Start with the home network. When PS5 Remote Play on a Steam Deck feels delayed, stutters, flashes, or produces choppy audio, the usual place to investigate is the path between the console, router and Deck—not a generic SteamOS performance setting. For a local setup, wire the PS5 to the router if possible, connect the Deck to 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, pause competing traffic, and retest before changing several settings. If wireless artifacts continue in the third-party Chiaki-ng client, try 720p. These steps can improve a particular network, but neither Sony nor Chiaki-ng establishes one universal cause or a guaranteed fix.

What causes the lag?

Remote Play is an interactive video stream. The PS5 renders the game, encodes frames and sends them through your home network; the Deck decodes the stream and sends controller input back. A connection can show a high download speed in a test and still feel slow if packets are delayed, interrupted or forced to compete with other traffic.

For a Deck and PS5 in the same home, the first suspect should be the local network. Chiaki-ng’s local-setup documentation says performance depends on the router or Ethernet connection. Wi‑Fi interference, a busy wireless channel, a weak signal, or a console connected over a poor wireless link can create delay and visual artifacts even when ordinary web browsing appears normal.

Sony describes Remote Play as working best when the PlayStation is connected to a network with strong latency. In plain terms, latency is the time it takes for data and your input to travel between devices; variation in that time is especially noticeable as uneven motion or controls that arrive late.

First identify whether this is a local or remote connection

Both devices at home

Check that the PS5 and Deck are connected to the same home network. If they are, begin with router placement, Wi‑Fi band, Ethernet and congestion checks. Do not start by changing Internet-facing ports: those settings are mainly relevant when a session cannot establish or a remote connection fails.

Deck away from home

If the Deck is outside your home, the path includes your home Internet upload, the public Internet and the Deck’s current network. The same principles still apply, but you have less control over the route. A fast result on one device does not prove that the end-to-end path is stable.

The network layout that gives you the best starting point

Component Preferred starting point Why it helps
PS5 Ethernet cable to the router Sony calls Ethernet the fastest and most reliable way to connect a PlayStation to a home network and says it can reduce latency compared with Wi‑Fi. Chiaki-ng recommends this wired-console, wireless-Deck layout for portable local play.
Steam Deck 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, where supported and available PlayStation recommends 5 GHz for a wireless client. It generally offers more capacity than a congested 2.4 GHz network, although range and wall penetration can be different.
Other traffic Pause downloads, cloud synchronisation and high-bandwidth streaming while testing PlayStation specifically advises reducing heavy network activity so the Remote Play stream has fewer competitors.
Alternative diagnostic Temporarily connect the Deck by USB-C Ethernet adapter or dock This is optional. It can show whether Wi‑Fi is the variable, but Chiaki-ng’s portable local arrangement does not require a wired Deck.

An ordinary Ethernet cable is sufficient; choose a length that reaches from the router to the PS5 without tension. A cable does not guarantee a smooth stream if the router, Internet service or other link is the bottleneck.

Step-by-step troubleshooting sequence

  1. Confirm the network. On the PS5 and Deck, verify that both devices are using your intended home router. Avoid testing one device on a guest network and the other on the main network, because isolation rules can interfere with local discovery or traffic.
  2. Wire the PS5. Connect an Ethernet cable from the console to a LAN port on the router. Wait for the PS5 to report a wired connection, then run the same Remote Play session again.
  3. Move the Deck to 5 GHz. Select the 5 GHz network name in the Deck’s Wi‑Fi settings if your router exposes separate bands. Stay close enough to the access point for a strong signal; 5 GHz can lose strength faster through walls than 2.4 GHz.
  4. Stop competing traffic. Pause game downloads, operating-system updates, cloud backups and 4K video streams on the network. If another household device is uploading large files, pause that activity for the test.
  5. Retest without changing several variables. Play the same scene for a few minutes and note whether input delay, frame judder, audio breakup or flashes change. Change one setting at a time so you know which adjustment mattered.
  6. Check connection speeds on both ends. Sony’s support guidance lists 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as the minimum required connection speed. PlayStation recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download for best performance. Those figures are requirements and a recommendation, not a promise of a smooth stream; they do not measure every form of latency, packet loss or Wi‑Fi interference.
  7. Adjust Chiaki-ng only after the network check. If the wireless link still produces choppy audio, video flashes or lag, select 720p in Chiaki-ng and retest. The lower resolution can reduce the amount of video data that must cross the wireless link.
  8. Investigate NAT and ports only for connection failures. If Remote Play will not connect, or a remote session fails to establish, continue with the system and network checks below. Do not treat a working local stream that merely feels delayed as evidence that port forwarding is required.

Choosing a stream resolution in Chiaki-ng

When 720p is a sensible diagnostic

Chiaki-ng specifically suggests trying 720p when wireless instability causes choppy audio, flashing video or lag. Lowering the resolution reduces the streaming load and can reveal whether the wireless link is near its practical limit. Compare the result in the same game area and under the same network conditions.

What 720p does not prove

720p is not a universal best setting. It trades image detail for a potentially steadier stream, and a strong local network may handle a higher setting without trouble. Chiaki-ng’s advice applies to its own third-party client; do not present it as a setting that Sony’s official PS Remote Play app universally requires.

Sony’s automatic adjustment is a different context

Sony’s official Remote Play guidance describes automatic PS5 resolution adjustment up to 1080p depending on network quality. That behavior belongs to Sony’s software and documentation. Chiaki-ng exposes its own client settings, so evaluate the two recommendations within their respective applications rather than combining them into one rule.

Speed, latency and what a test can—and cannot—tell you

The numbers are easy to misread. Sony’s 5 Mbps upload/download minimum is the baseline stated in its support article, modified January 21, 2026. PlayStation’s separate guidance recommends 15 Mbps upload/download for best performance; the page’s publication date is not stated. Both are bidirectional figures, so an adequate download result with poor upload can still produce delayed controls or instability.

  • Bandwidth: how much data the connection can carry. Resolution and frame activity consume bandwidth.
  • Latency: how long a packet takes to travel. Higher latency makes input feel delayed.
  • Jitter: variation in that travel time. Jitter can make motion uneven even when average latency looks acceptable.
  • Packet loss: missing data that must be recovered or discarded, often visible as freezes, flashes or audio breaks.
  • Congestion: other traffic filling the router, Wi‑Fi channel or Internet upload.

A speed test is useful for spotting an obviously inadequate connection, but it is not a guarantee. Run it on the PS5 and Deck where possible, then compare behavior after wiring the console and pausing traffic. A result above 15 Mbps does not rule out a weak signal, interference or an overloaded access point.

Diagnosing symptoms instead of guessing

Symptom Most useful first check Next targeted action
Controls feel consistently late Wire the PS5 and check whether the Deck is on 5 GHz Pause uploads/downloads, then retest latency and input response.
Video freezes or flashes Look for Wi‑Fi signal and congestion problems Try Chiaki-ng at 720p and compare with the previous setting.
Audio becomes choppy Reduce competing traffic and verify the Deck’s band Use the same 720p Chiaki-ng test; restore higher quality only if stability returns.
Image is soft but motion is smooth Check whether 720p is enabled in Chiaki-ng Raise quality cautiously after confirming the network remains stable.
Remote Play cannot connect at all Check PS5 rest mode, account and network basics For remote connections, review NAT and UDP 8572 guidance rather than treating this as ordinary stream lag.

When NAT Type 3 and UDP 8572 matter

PlayStation identifies UDP port 8572 as used by Remote Play and warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. These are connection-establishment concerns. If your Deck already reaches the PS5 but the picture is delayed, changing port forwarding is unlikely to be the first rational move.

For a remote session that will not start, check the PS5’s network status and NAT type, confirm that Remote Play is enabled, and verify that the console can remain available for remote use according to Sony’s setup requirements. If the router reports NAT Type 3, ask the router or Internet provider for help before editing advanced forwarding, firewall or carrier-grade NAT settings. Incorrect changes can affect other devices and still fail to address Wi‑Fi interference.

Official PS Remote Play versus Chiaki-ng

Question Sony’s official guidance Chiaki-ng guidance for a Deck
Connection quality Strong latency is important; Ethernet is described as the fastest and most reliable console connection. Local performance depends on the router or Ethernet link; its portable layout wires the PS5 and leaves the Deck on Wi‑Fi.
Wireless client PlayStation recommends 5 GHz for a wireless client and pausing heavy traffic. Use the Deck on 5 GHz where available, then evaluate the client’s behavior.
Resolution behavior Official guidance describes automatic PS5 adjustment up to 1080p according to network quality. Try 720p when wireless problems cause choppy audio, flashes or lag.
Scope Applies to Sony’s Remote Play software and requirements. Third-party documentation; settings and behavior may change with future releases.

Keeping these contexts separate prevents a common troubleshooting error: assuming a setting documented for one client is a universal PS5 or Steam Deck requirement.

Useful A/B tests for a Steam Deck owner

Console wired versus console wireless

Run the same game with the PS5 first on Ethernet, then on Wi‑Fi, while keeping the Deck, resolution and other traffic unchanged. If wiring the console removes the delay or artifacts, the console’s wireless path or signal environment was contributing to the problem.

Deck 5 GHz versus a wired adapter

If you have a USB-C Ethernet adapter or dock, test the Deck briefly over Ethernet. A clear improvement points toward the Deck’s Wi‑Fi path, not necessarily the PS5 or Internet service. The adapter is a diagnostic option, not a requirement for portable play.

Higher resolution versus 720p in Chiaki-ng

Use identical scenes and controller actions. If 720p removes flashes and audio breakup, keep it while diagnosing the network. If both settings behave identically, resolution may not be the limiting factor; return attention to signal quality, congestion and latency.

Router and room checks that are worth doing

  • Place the Deck where it has a clear, shorter path to the access point during testing.
  • Avoid testing beside a microwave, cordless-phone base or other source of radio interference.
  • Do not assume that a single combined network name means the Deck is using 5 GHz; inspect the router or client details if the interface exposes the band.
  • Restart the router only when ordinary troubleshooting calls for it, then wait for all devices to reconnect before judging the result.
  • If every wireless device in the room struggles, investigate the access point or router after confirming the PS5’s Ethernet behavior.

These checks do not replace Sony’s requirements, and no source establishes a particular router model, channel number or distance as a guaranteed solution.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives

Opening ports to fix ordinary local lag

Port forwarding addresses reachability across network boundaries. It does not repair a congested 5 GHz channel or a PS5 that is already connected over a weak wireless signal. Reserve UDP 8572 and NAT investigation for sessions that cannot establish or remote-access failures.

Chasing download speed alone

A large download number can hide upload saturation, jitter or packet loss. Test both directions and observe the stream while traffic is paused.

Changing resolution, bitrate and network hardware simultaneously

That approach may produce a better picture but leaves you unable to identify the cause. Change one variable, repeat the same test, and record the result.

Assuming 720p is always superior

It is a targeted Chiaki-ng fallback for wireless artifacts, not a universal recommendation. Use the highest setting that remains stable on your network rather than lowering quality automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blaming the Deck before isolating the link

Comparing the console-wired/Deck-wireless layout with a short wired test helps separate client Wi‑Fi problems from console or router problems. It is more informative than reinstalling software without changing the network path.

A compact decision tree

  1. Does the session fail to connect? Check Remote Play enablement, account and rest-mode basics. For remote access, investigate NAT Type 3 and UDP 8572 with router or ISP assistance.
  2. Does it connect but lag locally? Confirm both devices are on the same home network, wire the PS5, move the Deck to 5 GHz and pause heavy traffic.
  3. Are there flashes, choppy audio or freezes? Retest after congestion is removed, then try 720p in Chiaki-ng.
  4. Is only Wi‑Fi bad? Compare 5 GHz with a temporary Deck Ethernet connection. A difference directs attention to wireless conditions.
  5. Is the stream still poor after those checks? Record the topology, bands, speed-test results, symptoms and settings before asking your router or ISP for help. That information is more useful than simply reporting that Remote Play is “slow.”

What a successful fix should look like

Success is not a particular speed-test number or resolution. It is a repeatable session in which controller input arrives promptly enough for the game, motion remains consistent, and audio does not break up under the same household traffic. Keep the network arrangement and Chiaki-ng setting that deliver that behavior, and change only one element if the problem returns.
