A padlock beside a PS5 game means the console cannot currently confirm that your account has permission to start it. It can reflect a license or network problem, but the icon alone does not prove that you never bought the game.
To identify the cause, check the account that made the purchase, verify whether the game was supplied through PlayStation Plus, and determine whether another account is sharing its purchase on your PS5. Once the entitlement is confirmed, work through PlayStation’s service, software, sharing and license-repair steps in that order.

What the padlock on a PS5 game actually means
Digital games do not rely only on the copy of the game data stored on the console. The PS5 also checks an entitlement, or license, associated with a PlayStation account. If that check cannot be completed, the game tile may display a padlock and launch may be blocked.
PlayStation identifies a padlock as a possible license issue and also lists network problems among the causes of game-access errors. A temporary sign-in failure, an unavailable PlayStation service, a changed console-sharing setting, or a missing subscription entitlement can therefore look similar to a missing purchase. The symbol is a warning about access, not a receipt.

There are three fundamentally different ways a game may have appeared in your library:
- Purchased ownership: the signed-in account completed a PlayStation Store purchase and retains that entitlement.
- Subscription access: the game was claimed or downloaded through PlayStation Plus and remains available only while the applicable membership and catalogue rights are valid.
- Shared access: another account purchased or downloaded the game and enabled Console Sharing and Offline Play on this PS5.
A library entry by itself cannot tell you which of those explanations applies. The checks below separate them.
How to tell whether your account bought the game
1. Sign in to the purchasing account
On the PS5, switch to the PlayStation account that you believe made the purchase. If several people use the console, do not assume that the account currently selected on the home screen is the buyer. A game can remain installed after the buyer has signed out, while a different account sees the tile with a lock.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOpen that account’s transaction history and look for the game. A completed transaction is the clearest evidence of purchased ownership. Check the title, edition and completion status rather than relying on the game image in the library. A failed, cancelled or pending transaction does not establish a usable license.
If the transaction is absent, consider the other two explanations before concluding that the game was never purchased. It may have been supplied by PlayStation Plus or by another user through console sharing.

2. Check PlayStation Plus separately
If you obtained the game through PlayStation Plus, confirm that the membership on the entitled account is active. For catalogue games, also check that the title is still listed in the current catalogue. A game can remain installed on the SSD after it leaves the catalogue; the installed files do not extend the catalogue entitlement.
PlayStation Plus benefits belong to the member’s account. On one PS5, selected benefits can be shared with other users when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled, but the membership itself still has to be valid on the entitled account. A padlock on a Plus game therefore requires both an account check and a current-access check.
3. Check whether another user owns it
Ask the person who purchased the game to sign in and verify Console Sharing and Offline Play on this PS5. When enabled, anyone using that console can play the owner’s purchased and downloaded games, including while offline. The setting can be enabled on only one PS5 at a time.
If the owner enabled sharing on a different PS5, or disabled it, other local users can lose access even though the game remains installed. The owner must change the setting on the console intended for sharing; simply downloading the game again under a different account does not transfer ownership.
Ownership, validity and remedy at a glance
| Possible source of access | Who holds the entitlement | What must currently be true | First remedy |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Store purchase | The account shown in the transaction history | The purchase completed and the console can verify the license | Sign in to that account, then troubleshoot the license or network check |
| PlayStation Plus catalogue or claimed game | The PlayStation Plus member’s account | The membership is active and, for catalogue titles, the game is still available | Verify membership and catalogue status on the entitled account |
| Console sharing | Another user on the same PS5 | The owner has Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on this PS5; the feature is not active on another PS5 | Have the purchasing account verify or restore the sharing setting |
This distinction prevents a common mistake: treating every padlock as an expired subscription or every missing transaction as proof that the game was never paid for.

Fix a padlocked game after confirming the entitlement
Use the following escalation order. It starts with problems that affect many games and ends with repairs that take longer or are more disruptive. No single step is guaranteed to fix every padlock.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check PlayStation service status. If account, Store or licensing services are having an outage, the console may be unable to validate an otherwise legitimate entitlement. Wait for the service to recover before changing account settings.
- Restart the PS5. A normal restart forces a fresh connection and clears a temporary launch error. After the console returns to the home screen, try the game again while signed in to the entitled account.
- Install current system software. Open the PS5 system-software update controls and install any available update. Licensing and launch behavior can depend on the console running current software.
- Recheck Console Sharing and Offline Play. If access comes from another account, have that account open the sharing setting and confirm that this is the one PS5 where the feature is enabled. If access belongs to your own purchase, make sure you are not testing from a different user profile by mistake.
- Restore licenses. This refreshes the console’s record of the entitlements associated with the account. PlayStation states that restoring licenses does not affect your data.
- Use Safe Mode to rebuild the database. If entitlement checks pass but the tile remains locked after the earlier steps, use the PS5 Safe Mode option to rebuild the database. This is a later troubleshooting step for persistent launch or content-index problems, not a substitute for proving who owns the game.
- Delete and re-download when appropriate. PlayStation’s game-launch guidance includes deleting and downloading the game again for some launch failures. Do this only after confirming the correct account and entitlement, because a fresh download cannot create ownership that the account does not have.
How to restore licenses on PS5
License restoration is the specific repair to try when the account should have access but the console is not recognizing it. PlayStation Support describes the situation as: “A game has a padlock icon (not related to the expiration of your PlayStation Plus subscription).” That wording explains why restoration can help, while the separate Plus checks above still matter when the game came from a subscription.
From Settings
- Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Select Restore Licenses.
- Choose the licenses option and allow the process to finish.
From the game tile
- Highlight the locked game on the home screen or in your game library.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Choose Restore License.
If the menu item is unavailable or the lock returns immediately, go back to the account check. Restoration can refresh a valid entitlement; it cannot turn a Plus catalogue game that has left the catalogue into a purchased game, and it cannot replace a sharing setting that the owner has removed.
Why a PS Plus game may be locked
For a game obtained through PlayStation Plus, test the conditions in this order:
- Correct member account: sign in to the account that claimed or accessed the game through Plus.
- Active membership: verify that the applicable PlayStation Plus subscription is still active.
- Catalogue availability: if the game came from the catalogue rather than a separate claim, confirm that it has not left the catalogue.
- Sharing: if another local user is playing through the member’s benefits, confirm Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on this PS5.
- Technical validation: after those checks, use the service-status, restart, software-update and license-restoration sequence.
Do not infer a purchase from the fact that the game is visible in the library or remains installed. Subscription access and purchased ownership are recorded differently, and the remedy depends on which one you actually had.

When another account bought the game
Console sharing is the normal explanation when one family member bought a digital game and other profiles on the same PS5 could play it. The purchasing account must enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on this console. Once enabled, other users on that PS5 can play the owner’s purchased and downloaded games, even without an internet connection.
The feature is limited to one PS5 at a time. If the owner activates it on a new console, the previous console may lose shared access. A lock that appears for every non-owner profile after such a change is consistent with the sharing entitlement moving, not with the game files becoming corrupted.
Have the owner test the title from their own account. If the owner also sees a lock, investigate the purchase or Plus status first. If the owner can play but another profile cannot, focus on Console Sharing and Offline Play rather than attempting to buy the game again.
Parental controls can create a different kind of lock
If the padlock covers the entire game image rather than appearing only when the title is launched, PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance says the Family Manager can amend the restriction. Check parental-control settings as a separate branch from license ownership. A family restriction can block a game that the account legitimately owns, so restoring licenses alone may not change the icon.

Disc games: use the physical-media path
A disc edition has a different first check from a digital license. Insert the correct game disc and keep it in the drive while launching; the disc is the proof that the console may start that installation. Account-license troubleshooting does not replace a missing, unreadable or incorrect disc.
For disc launch problems, use PlayStation’s disc-specific game-launch guidance. Some launch cases involve moving game data from USB extended storage back to the PS5’s internal console storage. Treat that as a storage or disc diagnosis, not as evidence that buying a disc or accessory will resolve a digital ownership lock.
If the same title exists in both digital and disc editions, identify which edition is installed before troubleshooting. A disc-based installation and a digital entitlement can coexist, but the console still needs the matching access method at launch.

What each outcome tells you
| What you observe | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The buyer’s transaction history shows a completed purchase, but the buyer sees a lock | The entitlement should exist; validation, service or software state is suspect | Check service status, restart, update system software and restore licenses |
| The game appears only under a Plus member’s account | Access is subscription-based rather than proven ownership | Verify membership and catalogue availability |
| The buyer can play, but other profiles see a lock | Shared access is not enabled on this PS5 or has moved to another PS5 | Verify Console Sharing and Offline Play with the buyer |
| No account has a completed purchase and Plus access is invalid | The console has no confirmed entitlement for the title | Do not expect license restoration to create access; identify the account or subscription that originally supplied it |
| The lock covers the game image and affects a child profile | A family restriction may be involved | Ask the Family Manager to review parental controls |
| A disc title will not start while the disc is present | The issue may be physical-media, installation or storage related | Follow disc troubleshooting and check whether data must move from USB extended storage to console storage |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the library proves ownership: library visibility can come from a subscription or sharing.
- Restoring licenses under the wrong profile: the repair applies to the account whose entitlement you are checking.
- Confusing Plus expiry with every padlock: PlayStation also documents padlocks unrelated to Plus expiration, so verify the purchase and network path as well.
- Changing sharing without the owner’s account: only the purchasing account can establish its console-sharing choice.
- Deleting before checking entitlement: re-downloading fixes damaged or incomplete game data in some cases, but it cannot grant a missing license.
- Ignoring service outages: a healthy purchase can still appear unavailable while PlayStation account or licensing services cannot be reached.
The shortest reliable diagnosis
Start with the account, not the icon. Find the completed transaction, active Plus entitlement or sharing owner. Then verify that the entitlement is currently valid, check service status and software, confirm console sharing where relevant, and restore licenses. If the lock survives those checks, use Safe Mode database rebuilding or the disc-specific path that matches the game. This sequence tells you whether the problem is ownership, subscription validity, sharing, parental control, network validation or local game data instead of treating every padlock as the same error.
