Online businesses can accept Monero (XMR) through a wallet address or QR code, or automate checkout with payment software or a gateway. The Monero Project says merchant adoption is “continuously rising” and links merchant interest to financial privacy, but the sources available do not quantify growth in 2026. That makes privacy a stated reason for acceptance—not proof of a measured surge.
Why businesses consider accepting Monero
Financial privacy is the clearest stated reason
The Monero Project says, “Over the years, merchants of all kinds have come to value the financial privacy that Monero brings.” That explains the project’s view of merchant interest, but it is not independent research into why individual businesses adopt XMR. For a merchant, accepting it may give customers who prefer a privacy-oriented payment option another way to pay.

Broader survey data provides context, not Monero-specific evidence. The National Cryptocurrency Association’s 2026 Crypto Merchant Report says 40% of surveyed US merchant decision-makers cited customer privacy as a reason they value crypto acceptance. The online survey was fielded October 21–27, 2025, among 619 payment-strategy decision-makers in retail and e-commerce, hospitality and travel, luxury and specialty, and digital goods and gaming. It measured attitudes toward crypto generally, not Monero acceptance or its growth.

Potential demand, relevant directory traffic, setup effort, custody, price volatility, and conversion needs are questions for each business to assess. The sources do not quantify how accepting XMR affects sales, customer acquisition, or costs, and they do not establish that it automatically reduces fees or guarantees faster settlement.

What the 2026 adoption claim does—and does not—show
The Monero Project’s merchant page says adoption is “continuously rising.” The statement is the project’s characterization; it is not accompanied by a measured growth rate. The reviewed sources establish no Monero-specific statistic showing how much online merchant acceptance grew in 2026.
Directories offer a snapshot of listings, not a time series. For example, Monero Directory reported 332 listings across 41 categories on its page observed October 7, 2026. That is the directory’s own count, not an independently audited tally of active businesses. It cannot establish growth by itself.

How a business can accept XMR
Manual payments for occasional transactions
A low-volume business can provide a wallet address or invoice link and check for payment in its wallet. Monero’s official receiving instructions cover addresses, QR codes, and subaddresses. Subaddresses can help separate receipts—for example, by customer or invoice—without requiring a full ecommerce integration.

Manual handling requires the merchant to create and communicate payment details, monitor receipts, and reconcile them with orders. It may suit occasional transactions; businesses with regular online orders should consider whether manual checks fit their workflow.
Automated checkout for online stores
Payment software can connect a checkout to order handling, while a hosted gateway may offer store plugins and payment-processing features. Self-hosted software can offer more control for a custom implementation, but calls for the technical capacity to deploy and maintain it. A wallet is useful for receiving manual payments, but it is not by itself a complete ecommerce checkout system.
A Monero.com merchant guide outlines hosted and self-hosted approaches, but its provider references, integrations, and fee details may have changed. The official business documentation includes a comparison matrix dated January 28, 2019, so treat it as historical context rather than current confirmation of support or terms.

Choose a route by comparing operational needs
- Volume and workflow: Decide whether staff can reliably monitor manual payments or whether orders need automated processing.
- Technical capacity: Compare a hosted service’s convenience with the control and maintenance responsibilities of self-hosted software.
- Store compatibility: Confirm current support for the specific ecommerce platform and checkout flow.
- Custody and settlement: Establish who controls incoming XMR, when funds become available, and whether settlement stays in XMR or involves conversion.
- Conversion and volatility: Decide whether to retain XMR or convert received funds, and check how the chosen provider handles conversion.
- Fees and geography: Verify current charges, supported locations, and service terms directly with the provider.
No option is established as universally best. The Monero Project’s business documentation and the Monero.com merchant guide explain approaches, but current provider support, pricing, and availability need direct confirmation.

The Monero Project links to merchant directories and tells users to do their own research before trusting a listed business. Monero.com also maintains a merchant marketplace with categories. These listings help with discovery, but neither a listing nor a category page guarantees that a seller still accepts XMR.
Best Value
Monero Directory’s reported count is a directory snapshot, not an endorsement or an independently verified measure of active merchants. Before paying, confirm acceptance and terms with the seller directly.
- Check the seller’s current payment page or contact the business to confirm that it accepts XMR now.
- Verify the checkout domain and payment instructions before sending funds.
- Review the seller’s payment, refund, and order terms; do not assume they match the terms for other payment methods.
- If you do not know the merchant, proceed cautiously rather than treating a directory listing as verification.
What readers and merchants can reasonably conclude
Monero has practical acceptance paths ranging from manual wallet payments to automated checkout, and the project identifies financial privacy as a reason merchants value it. But the available evidence does not establish a quantified 2026 increase in Monero acceptance. Treat adoption language and directory totals as leads, not a market-growth measurement; verify payment support, service terms, and merchant status directly.
