Short answer: PlayStation backward compatibility is generation-specific. A PS5 plays the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, but Sony explicitly says that PS5 consoles do not support original PlayStation 3 discs. Original PS2 discs are also not a general PS5 feature. A PS3 can run many PS2 games only on certain hardware revisions, and Sony warned that complete compatibility was not guaranteed.
If an older game will not start, identify the game’s generation, the exact console model, and whether you are using an original disc, a digital release, a remaster or remake, or a streamed version. Those are different products and access methods.

Backward compatibility is not a single PlayStation feature
“Backward compatible” means that a newer console can run software made for an older console. That can be achieved with older hardware inside the machine, software emulation, a rebuilt digital version, or cloud streaming. These methods are not interchangeable.
Compatibility is decided separately for each console generation and sometimes for each game. The fact that PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of the more than 4,000 PS4 games does not mean it supports PS3 or PS2 software. Sony’s current PS5 documentation specifically limits that broad support statement to PS4 games and states that PS3 discs are unsupported.

A disc also does not contain a universal “PlayStation game” format. A PS2 disc and a PS3 disc use different software, security and system requirements. A console may physically accept a disc while lacking the hardware or software needed to execute it.
Which combinations work?
The table below separates original-disc playback from other ways of accessing a game. “Supported” means the platform is intended to run that format; it does not mean every individual title is guaranteed.
| Game or software format | Console | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS3 disc | PS5 | Not supported. Sony’s PS5 support statement says PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs. |
| Original PS2 disc | PS5 | Not a general supported feature. Use a listed remaster, remake or eligible streaming version instead. |
| Original PS4 disc | PS5 with a disc drive | The overwhelming majority of PS4 games are supported, subject to title-specific exceptions and updates. |
| Original PS4 disc | PS5 Digital Edition | Cannot be used because the console has no disc drive. A digital copy is required. |
| Original PS3 disc | PS3 | Designed for PS3 software, although regional, disc-condition and system issues can still prevent a particular disc from working. |
| Original PS2 disc | PS3 | Model-dependent. Some historical PS3 systems had limited PS2 compatibility; full compatibility was not guaranteed. |
| Original PS2 or PS3 game in an official remaster or remake | PS4 or PS5 | Works as the newer release when that specific version is offered. It is not native playback of the old disc. |
| Eligible classic streamed through PlayStation Plus | PS4 or PS5 | Possible in supported markets with the required membership plan and a title present in the current catalog. |
Why a PS5 cannot simply read a PS3 disc
The console generation uses different system technology
PS3 software was designed around the PS3’s operating environment and distinctive processor architecture. Making it run on PS5 would require a reliable compatibility layer, game-specific fixes, or a rebuilt release. A disc drive can read physical data; it cannot by itself translate the entire older system into instructions the new console understands.

- 320GB HDD for storing games, music, videos, and photos
- Streams thousands of movies and TV shows instantly from Netflix
- Built-in Blu-ray player with 3D capabilities. HDMI output for 1080p resolution.
PS5’s officially supported physical backward compatibility is centered on PS4 discs. Sony’s current support page makes the boundary explicit: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” Inserting a PS3 disc, changing a system setting or updating the console cannot turn that unsupported format into a playable one.
Licensing and game-specific behavior also matter
Even when emulation is technically possible, publishers may need to clear music, character, online-service or distribution rights again. Older games can also depend on timing, peripherals or network services that no longer exist. That is why a newer-console release is usually evaluated title by title rather than promised for an entire generation.
Why some PS3 consoles play PS2 games—and others do not
PS3 history is more complicated than a simple “yes” or “no.” Early or specific PS3 revisions included more of the PS2’s hardware or a compatibility solution. Later revisions removed those components or changed the implementation, reducing or eliminating PS2-disc support.

Sony’s PS3 system documentation describes the covered system as having limited backward compatibility with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 format software and warns: “Many PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 format software titles operate, but full compatibility is not guaranteed.” That statement applies to the documented system and should not be generalized to every PS3 revision.

For a PS2 disc, verify the PS3 model number and the exact game. A console that runs one PS2 title may fail with another because compatibility lists identify individual games, not just the hardware family. A system update, disc region, save-data behavior or a known graphical problem can also affect the result.
Your practical options for playing an older game on PS4 or PS5
1. Use the original disc on an appropriate older console
If preserving the original PS3 disc is the priority, a PS3 is the relevant physical platform. Confirm the console’s model, region and disc-drive condition before buying or borrowing one. For PS2 discs, choose only a PS3 revision and game combination documented as compatible; no PS3 model should be assumed to run every PS2 title.

2. Buy an official remaster or remake
Some PS2 and PS3 games have been rebuilt or remastered for PS4 or PS5. The newer release may improve resolution, loading, controls or trophies, but it is a separate product. Owning the original disc does not automatically grant the newer digital license unless the publisher’s specific upgrade policy says so.
3. Stream an eligible classic
Sony’s PlayStation Plus service can offer selected original PS2 and PS3 games for streaming through the Classics Catalog in supported markets. The game must be listed in the catalog available to your account, and the required membership tier must be active. Catalog contents, regions and plan rules can change, so check the current listing rather than relying on an old list.

Some classic games are downloadable, while others are streaming-only. Sony’s service guidance distinguishes downloadable remastered or remade PS2/PS3 games from original PS2/PS3 games offered through streaming in select markets. A download is still a modern release or catalog license; it does not make the original disc format compatible.

Streaming requirements and limitations
Sony’s current United States support information lists a broadband connection of at least 5 Mbps for Classics Catalog streaming. Streaming at 1080p requires at least 15 Mbps and a game that supports that resolution. Those are minimum connection figures, not guarantees of perfect latency or image quality.
- Check the market: streaming availability and the catalog differ by country or region.
- Check the plan: the correct PlayStation Plus membership is required for the eligible catalog.
- Check the title: a game may be absent, removed, streaming-only or offered only as a remaster.
- Check the connection: congestion, Wi-Fi interference and household traffic can cause delay even when a speed test exceeds the minimum.
- Expect service dependence: streaming requires an active internet connection and the service to remain available.
How to diagnose a game that will not run
- Read the game generation. Check the case, disc label or store listing for “PS2,” “PS3,” “PS4” or a newer edition. Do not identify it only by the game’s name, because one title may have releases on several generations.
- Identify the console model. Record whether it is a PS5 disc edition, PS5 Digital Edition, a particular PS3 revision or another model. The presence of a disc drive is relevant only after the generation is supported.
- Classify the access method. Decide whether you are inserting an original disc, launching a digital purchase, using a remaster or remake, or streaming from PlayStation Plus.
- Apply the generation rule. A PS5 will not run an original PS3 disc. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read any physical disc. A PS3’s ability to run a PS2 disc depends on the exact model and game.
- Look up the current title listing. Search the PlayStation Store or Classics Catalog in your account’s region. Confirm the edition, membership requirement and whether the option is download or streaming.
- Rule out ordinary disc faults. On a supported format, inspect the disc for scratches, clean it with a soft lint-free cloth, restart the console, install system updates and test another known-good disc. These steps cannot fix an unsupported generation.
- Check region and peripherals. Some older releases, downloadable rights and accessories are region-specific. A game that depends on a discontinued peripheral or online service may not reproduce its original experience.
Common mistaken assumptions
“The PS5 plays PS4 games, so it should play PS3 games.”
PS4-to-PS5 support is a separate compatibility program. Sony’s “4,000+ games” figure describes the PS4 catalog, not PS2 or PS3 software.
“The disc fits, so the console should run it.”
Physical fit only shows that the drive can accept the media. It says nothing about the console’s ability to execute that generation’s software.

A catalog entry grants access to a listed digital or streamed version under the service’s rules. It does not convert an original disc into a license for the newer console.
“Every PS3 is a PS2 player.”
Compatibility varied by PS3 revision and title. Sony’s own guide described it as limited and not fully guaranteed.
Choosing the right route
| Your priority | Most appropriate route | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Use the exact PS3 disc you already own | Compatible PS3 hardware | PS5 is not an option for the original disc; verify the PS3 model and disc condition. |
| Play on a PS5 with modern features | Official PS5 remaster or remake | Availability and upgrade rights are title-specific. |
| Avoid buying another console | Eligible PlayStation Plus streaming | Requires the right plan, supported region, catalog listing and adequate connection. |
| Play without streaming delay | Downloadable modern version | Only possible when that edition is offered; it is not the original disc. |
| Use a PS2 disc on PS3 | Model- and title-confirmed PS3 | No PS3 revision is guaranteed to run every PS2 game. |
The decisive information for a specific case is the exact game title, disc or digital format, console model number, region and willingness to use a remaster or streaming. Without those details, a universal yes-or-no answer is unreliable.
