Its value is its measured radiological history—not simply its age or its origin in a wreck. The steel is one part of a larger strategy that also uses underground laboratories, screened materials, shielding, and methods for rejecting unwanted events.
Why radiation background matters
Experiments searching for rare events must distinguish a faint signal from radiation that can deposit energy in a similar range. Backgrounds can come from cosmic rays and secondary particles, radon and its decay products, naturally occurring uranium, thorium, and potassium-40 in nearby materials, or contamination and activation in detector and shielding components.

SNOLAB describes the challenge as trying to hear a pin drop at a rock concert. The scale can be extreme: the facility says its experiments may seek an interaction rate of one per tonne of detector material per year. That figure describes the experiments’ target sensitivity, not a measured rate for every detector. SNOLAB’s low-background environment overview explains why reducing unwanted events is essential.

Steel produced before atmospheric nuclear testing has a different radiological history from material that could have been exposed to fallout-related radionuclides or activation products. For this reason, pre-World War II steel has been called “low background steel” in some measurement contexts. It can serve as shielding around a detector, reducing radiation that would otherwise reach the measurement area.

Age alone does not establish that a piece of steel is suitable. Its activity, composition, handling history, location in the detector assembly, and ability to meet structural and operational requirements all matter. Modern steel is not automatically unsuitable: researchers can commission material with low-background requirements and assess it for the isotopes relevant to their experiment.
The USS Indiana steel used at PNNL
A documented example comes from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s In Vivo Radiobioassay and Research Facility in Richland, Washington. The facility incorporated hull steel from the USS Indiana into a shielded room for in-vivo measurements. In a 2007 paper, Timothy P. Lynch reported that 30 centimetres of steel significantly reduced measured background from high-energy photons in the 600–1500 keV range. Lynch’s paper, “A historically significant shield for in vivo measurements,” describes that specific shield and measurement context.

- Easy to Use: ERICKHILL Radiation Detector ready to measure instantly upon powering on—no complicated setup required. All three field strengths display directly on the screen, letting you see electric, magnetic, and RF readings at a glance. Ideal for users of all experience levels.
- Clear Color-Coded Screen: The large display features a three-color backlight indicator (green, orange, and red) that changes based on radiation levels, giving you instant visual feedback on EMF exposure to easily assess low, moderate, and high radiation zones.
- Triple Alarm Modes: Equipped with sound, screen, and light alerts that help you identify areas with higher radiation levels, this EMF meter ensures you’re always aware of your environment. You can easily turn off the sound alerts if preferred, while the visual and light indicators will still highlight areas with higher radiation, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.
- Convenient and Energy-Saving Design: Our emf detector equipped with unit switching for customized readings, a Type-C charging port for fast, easy charging, and an automatic shutoff feature to save battery, this EMF detector is portable, energy-efficient, and made for frequent use.
This case shows how historically low-background steel can be useful; it does not establish that all modern steel is poor shielding or that rare-event detectors generally require salvaged ship material. The best material depends on what radiation the experiment needs to control and on measurements of the material itself.
How rare-event experiments control background
Shielding is only one layer. Large rare-event experiments combine measures that reduce different sources of background with techniques that identify or reject events that still reach the detector. A 2024 review by Susana Cebrián describes this layered approach for large time-projection chambers. The review discusses underground operation, material radiopurity controls, passive shielding, active event tagging, discrimination techniques, and Monte Carlo modeling.

Underground operation
Rock above an underground laboratory reduces cosmic rays reaching an experiment. SNOLAB reports 2,070 metres of rock overburden and a cosmic-ray flux reduced by a factor of 50 million relative to the surface. These are SNOLAB facility figures; they do not mean all backgrounds disappear underground. SNOLAB’s facility description provides the context for those numbers.
Radiopure materials and passive shielding
Researchers screen detector parts and shielding for trace radioactivity, with attention to the isotopes and radiation relevant to the experiment. Shielding materials are selected for performance against the backgrounds of concern and for their placement relative to the active detector. Screening and certification can take time and resources, and a material’s suitability cannot be inferred from a label such as “old,” “stainless,” or “titanium.”

Active tagging and event discrimination
Some systems record surrounding activity or use the characteristics of an event to distinguish likely backgrounds from candidate signals. These methods complement material selection and passive shielding: they address events that cannot be prevented from reaching the detector.

Pre-nuclear steel is one option, not a universal recipe. Published projects illustrate how materials are chosen for specific components and requirements.
| Experiment or example | Material and use | What the example establishes |
|---|---|---|
| PNNL In Vivo Radiobioassay and Research Facility | USS Indiana hull steel in a shielded room | Lynch’s 2007 paper reports significant reduction of measured 600–1500 keV photon background with 30 cm of steel. |
| PandaX-II | Custom low-background stainless steel for the pressure vessel | The project’s paper concerns low-background steel made for a detector component, rather than salvaged ship steel. PandaX-II’s pressure-vessel paper provides the project details. |
| LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) | Selected titanium alloy for the cryostat and other detector components | The collaboration documented radioassay and material selection for its detector. The LZ publication record provides the project context. |
The examples are not a ranking of materials. A useful comparison considers measured radiopurity, the component’s proximity to the active detector, the radiation type and energy to be controlled, contamination and handling history, and compatibility with the experiment’s engineering needs.
Why no single shielding material solves the problem
A shield can reduce some radiation reaching the detector, but it does not replace controls for cosmic rays, radon, contamination, or other sources. Nor can a material be declared best based only on its age or name: it must be evaluated for the experiment’s target backgrounds and operating conditions. The PNNL ship-steel room is a specific, measured application; modern rare-event experiments can instead use custom-assayed materials as part of a broader background-control system.
