But resemblance is not authentication: earlier geological examinations concluded that the feature is natural, and a university project still underway has not established otherwise.
What is the Durupınar formation?
Durupınar is a natural geological formation near Doğubayazıt in eastern Türkiye, not an authenticated wooden vessel. Turkish army captain İlhan Durupınar noticed its boatlike shape in aerial photographs in 1959. Geologist Lorence G. Collins reported its length as 157 metres (515 feet) in 2016.

The outline invites comparison with a ship, but a shape alone cannot show that people built it. The history of the Ark claim is a story of repeated interpretation: people see a suggestive landscape, proponents read its features as evidence, and geologists offer natural explanations for the same features.

How did the Ark claim develop?
The 1960 expedition
An expedition associated with the Archaeological Research Foundation and led by George Vandeman and Arthur Brandenberger examined the site in 1960. Its surveys “revealed no sign that the object was man-made,” according to the expedition’s conclusion as recounted by Eric Vanden Eykel. The team judged the formation to be natural.

Ron Wyatt and David Fasold
Ron Wyatt revisited the site from the late 1970s onward and argued that scans showed ship-like features and materials. David Fasold initially supported the Ark interpretation and published a book about it in 1988. He later changed his position and joined geologist Lorence Collins in a critique.
Fasold’s revised conclusion, as quoted by Vanden Eykel, was that “the supposed Ark near [Doğubayazıt] is a completely natural rock formation. It cannot have been Noah’s Ark nor even a man-made model.”

What do proponents point to, and what do geologists say?
Supporters of the Ark identification have pointed to the formation’s outline and reported length, internal lines or right angles, radar interpretations, and large stones they identify as anchors. Some also compare the length with dimensions in the biblical account using a chosen measure for the cubit. These are interpretations of observations, not by themselves proof that a vessel is present.
| Feature | Ark proponents’ interpretation | Geological explanation in published analyses |
|---|---|---|
| Boatlike outline and internal patterns | Suggest the remains of a ship or its structure. | Geologist Murat Avcı’s interpretation, reported by Vanden Eykel, is that a large limestone block moved downslope in a landslide and was shaped by earthflow and related processes. |
| Material called “petrified wood” | Presented as possible remains of a vessel. | Collins identifies the material as basalt. |
| Features called iron washers, rivets or brackets | Read as possible metal fittings. | Collins identifies them as cemented mineral grains. |
| Large stones called anchors | Interpreted as evidence associated with a ship. | Collins says such rocks occur naturally in the area. |
These explanations address the particular rocks and features at Durupınar. They do not settle theological questions about Noah or the meaning of Genesis. Collins’s 2016 paper sets out the geological case in more detail: “Noah’s Ark near Dogubayazit, Turkey?”.

What has the current research project established?
A project directed by Cenker Atila at Sivas Cumhuriyet University is described as officially approved and ongoing. Its project website lists geophysical work including ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), LiDAR and core drilling. The website also repeats some interpretations made by Ark proponents, but describes the project’s output as geophysical documentation—not authentication of a historical or religious claim. It characterizes the data as suggestive rather than conclusive.
As of October 6, 2026, Vanden Eykel reported that the project’s results were preliminary and inconclusive, samples were awaiting laboratory analysis, and evaluation was expected to continue into 2027. Scans or survey methods can document what lies beneath or within a formation; they do not, without corroborating evidence and analysis, prove that it is a human-built ship. The project’s stated scope and caveats appear on its about page.

Why does the story endure?
A landscape that seems to fit
The formation’s outline makes the Ark idea easy to imagine. Once a feature is framed as a vessel, lines can look like walls, rock can be read as hardware, and nearby stones can seem purposeful. The same observations need to be tested against other explanations, especially when geology offers natural processes that can produce unusual shapes and patterns.
A familiar story with a long literary history
Genesis’s flood story belongs to a wider ancient Near Eastern tradition that includes Atrahasis and the Epic of Gilgamesh. Those narratives also tell of a warned survivor who builds a boat. Vanden Eykel, a scholar of early Christianity, emphasizes that Genesis reshapes this shared tradition rather than simply copying it: in his reading, Genesis makes violence and corruption central to the flood, and ends with a covenant.

That literary context helps explain the story’s continuing cultural and religious significance, but it neither proves nor disproves the Ark’s existence. A geological identification and a religious reading of Genesis are different questions.
How to assess new Ark claims about Durupınar
- Separate observation from interpretation. A radar pattern, line or boatlike outline is an observation; calling it a hull or fitting is an interpretation.
- Ask whether materials have been identified. A claim about wood or metal is stronger when samples are analyzed and the methods and results are available for scrutiny.
- Look for independent, published analysis. A project’s own description of its findings is not the same as independent confirmation of an archaeological identification.
- Check the date and status. The Sivas Cumhuriyet University project was unfinished in the October 2026 account; its surveys should not be described as a completed discovery.
Eric Vanden Eykel’s account of the claim’s history, geology and biblical context was published by Phys.org as a republication of The Conversation on October 6, 2026: “Why people keep looking for Noah’s Ark in a natural rock formation in Turkey”.
