Why Pokémon Card Prices Differ Across Marketplaces (and How to Compare Them)

Pokémon cards do not have one official resale price. A number shown on one marketplace may be a recent-sales average, the last completed transaction, or a seller’s live asking price. The card itself may also differ by printing, language, condition, grade, region and shipping cost. To compare prices fairly, first match the exact product, then compare equivalent condition and grading, separate sold data from active listings, and calculate the buyer’s delivered cost in one currency.

There is no official Pokémon card resale price

The Pokémon Company International says it does not track secondary-market values or maintain a list of pricing sources. Its position is explicit: “The secondary market value of an item is determined by the wants and needs of the Pokémon community, not by our company.” That means a marketplace figure is an observation of trading activity or seller behavior, not an official price set by Pokémon.

Demand can change as players, collectors and investors pursue different cards. A newly popular Pokémon, a tournament result, a special illustration, a low-population graded copy or a regional buying trend can all affect the prices people are willing to pay. None of those forces creates a universal number that every site must display.

First identify what a marketplace number actually measures

Two websites can show different numbers while both are accurate because they are measuring different things. TCGplayer documents three common measures:

Displayed measure What it represents What it does not represent
Market Price An average of recent sales for a specific product in a specific condition. A guaranteed price for your copy or a live offer from a buyer.
Lowest Listing The lowest current listing based on the combined item price and shipping. The lowest sticker price before postage, or proof that the seller will accept less.
Last Sold Listing The item price plus shipping from the most recent completed sale for that product and condition. An average of the market or a forecast of the next sale.

A live listing is an asking price. A completed sale records a transaction that actually happened. A market figure averages a set of transactions according to the platform’s method. Treating all three as interchangeable is the fastest way to conclude, incorrectly, that one marketplace is overcharging or underpricing.

Why an average and a single sale diverge

A single transaction can be unusually high or low because of timing, seller reputation, listing visibility, buyer urgency or an imperfect condition description. A platform’s average may smooth several transactions, while the latest sale captures only one outcome. For scarce cards, there may be few genuinely comparable sales, so the observed range can be wide. Use the latest sale as evidence, not as a universal rule.

Match the exact card before comparing prices

Card names are not enough. Before opening a price guide or comparing listings, record the card’s identity:

  • Set name and release, including special products or subsets.
  • Collector number and rarity.
  • Printing or variant, such as a regular, reverse-holo, holo, promotional or language-specific version.
  • Language and, when relevant, regional release.
  • Whether the copy is raw (ungraded) or professionally graded.

Two cards with the same character and attack can belong to different sets or printings. Their symbols, collector numbers, artwork, holographic treatment and supply can differ, so a listing that merely matches the character name is not a valid comparable.

Condition and grading can change the comparison completely

Condition is part of the product description. TCGplayer’s raw-card categories run from Near Mint, Lightly Played, Moderately Played, Heavily Played and Damaged. The standards consider visible imperfections, wear, damage and manufacturing defects. TCGplayer does not sell cards as “Mint” or “Gem Mint,” so a seller using those words elsewhere is not using the same category system.

Compare raw cards with raw cards

A Near Mint raw card should be compared with other Near Mint raw cards. A played copy can be worth substantially less even when its front looks acceptable in a small photograph: whitening on edges, scratches in the foil, dents, bends, surface wear and print defects all affect a buyer’s assessment. Ask for clear images when a listing’s condition description is vague, and do not treat a seller’s “looks mint” wording as a standardized grade.

Compare graded cards by company and grade

A slabbed card is a different product from a raw card. For a meaningful comparison, match the grading company and numerical grade where possible, and check whether the label identifies an authentic card, an alteration or a special designation. A graded 9 from one company and a graded 9 from another are not automatically equivalent. The reviewed marketplace guidance does not establish a universal grading premium or a fixed raw-to-graded multiplier, so do not apply one as a formula.

eBay UK’s card guide covers raw singles and selected graded singles, which is useful only when the guide’s product and grade match your copy. A guide value for an ungraded card cannot be assumed to describe a slabbed card, and vice versa.

Region, currency and buyer pool create real differences

A US-dollar result and a euro or pound listing come from different currencies and often different pools of buyers. Converting the displayed amount does not make the underlying markets identical. Demand, inventory, language, import logistics and local collecting habits can vary between the United States, the United Kingdom and continental Europe.

This is why a reader may ask, “Why is my card cheaper on Cardmarket than on TCGplayer?” The answer may involve the marketplace region, the currency, the exact product selected, seller location, condition standards and shipping—not a hidden universal discount on one site. A regional comparison guide can illustrate these differences, but it should not be treated as an official definition from either platform.

Convert consistently

When comparing a US, UK and European result, write down the original currency and the date checked. Convert every figure using the same current exchange rate, then keep the marketplace and seller region next to the converted amount. Exchange rates move, so a converted number is a snapshot rather than a permanent value.

Shipping changes the price the buyer experiences

The card price alone is not always the delivered price. TCGplayer orders listings by the combined item price and shipping and gives examples in which a listing with a lower card price ranks below another listing after postage is included. Compare like with like:

  • Use the item amount plus the stated shipping for each listing.
  • Apply the same currency conversion method to both totals.
  • Check whether the shipping charge applies per card, per order or under a seller’s combined-shipping rules.
  • Keep seller location visible, because cross-border delivery can change the practical total and delivery time.

A low headline price with expensive postage is not cheaper for the buyer. Conversely, a slightly higher item price with lower shipping may produce the lower delivered total.

Timing, sample size and outliers matter

Price data has a time dimension. TCGplayer’s Market Price uses recent sales, while eBay UK says its card guide uses recent eBay sales and includes accepted Best Offer prices. Those sources may cover different windows, transactions and product classifications, so disagreement is expected.

Recent activity can also be thin. If only a few copies of a scarce card sold in a period, one unusually strong auction or one damaged copy can pull the visible range in either direction. Do not infer a stable market level from one result. Record several relevant completed sales when available, note the dates, and describe the outcome as a range.

A repeatable workflow for comparing marketplaces

  1. Identify the exact product. Record the set, collector number, printing or variant and language. Reject listings that match only the character name.
  2. Classify the format. Mark the copy as raw or graded. For a graded card, record the grading company and numerical grade; for a raw card, use a condition category that you can apply consistently.
  3. Match condition. Compare Near Mint with Near Mint, Lightly Played with Lightly Played and so on. Inspect photographs for edge whitening, surface scratches, dents, bends and other defects instead of relying on promotional language.
  4. Separate sold evidence from asking prices. Label each figure as a completed sale, a platform average, a last-sold result or a live listing. Never present a live listing as proof that a card sold at that amount.
  5. Normalize the buyer’s cost. Add shipping to the item amount, convert currencies consistently and retain the original currency for auditability.
  6. Use several recent comparables. Prefer transactions that match the same printing, condition, grade and region. If the evidence is sparse or scattered, report a range and the date checked rather than a single “true value.”

How to read major marketplace evidence

Evidence type Best use Main limitation
Platform sales average Establishing a central reference when product and condition are selected correctly. The averaging method and time window may differ from another site’s.
Last completed sale Showing what one buyer recently paid for a matched copy. One transaction can be an outlier and may not represent today’s range.
Active listing Seeing current seller expectations and available supply. An unsold asking price is not evidence of market-clearing demand.
Regional guide Understanding activity in a defined marketplace, such as eBay UK. It may not transfer to another country, currency or buyer pool.

eBay UK reported that “Pokémon” was searched more than six million times on its platform in July 2026 and that users searched for the term more than 105 times per minute on average in 2025. These figures show search activity on eBay UK, not card prices, sales volume or the size of the entire Pokémon market. The company’s announcement also described a card guide rolling out from September 1, 2026; availability and coverage can change.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

Using the cheapest live listing as “the value”

Problem: The listing may have unusually high shipping, a different condition or an incorrect printing.

Correction: Verify the product and condition, then compare the combined item-and-shipping total with completed sales.

Comparing a raw card with a slabbed card

Problem: Encapsulation and a grade change the product being sold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Build separate ranges for raw copies and for each matched grading company and numerical grade. Do not apply an invented percentage premium.

Ignoring accepted Best Offers

Problem: The visible original asking price may exceed the amount accepted.

Correction: Use the completed transaction amount when a platform reports it. eBay UK says its guide includes accepted Best Offer prices.

Converting currencies without considering region

Problem: A converted euro or pound figure can look cheaper while reflecting a different supply and buyer pool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Keep the marketplace, seller location, currency and shipping beside the converted amount.

Overreacting to one spectacular sale

Problem: A single auction may involve exceptional timing, presentation or buyer urgency.

Correction: Gather several recent, genuinely comparable sales and present the observed range.

How to state a defensible value

A careful listing, insurance note or buying decision should describe the evidence rather than claim certainty. Identify the exact card and printing, say whether the copy is raw or graded, name the condition or grade, specify the marketplace and currency, include shipping, and give the date checked. Then cite a range based on multiple relevant completed sales, with current listings shown separately as asking prices.

For example, “Recent completed sales for this exact raw Near Mint printing on the US marketplace clustered in a range on the date checked; current listings were asking more, before shipping” is more defensible than “the card is worth the highest listing.” The wording tells the reader what was measured and what remains uncertain.

What marketplace differences mean for buyers and sellers

For buyers

  • Confirm the set, number, variant and language before comparing prices.
  • Calculate the delivered total, not just the card headline.
  • Use sold data to judge whether an asking price has support.
  • Inspect condition details and photographs, especially for foil scratches, dents and edge wear.

For sellers

  • Describe condition using a recognizable scale and show defects clearly.
  • Price against matched completed sales, then decide whether your asking price reflects shipping, timing and the copy’s exact attributes.
  • State the language, printing and grade so buyers do not compare your listing with a different product.
  • Expect regional marketplaces to produce different responses; a slower sale in one region does not prove that every market values the card less.

The practical answer

Marketplace prices differ because each site may measure a different event, for a different version and condition of the card, in a different region and currency, with different shipping included. The reliable approach is not to choose one website as universally correct. Match the product, match the condition or grade, distinguish averages from completed sales and active asks, normalize shipping and currency, and use several recent comparisons. That process produces a useful range while acknowledging what no marketplace can provide: an official, guaranteed Pokémon resale price.
