Recent completed-sale records show examples above Sony’s original prices, but they do not establish a full historical price trend or prove how much scarcity, collecting, or any other factor contributes.
How today’s prices compare with the launch prices
Sony announced the PS Vita TV in Japan for release on November 14, 2013. Its recommended retail price was ¥9,954 including tax for the standalone system, or ¥14,994 for a value pack that included a DUALSHOCK 3 controller and an 8 GB memory card. Sony described it as a compact system connected to a television by HDMI and said a DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller was required. Sony’s 2013 announcement

For North America, Europe, and the PAL region, Sony announced the PlayStation TV name, a standalone recommended price of $99 in North America and €99 in Europe, and a planned fall 2014 release. Sony’s 2014 announcement
PriceCharting’s US page, accessed October 7, 2026, listed estimated values of $135.35 for loose, $179.99 for complete, and $272.10 for new examples. Those estimates and individual transactions are useful reference points, not guaranteed selling prices or a universal rate across marketplaces.

The launch prices and current estimates differ in currency, date, market, and condition, so they are not a like-for-like inflation calculation. PriceCharting also excludes unsold listings from its estimates; an asking price is not proof that a buyer paid that amount. PriceCharting’s PlayStation TV page
What the recent completed sales show
PriceCharting’s US page recorded a loose console with a 16 GB memory card selling for $125 on September 30, 2026. It listed boxed examples at $179.99 and $199.99 on October 1, 2026, and a boxed tested example at $180 on August 11, 2026. These are selected completed-sale records, not a complete census of the market.
That spread illustrates why condition and contents matter. A loose system, a boxed system, and a tested system bundled with accessories are different purchases. The records do not establish a percentage increase over time, and they should not be treated as prices on every marketplace or in every country.

Buyers are looking in a secondary market
PS Vita TV is an older console, and these recent sales concern used and collectible examples rather than a current standard retail launch. With no ordinary new retail supply in the evidence here, buyers compete for individual second-hand units. The available figures do not quantify how many remain available, so they cannot show precisely how much scarcity affects price.

Sony’s sales expectations were not met
Sony’s FY2015 filing says it recorded an ¥11.2 billion component write-down for PS Vita and PS TV because the latest PS TV unit-sales forecast did not reach the original forecast. This was a combined component write-down, not a PS TV sales total; it supports the conclusion that the product fell short of Sony’s expectations, not a claim about how many units were sold. A niche product can attract specific buyers
The system’s compact Vita-to-TV format may appeal to someone seeking that particular console experience, as well as to collectors. That is a plausible source of demand, but the cited sources do not measure collector demand or separate it from other buyer interest. It is therefore not possible to assign the price premium to collecting alone.

Bundles and condition are not interchangeable
Sony’s Japanese value pack included a DUALSHOCK 3 controller and an 8 GB memory card, while recent tracked sales include loose and boxed examples with varying contents. A higher price can reflect a more complete or better-preserved package rather than the console alone. Compare like with like before deciding whether a listing is unusually expensive.

- Working condition: Look for clear confirmation that the unit was tested and works, rather than relying on a box or “untested” description.
- Included accessories: Check whether a DUALSHOCK 3 controller, memory card, and required cables are actually included. Sony specified that a DUALSHOCK 3 controller is required.
- Condition and packaging: Separate loose, complete, and boxed comparisons; packaging and completeness can materially change what a sale represents.
- Region and model: Confirm the specific unit and its region before comparing it with another listing.
- Comparable sale records: Use completed sales with similar condition and contents, not unsold asking prices. Keep the country and currency in view.
These checks help explain differences between listings; they do not guarantee that a particular asking price is fair or that the item will retain its value.
