A blurry scan usually needs a fresh capture; a crooked scan usually needs editing. Start by retaking any page whose letters are not clear, then use crop and rotate controls to correct framing and orientation. If the page is curved, skewed, shadowed, stained, or low-contrast, use the correction tools your scanning app actually provides and inspect the saved file before sharing. The available guidance does not identify one universal physical cause of blur, nor does it show that one app always produces the sharpest result.
First decide whether the problem is the capture or the page geometry
Phone scanning combines two separate jobs. The camera creates an image of the paper, and the app edits that image into a document. A defect in the original capture cannot be reliably repaired by changing the crop, while a perfectly readable capture can look wrong if its boundaries or orientation were detected poorly.

Focus, movement, lighting, the source paper, and device hardware are possible explanations in a specific case, but the appearance alone does not prove which one applies.

How to fix a blurry phone scan
1. Retake instead of trying to invent missing detail
When characters are genuinely smeared or indistinct, begin with a new capture. Google Drive’s iPhone and iPad workflow and its Android workflow both include a Retake control. The documented workflows also allow automatic or manual capture, so you can choose the method that gives you a usable frame in the app you are using.

- Choose Retake rather than saving the unclear image.
- Capture the page again using the app’s automatic or manual capture mode.
- Read several lines in the new preview before applying other edits.
- Keep the new capture only if the letters and small marks are actually legible.
Retaking is important because crop, rotation, filters, and contrast adjustments change existing pixels; they cannot reconstruct information that was never recorded clearly. If a second capture is still unclear, the available product documentation does not tell you whether the cause is focus, movement, illumination, the paper itself, or a hardware fault. Record the symptom for the specific phone and conditions rather than treating one explanation as certain.
2. Check the page itself before blaming the app
Compare the unclear area with the physical sheet. A faint photocopy, very small type, glossy reflection, or a mark already present on the paper can limit what any camera records. This check does not diagnose the phone; it prevents you from applying an image correction to a problem that exists in the source document.
3. Inspect the exported file, not only the live preview
A preview can look fine while an exported document contains an incorrect crop or an unreadable region. After saving, open the resulting PDF or JPG and inspect headings, body text, numbers, signatures, and the edges of the page. Google Drive’s Android documentation describes saving a scan as PDF or JPG; Adobe Scan’s instructions describe saving a PDF. Use a fresh capture if the saved file still lacks readable detail.
How to fix a crooked, skewed, or badly framed scan
Crop first when the boundary is wrong
A scan can look crooked simply because the detected page boundary includes too much desk or cuts into one side. Open the crop control and set the boundary to the four corners of the paper. Google Drive documents crop controls in both its iOS and Android scanning workflows. After cropping, inspect each edge: a straight page should not have a triangular strip of background on one side or missing content on the other.
Rotate when the whole page is turned
Use the rotation control when the document is consistently tilted in the frame. Google Drive documents rotation on iOS and Android, and Adobe Scan documents manual rotation. Rotation changes orientation; it does not repair a page whose lines are bowed or a capture whose text is already blurred.

Use straighten or curvature correction for a bowed page
Some editors offer a separate correction for geometry that is more complex than a simple turn. Adobe Scan’s iOS documentation describes a Straighten Image control for curvature correction. Adobe Acrobat’s camera-image enhancement documentation describes enhancement that can address skewed angles. These controls are app- and platform-specific, so the absence of a button in one app does not indicate that the phone cannot scan documents.
- Correct the page boundary with crop.
- Apply ordinary rotation if the entire image is turned.
- Use a straighten or enhancement control only when the app provides one for curvature or skew.
- Read text near the edges and in tables after the correction.
- Undo the change or make a new capture if the correction bends letters or removes content.
How to improve shadows, stains, and low contrast
When the page is readable but visually dirty, use the tools documented for your app rather than assuming every scanner has the same controls.

Google Drive’s iOS and Android guidance lists filters and a cleanup tool. Cleanup is intended for marks such as stains and fingers. Apply the least aggressive setting that makes the page easier to read, then inspect thin lines, punctuation, signatures, and shaded areas: removing a mark can also remove legitimate detail.
Adobe Scan brightness and contrast
Adobe Scan documents brightness and contrast adjustments. Raise or lower these controls while checking both dark text and light paper. A stronger-looking page is not automatically a more accurate page; stop when the original characters remain distinct.
Adobe Acrobat enhancement
Adobe Acrobat’s camera-image enhancement documentation describes help for poor lighting, shadows, and skewed angles. Availability and the exact controls depend on the Acrobat version and platform. Enhancement is not a guarantee that every shadowed or faint original can be restored, so review the corrected file at normal reading size.

Platform workflows you can follow
Google Drive on iPhone or iPad
- Start a document scan in the Google Drive mobile app.
- Capture automatically or manually, according to the mode shown in the app.
- If the preview is unclear, choose Retake and capture the page again.
- Open crop and set the page boundary to the paper’s edges.
- Use rotate if the page orientation is wrong.
- Try a filter or cleanup control for stains, fingers, or similar marks.
- Save only after reading the resulting page in the preview.
These controls are described in Google Drive Help’s “Scan documents with Google Drive – iPhone & iPad” instructions. The exact arrangement of buttons may change as the app is updated.
Google Drive on Android
- Start a scan in the Google Drive Android app.
- Review the captured page and select Retake if text is not clear.
- Use crop to correct the detected boundary.
- Use rotate to correct orientation.
- Apply a filter or cleanup tool when marks or uneven appearance are the problem.
- Save as PDF or JPG, then open the saved file and check it.

Adobe Scan on iOS
- Capture the page with Adobe Scan’s automatic or manual capture workflow.
- Adjust the crop manually if the detected boundary is not accurate.
- Rotate the page when its orientation is incorrect.
- Use Straighten Image for the curvature correction described in Adobe’s iOS instructions.
- Adjust brightness and contrast when the page needs tonal correction.
- Save the scan as a PDF only after checking the page at the edges and in the text area.
Adobe’s “Take scans — Adobe Scan for iOS” and “Modify your scans — Adobe Scan for iOS” guidance describes these capture and editing functions. Feature names and placement can change in later releases.
Apple Notes
Apple confirms that Notes can scan documents on iPhone and iPad. The available Apple instructions establish the scanning capability but do not provide enough detail here to claim that Notes has the same crop, straighten, cleanup, or enhancement controls listed for the other apps. If a Notes scan is crooked or unclear, use the controls actually displayed in your current version and verify the saved document.

A complete review before you save or share
Use this check on every page, especially when the scan will be used as a record or sent to someone else.
- Content: every heading, line, number, signature, and handwritten mark that matters is readable.
- Boundary: all four edges of the paper are included, with no unnecessary desk area dominating the image.
- Orientation: the page reads in the intended direction and is not rotated.
- Geometry: lines are not visibly bowed or skewed after any straighten or enhancement operation.
- Appearance: filters, cleanup, brightness, and contrast have not erased faint characters or signatures.
- Export: the saved PDF or JPG matches what you approved in the editor.
If any item fails, correct it before sharing. If the underlying image remains unclear, return to capture and retake rather than continuing to stack edits on the same page.
What these fixes cannot establish
Software controls can change framing, orientation, geometry, and appearance. They cannot prove why a particular phone produced blur, and they cannot recreate detail that the camera never recorded. The cited documentation does not support a universal claim that blur is always caused by camera shake, poor focus, a defective lens, lighting, or a particular phone model. A device-specific diagnosis requires evidence from that device and those capture conditions.
Likewise, the documented feature lists do not establish a winner for scan quality. Google Drive, Adobe Scan, Apple Notes, and Acrobat should be chosen according to the platform and correction controls you need, not an unsupported claim that one is universally sharper. - Is the page boundary wrong? Crop it to the paper.
- Is the whole page turned? Rotate it.
