A phone that looks different after months of use is usually showing one of four things: oil or dirt sitting on the surface, material transferred from something else, physical wear such as scratches and chipped paint, or a real change in the material or coating. Only the first two usually clean off. Which one you have depends on your exact model and surface, so start with the maker’s cleaning instructions and a soft, lint-free cloth. Don’t polish or chemically treat a finish without guidance for that model.
“Discoloration” is not one problem
People use the word for very different things. Sorting yours into the right category tells you whether cleaning is worth trying.

The main causes
Friction and contact with hard objects
Huawei’s support guidance attributes scratches, wear and chipped paint on metal or plastic rear covers and frames to contact with hard surfaces and objects, such as tables, or items in pockets and bags. It notes that dark or glossy finishes make wear more noticeable because of the contrast. Repeatedly inserting and removing a SIM or memory card can also wear the area around the slot.
Skin oils and material transfer
A mark may be on the finish rather than in it. Apple says material transfer on certain textured glass or Ceramic Shield surfaces can resemble a scratch, and that it can be removed in most cases. Apple also says skin oils may temporarily change the color of the outer band on specified iPhone models, and that wiping with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth restores the original look. Check Apple’s page for your iPhone model, because the guidance is model-specific.

Apple’s screens also carry a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic (oil-repellent) coating, and Apple states that this coating wears over time with normal use. That is why an older screen can feel and look smudgier than a new one, and why aggressive cleaning accelerates the problem.
Air, humidity and UV light
Xiaomi says the anodized metal decorative parts of the POCO X7 Pro can show a slight color change over time with exposure to air, humidity and UV light, and that this does not affect function or structural integrity. That is one maker’s explanation for one model, not proof that every metal finish ages the same way.

Chemicals on specific materials
Xiaomi warns that alcohol above 75% concentration can react with the PU-leather coating on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra battery cover, causing swelling, discoloration or peeling, and recommends a soft cloth with mild cleaning solutions. This does not mean alcohol harms every phone: Apple permits certain alcohol wipes for specified disinfection use on iPhone while warning against other products and abrasives. The lesson is to match the cleaner to the material and the maker’s instructions.

Often the thing that has changed color is the case, not the phone. Belkin says sunlight, heat and certain chemicals can affect a case’s appearance over time, and advises avoiding prolonged heat and contact with dyes, cosmetics and lotions. HONOR notes that cases naturally wear and may change color, and that such a change does not compromise the case’s protection. Belkin also says natural hand oils can make some soft-touch case areas look shiny, and that microfiber cleaning usually restores them.

How to clean safely
- Look up your exact model in the maker’s support pages (for iPhone, Apple’s “Cleaning your iPhone”).
- Power down if the instructions say so, and keep moisture out of ports and openings.
- Wipe with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free or microfiber cloth. Don’t spray liquid directly onto the phone.
- If a mark remains, check whether it is a scratch, chipped paint or coating change. Further scrubbing will not help and can make wear worse.
Avoid abrasives, rough scrubbing pads, bleach, acetone and any cleaner the maker hasn’t approved for that surface. For disinfecting, follow the product-specific instructions.
Cleaning and replacing a case
Remove the case and clean it according to its maker’s instructions. For Belkin cases, that means gentle cleaning with microfiber and water or mild soap as appropriate, then letting the case dry fully before refitting. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners. Even with good care, a clear case may still yellow over time. If it has, replacing it is the practical fix; choose one made for your exact phone model.

Check inside the case from time to time as well. Grit trapped between the case and the phone can contribute to wear on the finish.

- Use a well-fitting case. Huawei recommends one to help prevent physical damage, though it won’t stop all finish or case color changes.
- Keep the phone away from keys, coins and other hard items in pockets and bags.
- Limit prolonged heat and strong sunlight, especially for cases.
- Keep lotions, cosmetics and dyes away from clear and light-colored cases.
When to get service
If wear affects normal use, such as damage around a card tray or a coating that is peeling off, Huawei advises backing up the device and going to an authorized service center. Cosmetic fading alone generally doesn’t need repair.
