Sony confirms that update data is managed differently on PS5 than on PS4 and that supported games can expose optional content controls. However, Sony does not publish a universal rule saying why every title grows, nor does it say that the download size is added directly to the installed size.
The reliable way to diagnose a change is to compare the console’s available storage, the game’s stated free-space requirement, and the add-ons installed for that particular title. If the increase is unexpectedly large or installation fails, use the publisher’s support for that game and Sony’s current troubleshooting guidance rather than relying on a general internet explanation.

What changes when a PS5 game is updated or expanded
An update can change the data that makes up an installed game. A content pack can add a mode, map, language package, campaign chapter, texture set or other material selected by the player. On disc, Sony says some games ask which add-ons to install; on supported titles, the console can also expose controls for removing particular modes or other content. Those controls are decided by the game developer, so two games can behave differently even when their updates have similar download sizes.

Sony’s PS5: The Ultimate FAQ, published on November 9, 2020, says that downloading and applying updates should generally be quicker than on PS4 because update and patch data is managed more effectively. That is a statement about update handling and transfer efficiency. It is not a promise that every patch will reduce the installed footprint, leave it unchanged or add a predictable amount of storage.

There is no official, platform-wide formula that converts a patch download into the final increase shown in PS5 storage. A particular publisher may document how its title packages content, but Sony’s general support pages do not identify one technical cause for every game. Treat the number shown for an individual title as a title-specific result, not as evidence of a universal PS5 rule.
Download size and installed-size growth are different measurements
The number displayed while an update downloads describes the data transferred from the network. The number shown in console storage describes the data currently allocated to the installed game and its components. They answer different questions, so they should not be expected to match.

For that reason, do not add the patch’s download number to the old game size and assume the result is correct. The final storage figure can reflect the content that was actually installed and the way the title organizes its data. Sony has not published a general conversion rule, and common online claims about a fixed duplicate-file or temporary-copy requirement are not established by the cited official guidance.

Why a content pack can make the installation larger
New playable or optional material
The most straightforward explanation is that the pack contains data the base installation did not have. A new campaign section, map, mode, character set, audio language or high-resolution asset set needs storage if you choose to install it. The exact size is controlled by the game, and Sony does not publish one standard allowance for these categories.
Selective installation on supported games
Some games separate their content so you can install only the portions you use. Sony’s disc-install instructions describe selecting add-ons during installation, and its storage guidance gives unused add-ons and completed portions as examples of data that may be removable. If you install an additional component later, the game’s footprint can rise even though the original base game has not changed.
Title-specific update behavior
An update can alter existing installed data as well as add new data. The public Sony material does not say which files a particular title replaces, retains or reorganizes, so those mechanisms should not be presented as universal facts. For a definitive explanation of a dramatic increase, check the game publisher’s patch notes or support page for that title.

Check the numbers on your own PS5
Use these steps before deleting anything. They separate the console’s available capacity from the requirement for a specific download or add-on.

- Open Settings > Storage and note the available PS5 console storage. This is the capacity the system can use now, not the size of one game.
- For a game you plan to download, open Game Library, highlight the game, choose the … menu and select View Product. Sony directs users to this listing to check the game’s minimum free-space requirement.
- For an add-on that is marked Waiting to install, check Settings > Storage and the add-on’s Store listing. Sony’s add-on troubleshooting guidance says to verify the minimum storage requirement shown there.
- After installation, return to storage and compare the available-space figure. Record the date and the content you installed; this avoids confusing a later patch or another game with the change you are investigating.
A minimum free-space requirement is a starting condition for the transaction. It is not a promise that the completed game will consume exactly that amount, and it is not a universal estimate for future updates.
See and remove content when the game supports it
Storage controls vary by title. The absence of a removable-content option does not mean the installation is broken; it may simply mean the developer packaged the game as one unit.

- Highlight the game on the PS5 home screen or in Game Library and open the options menu.
- Choose Manage Game Content when that option is offered. Select only the add-ons you actually need when installing content.
- Inside a supported game, look for its Customize controls. Sony says these controls can allow specific modes or other content to be removed.
- Read the confirmation screen carefully. Removing an add-on is different from deleting saved data, and the available choices depend on the title.
Removing optional content can free space while leaving the rest of the game installed. It does not prevent a future update from changing the game’s size, and it cannot remove data that the developer has made inseparable from the base installation.

USB extended storage
USB extended storage is useful for keeping a larger library without downloading every title again. Sony’s storage guidance states that PS5 games can be stored there, but they must be moved back to the console’s internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before play. Therefore, USB storage is a capacity-management tool, not a way to play PS5 games directly from the drive.

An M.2 SSD can provide playable storage for PS5 games and applications. It expands capacity; it does not stop a game from growing when its developer adds or enables content. Confirm the current requirements for your exact PS5 model before buying or installing a drive.

M.2 requirements documented for the PS5 CFI-2016 guide
Sony’s CFI-2016 PS5 safety guide specifies the following requirements for an expansion drive. These details are model-specific and should not be generalized to every PS5 revision without checking its current guide.

The same guide says Sony cannot guarantee every drive that appears to meet the listed specifications. A suitable heat-dissipation structure is required, so check the complete current safety and installation guidance for the console model rather than relying on a drive’s marketing label alone.
When a size increase looks abnormal
There is no official published figure for a typical amount of growth after a PS5 update or content install. A large increase is therefore not automatically proof of corruption, but it deserves a title-specific check when it is accompanied by an error, an installation loop or missing content.
- Confirm that the change followed the intended update or add-on, not another game downloading in the background.
- Check the Store listing and View Product page for the current minimum free-space requirement.
- Open Manage Game Content and the game’s Customize controls, if present, to identify newly installed optional material.
- Verify the account and disc region when an add-on will not install. Sony’s add-on troubleshooting guidance includes storage, network and region checks.
- Use Sony’s current game-download and storage troubleshooting instructions if the installation fails.
- Look up the publisher’s support page or patch notes for the exact title if the reported size is far outside what its documented content would suggest.
Do not delete saved data as a routine response. Sony’s storage guidance treats saved data separately from game and app data; removing saves can destroy progress without addressing the installed game’s size.
A practical storage routine for future updates
- Keep a buffer of free space instead of waiting until the console is nearly full. The exact buffer depends on the game and the Store requirement shown for the next installation.
- Before installing an optional pack, read its listing and decide whether you need every component.
- After a major update, check Settings > Storage and record the new figure if space is important to you.
- Remove finished or unused content only through the game’s supported management controls.
- Move less frequently played PS5 titles to USB extended storage if you can tolerate moving them back before play.
- For a frequently used library, install a compatible M.2 SSD that meets the requirements for your exact console model.
The central distinction is simple: an update or content install can change what is installed, but the download number is not a guaranteed prediction of the storage increase. Sony documents the checks and controls available on PS5; the reason for a particular game’s final size remains specific to that game unless its publisher explains the packaging.
