits. This addresses memory and size, not sharpness. - If JPEG must preserve colored edges, encode outside the canvas. Use an encoder that exposes chroma sampling. The libjpeg-turbo library documents distinct 4:4:4, 4:2:2, and 4:2:0 modes, so you can choose 4:4:4 explicitly and confirm it in the output.
- Inspect the result at 100 percent zoom. Look at the edges of a 1-pixel red stroke on white. A colored fringe that is wider than the glyph edge points to chroma subsampling.

Troubleshooting: the red text still looks wrong
- The fringe is visible only in one browser. Sampling is implementation-dependent, so compare the same export across browsers. Choose PNG or an external encoder if the output must match everywhere.
- The file type is PNG even though you asked for JPEG. The browser fell back to PNG. That output is sharp; check the MIME type in code before assuming JPEG.
- The text is sharp but the file is too large. PNG is the cause. If JPEG is required, use an encoder with 4:4:4 and a moderate quality setting, then compare file size against the visual result.
- The edges still ring after switching to 4:4:4. That is JPEG quantization, not chroma subsampling. Raise the quality setting or export PNG.
Browser-specific behavior should be rechecked against the exact browser and version you target, because the standard leaves the encoder’s choices open and implementations change over time.
