What Pixel VIP is supposed to do
Pixel VIPs is managed in Google Contacts, not only in the notification shade. Open Contacts > Organize > Pixel VIPs to choose the people whose messages deserve special treatment. Google allows up to eight VIPs. A VIP is also added to Favorites, which can let that person bypass Do Not Disturb, while the notification-prioritization feature uses Android priority conversations to place messages near the top of the notification list.
Google says prioritization is enabled by default for Messages and WhatsApp notifications, and that you can customize it for each VIP through Settings. That default does not override the app’s own notification permission, message categories, sound settings, or a Mode that filters alerts. The VIP entry and the actual conversation therefore need to be checked separately.

Start with the symptom
Identify which result you are seeing before changing settings. The same VIP setup can produce different fixes depending on whether Android receives the notification, suppresses its presentation, or never receives an alert from the app.

Fix Pixel VIP notifications step by step
1. Confirm the person is still a Pixel VIP
- Open Google Contacts.
- Tap Organize.
- Open Pixel VIPs.
- Confirm the affected person is selected. If not, add the correct contact and save.
Check that you selected the contact record used by the messaging app. Duplicate or outdated contact records can make it look as though the VIP setting disappeared from a conversation. Pixel VIPs supports up to eight people; if the list is full, remove an entry before adding another.
2. Mark the actual conversation as priority
VIP membership and conversation priority are related but distinct. Android applies priority to a conversation thread, so inspect the recent thread for the person rather than relying only on the VIP list.
- Open Settings > Notifications > Conversations.
- Find the affected recent conversation.
- Select it and mark it as Priority, if that option is available.
On Android, priority conversations are designed to appear at the top of the notification list and can remain visible when Do Not Disturb is active. Menu names and the exact route can vary by Android release, so use the closest equivalent under Notifications if your Pixel presents a different layout.
3. Re-enable the app and its message category
If Android is not allowed to post the notification, Pixel VIP cannot restore it. Check both the app-wide switch and the category for the affected type of message.
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Select Messages or WhatsApp, depending on where the VIP message arrives.
- Turn on the main notification switch.
- Open the listed notification categories and enable the category used by incoming messages.
Some apps expose separate categories for conversations, calls, groups, or other events. If only one class of message is missing, changing the category is more precise than resetting every notification preference.
4. Determine whether the alert is silent rather than missing
Android distinguishes an alert from a silent notification. An alert can make a sound or vibrate; a silent notification can still appear in the notification shade without either signal. That means a message visible in the shade has been delivered to Android even if it did not interrupt you.

- Pull down the notification shade when a test message arrives.
- Check whether the conversation is labeled or configured as Silent.
- Change the app or conversation to Default or Alerts.
- Verify the phone’s notification volume, sound, and vibration settings.
Do not treat the absence of sound as proof that the app failed to deliver. First establish whether the notification is present but quiet.
5. Inspect Do Not Disturb and other Modes
Open the active Mode or Do Not Disturb settings and review both who and what is allowed through.
- Open Settings > Modes or Settings > Notifications > Do Not Disturb, depending on your Pixel’s software.
- Review the Mode’s People filters and confirm the VIP or priority conversation is permitted.
- Review the Apps filters and allow Messages or WhatsApp when necessary.
- Check display settings for filtered notifications, including whether filtered alerts are hidden from the shade or lock screen.
- Turn off the Mode temporarily and send a test message to separate a Mode rule from an app problem.
Google’s Android instructions note that Mode labels and available menus vary by device and that some controls require Android 14 or later. A VIP being in Favorites helps with interruption rules, but it does not make every app-level or display filter irrelevant.
6. Check Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery when alerts are delayed
Battery-saving features can stop or postpone some alerts. This is especially relevant when notifications arrive only after you wake the phone, open the app, or disable a saver.

- Check whether Battery Saver is on, including any schedule that turns it on automatically.
- Look at Adaptive Battery if delays occur without an obvious Do Not Disturb rule.
- Temporarily disable the relevant saver and send a test message.
Google specifically warns that Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery can stop or delay some notifications. If disabling them restores timely alerts, re-enable one feature at a time to identify which trade-off you prefer instead of assuming the VIP feature itself is broken.
WhatsApp-specific causes
Companion Mode can prevent prioritization
Google identifies WhatsApp Companion Mode as a limitation for notification prioritization. Companion Mode is used with linked tablets, secondary phones, or computers; the Pixel VIP prioritization feature is primarily designed for WhatsApp on the main phone.
If the missing priority is on a linked device, verify the same chat on the primary phone before changing unrelated Android settings. Ordinary WhatsApp delivery and Pixel VIP prioritization are different issues: Companion Mode can explain why a priority treatment is absent, but it does not by itself prove that a message failed to arrive.

Refresh WhatsApp contact synchronization
On the main phone, Google documents contact synchronization as another possible conflict. The labels can change between WhatsApp versions, but the documented paths are:

- For one person, open that contact’s chat or contact card, tap More > Edit, and turn off Sync contact to phone.
- Restart the phone.
- Check the conversation’s priority again and send a new test message.
Use the individual-contact option when the problem is limited to one VIP and you do not want to alter synchronization for every WhatsApp contact. Because WhatsApp changes menu names, look for the equivalent contact-sync control if your version labels it differently.
Use the failure pattern to choose the next check
Only one VIP is silent or missing
Recheck the contact in Contacts > Organize > Pixel VIPs, then inspect that person’s conversation under Settings > Notifications > Conversations. If the notification appears without sound, change the conversation from Silent to Default or Alerts. This pattern usually points to a contact-level or thread-level setting rather than a phone-wide permission.
All Messages conversations are affected
Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > Messages. Confirm the app switch and the relevant category are enabled. Then inspect any active Mode and check Battery Saver if alerts are late rather than entirely absent.
All WhatsApp conversations are affected
Check WhatsApp’s app notification permission and message category first. If the problem concerns prioritization rather than delivery, confirm that you are testing on the main phone, not a Companion Mode device. Contact synchronization is the next WhatsApp-specific check.
Notifications appear only after using the phone
Start with Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery, then review scheduled Do Not Disturb or another Mode. A notification that appears when you unlock the phone may have been delayed by background restrictions rather than blocked by the VIP list.
Notifications are visible but never interrupt
Change the conversation or app category from Silent to Default/Alerts, verify notification volume and vibration, and inspect Mode display filters. The shade’s presence confirms that Android received the event; the remaining problem is presentation or interruption policy.
A controlled test prevents guesswork
After each change, send one new message from the same person and observe three places: the lock screen, the notification shade, and the notification list’s ordering. Record whether it appears immediately, whether it is marked Priority, and whether it makes a sound or vibrates. Change one layer at a time so you know which setting affected the result.
Use a second, non-VIP conversation as a comparison only to identify scope. If both conversations are absent, inspect the app and Mode layers. If the other conversation works while the VIP does not, return to the contact and thread checks. For WhatsApp, repeat the test on the main phone before drawing conclusions from a tablet, computer, or secondary phone.

- It does not ensure prioritization on WhatsApp Companion Mode devices.
- It does not diagnose a general app-delivery failure when ordinary notifications are also missing.
These boundaries explain why repeatedly re-adding someone to Pixel VIPs may accomplish nothing: the block can be in the conversation, app category, presentation mode, battery policy, or WhatsApp’s linked-device and contact-sync behavior.
