Physical game releases are shrinking because digital distribution lets publishers sell without pressing and shipping a disc or cartridge for each copy, reach buyers beyond retail shelves, and keep games available after launch. Players have also shifted toward digital purchases. The change is uneven, however: boxed games still sell, and “digital-only” does not describe every new release or every platform.
Why are physical game releases disappearing?
Digital distribution changes the cost and reach of a release
A physical edition has to be manufactured, packaged and distributed, and it competes for limited retail shelf space. Digital distribution avoids those physical production steps and can make a game available through a platform store across multiple markets. Publishers can also adjust digital prices and keep older games in their catalogs after the initial launch window.

Capcom has described the trade-offs directly: it says physical distribution limited the shelf space it could secure, its control over pricing and its anti-piracy measures. The company also points to digital sales as a way to sell older titles over time and make catalog revenue more stable after development costs have been amortized. Those are Capcom’s stated business advantages, not proof that every digital sale earns more: platform fees, marketing, hosting and a game’s performance still affect the economics. Player habits and publisher decisions both matter
Sony has cited consumers’ shift from physical discs to digital, while Capcom emphasizes the commercial advantages of digital distribution. Both help explain the direction of travel, but available figures do not isolate how much of the change comes from player preference versus publishers offering fewer boxed editions, differences in platform mix or retail strategy. It is not possible to assign a precise share of the decline to any one cause.

How much of the market is still physical?
There is no single global physical-release share established by the figures cited here. The available measures cover particular companies, platforms and regions, so they show the trend without serving as a census of the entire games industry.
EA’s console sales show a rising digital share
Electronic Arts estimated the share of its full-game units sold digitally on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 as follows. These are EA figures for those consoles, not industry-wide percentages. EA says Microsoft and Sony supply its digital unit counts, while it estimates packaged-goods units using retail and distribution partners in North America, Europe and Asia. UK boxed sales remain substantial, but declined in 2024
The UK figures below cover boxed game sales, not all game spending or worldwide sales. They show that physical games still generated meaningful sales in 2024 even as sales fell year over year. ERA reported the figures in its 2025 Yearbook.

Capcom’s figures show physical sales alongside digital growth
Capcom’s sales-volume table reports 5,493 digital units and 413 physical units for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. The table’s unit scale is tens of thousands, so those figures equal 54.93 million digital units and 4.13 million physical units for Capcom—not figures for the whole industry. The next fiscal-year row is marked as a plan, not a completed result. Capcom’s sales data provides the company-specific figures.
What does Sony’s 2028 announcement mean?
Sony said that production of physical game discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. Its announcement explicitly excludes games already released or due to release before January 2028 in disc format. It is a future change to new PlayStation disc production—not an immediate end to all physical PlayStation games, a policy covering other console makers, or a statement that existing discs will stop working. Sony’s July 1, 2026 announcement gives the scope and timing.
Who benefits when games move to digital?
Publishers gain distribution and pricing flexibility
Publishers can avoid physical manufacturing and distribution for digital copies, reach customers through online storefronts and keep older titles available for sale. They may also have more flexibility to change prices than when relying on retail stock and shelf placement. How much these advantages improve net earnings varies by publisher and title; the cited company statements do not establish a universal margin gain.

Platform storefronts become a more central sales route
When a customer buys a download through a console storefront, that store is the route for the purchase and the account-based library. The growth figures and Sony’s announcement show the importance of digital distribution, but the sources here do not quantify how much extra profit platform holders earn specifically because physical releases decline.

As more new-game purchases move online, retailers and businesses involved in manufacturing and distributing boxed games face reduced demand for that part of the market. The cited sources do not measure the overall effect on retail revenue or employment, so it would be misleading to give a sector-wide job or loss estimate.
Players trade convenience for some forms of control
Digital buyers can avoid a trip to a shop or waiting for local stock, and may find older games still listed after their retail editions disappear. Physical buyers have a tangible disc or cartridge and may be able to lend or resell it, depending on the platform, edition and applicable terms. Neither format guarantees permanent access: account terms, redownload availability and online services can matter as much as the object or download a buyer starts with.

Does a boxed game guarantee a complete, lasting copy?
No. A box may contain a disc or cartridge, a download code, or a game that requires additional downloads or online services. The specific edition’s contents and offline functionality matter more than the fact that it comes in a box. Games that rely on company servers can lose some or all functionality when those servers shut down.
That server risk is also a policy question. In a 2026 communication, the European Commission said it plans stakeholder engagement on game end-of-life issues by the end of 2026; its response did not propose a general legal obligation to keep commercially discontinued games playable. What should you check before choosing physical or digital?
- What is included? Check whether the package contains game media, a download code, or a game that needs a substantial download or additional installation data.
- Can you play offline? Look for account, activation and server requirements, and distinguish a game’s online multiplayer from its offline modes.
- What can you transfer? Check the platform and edition’s terms and practical rules for lending, resale, account transfer and future redownloads rather than assuming either format gives you a particular right.
- What is the actual price and availability? Compare the store price with the local physical edition at the time of purchase; boxed stock and digital discounts vary.
- Which inconvenience matters more? Physical copies need storage and may require swapping; digital purchases need download time, device space and access to the relevant account.
