A reading that seems wrong can result from the target’s material, reflected heat, distance, focus, framing, or measurement settings—not necessarily a faulty camera. Check those factors first, and treat the thermal image’s colors separately from its numeric temperature reading.
Start by checking what the number measures
Before changing settings, make sure the spot meter or measurement area is actually on the surface you want to check. A tiny target, an edge, or a measurement area that spills onto nearby objects can produce a number that does not represent the feature you intended to measure. Frame the target so the measurement area covers it cleanly. There is no universal minimum target size for every phone thermal camera, so follow the guidance for your model.

Thermal cameras estimate surface temperature from infrared radiation. The estimate depends on how the target emits radiation and on measurement conditions; it is not the same as touching the object with a contact thermometer.

Set emissivity for the surface
Emissivity describes how effectively a surface emits infrared radiation. The FLIR ONE Pro guide says its default “matte” setting is a reasonable approximation for many materials, but it is not appropriate for every surface. If your camera lets you select emissivity or a material preset, choose one suited to the target rather than assuming the default is correct. FLIR notes that spot-meter accuracy depends in part on the observed material’s emissivity: FLIR ONE Pro User Guide.
#1 Best Overall
- COMPATIBILITY: Infrared camera plugs directly into phone charging port and connects with iphones with USB-C (iphone 15 and newer)
- SUPER RESOLUTION: Vivid IR technology upscales the image to 240x180 from 80x60 for greater detail and clarity. Flir MSX technology merges thermal and visual images to enhance details in real time.
- THERMAL INSPECTION GUIDES: Within the Flir One app is a step-by-step inspection guide to help you address typical faults easily and perform accurate home inspections. Find air leaks, moisture buildup, and more
- ACCURACY: Measures temperature within ±3°C or ±5% when the unit is within 15 °C – 35 °C and the scene is within 5 °C – 120 °C
- JOBSITE TOUGH: Built to take the abuse that working on a jobsite dishes out every day, rated to take a drop from 1.5 meters and is built to last
Be cautious with shiny or reflective surfaces
Glossy surfaces and metals are often poor emitters of infrared radiation. They can reflect the temperature of nearby objects or the room, making the camera’s apparent temperature differ from the object’s actual surface temperature. Reflected surroundings matter especially when emissivity is low. FLIR’s measurement-parameter guidance explains that reflected temperature is used to compensate for radiation reflected by the object. If your model offers a reflected-temperature setting, use the guidance for that model and the conditions at the target; do not expect a setting to make a highly reflective surface as straightforward to measure as a matte one.
Check distance and surrounding conditions
Distance and ambient temperature affect FLIR ONE Pro spot readings, according to its user guide. FLIR’s broader technical guidance also identifies object distance, atmospheric temperature, and humidity as measurement parameters; atmospheric effects become more relevant at longer distances. Keep the camera at a practical distance, and use the settings available on your particular model.

Adjustable emissivity, ambient temperature, and distance settings reduce environmental interference and improve temperature accuracy.
- Compact and Long-Lasting: Use the Thermal Master App for seamless device control. With low power consumption of just 0.32W, the P1 supports 5–8 hours of continuous operation. Compact and lightweight, it measures 2.32×1.06×0.68 inches (59×27×17.2mm) and weighs only 0.62oz (17g), making it easy to carry in a shirt pocket. The package includes the P1 thermal camera, a zipper case, a 50cm extension cable, and a quick start guide.
For operators who do not know the relevant values, FLIR’s general documentation recommends starting values of emissivity 0.95, reflected temperature 20°C, relative humidity 50%, atmospheric temperature 20°C, and distance 1 m. These are generic recommendations from FLIR, not universal settings or a replacement for selecting values suited to the material and conditions.
Focus and frame the target carefully
Focus affects temperature measurement, not just image sharpness. An unfocused image can cause measurement errors, especially when the target is small. If the camera supports focus adjustment, focus on the surface you are measuring and check that the measurement area remains on that surface.

- WIDE TEMPERATURE RANGE: Measures -4 to 752-Degree Fahrenheit (-20 to 400-Degree Celsius) with three color palettes (ironbow, rainbow, grayscale) for optimal visualization
Seek’s troubleshooting guidance recommends evaluating focus against a high-contrast scene rather than a low-contrast wall or desk. See Seek Compact Series troubleshooting for model-specific advice.
Separate the temperature number from the image colors
The palette maps temperatures to colors; the image scale determines how the thermal information is displayed. Changing a palette or adjusting an auto/manual scale can make the scene look markedly different without establishing that the measured temperature itself changed. Judge the numeric measurement separately from the colors.

Troubleshoot a bad or missing image
If the camera will not connect or the image remains defective, treat that as a connection or hardware problem rather than trying to correct it with temperature settings. FLIR and Seek recommend model-specific checks that include:
- Check that the phone connector is fully seated and clean.
- Restart the camera app; if needed, restart the phone.
- Try the camera with another compatible phone, if available.
- Follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting and support instructions for the specific camera.
For FLIR ONE Pro, see the user guide; for Seek Compact, see its troubleshooting page.
When to suspect a limitation or fault
If a reading remains implausible after checking the target area, emissivity, reflections, distance, ambient conditions, focus, range, and calibration, compare the behavior with the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance. A model’s specified range is not an accuracy guarantee: for example, the FLIR ONE Pro guide says its extended range can measure up to 400°C (752°F), but that is a model-specific maximum, not a capability shared by all phone thermal cameras.

If considering replacement hardware, compare the phone and operating-system compatibility, focus capability, supported temperature range, available measurement settings, calibration behavior, and manufacturer support. A different camera will not fix a measurement mistake caused by emissivity or reflected radiation.
