Why One Wireless Earbud Is Not Working and How to Fix It

When one wireless earbud is silent, start with the simple causes: insufficient charge, poor contact in the case, blocked speaker mesh, an incorrect left/right balance setting, or a Bluetooth and playback-routing problem. Put both earbuds in the case, verify that each one registers a charge, test a known audio source, inspect the mesh and fit, then reconnect or reset them using the instructions for the exact model. If the same earbud stays silent on more than one device after those checks, use the manufacturer’s support or service route.

First determine whether the earbud is silent or merely quieter

“One earbud is not working” can describe two different faults. A completely silent earbud usually points first to charging contact, an internal connection problem, playback routing, or hardware failure. An earbud that still produces sound but is noticeably quieter is more often affected by earbud fit, earwax or other debris on the speaker mesh, a partially blocked tip, or an audio-balance setting.

  • Totally silent: check charging status, seating in the case, Bluetooth connection, the selected audio output, and model-specific re-coupling or reset steps.
  • Quieter than the other side: check volume, left/right balance, ear-tip fit, and visible debris before resetting anything.
  • Only failing in one app, call, or computer: investigate that app’s output and the device’s Bluetooth profile before treating the earbud as defective.

Menu names differ among phones, computers, operating systems, apps, earbud generations, and companion apps. Use the labels shown on your device rather than assuming that a path from another model applies to yours.

Fix one wireless earbud in this order

The sequence below moves from low-risk checks to model-specific recovery. Stop when the sound returns; there is no benefit in resetting a working connection.

1. Check the case and both earbuds for charge

A bud can appear to be in the case while its charging contacts are not touching. Charge the case, place both earbuds in their intended slots, and make sure they sit firmly. Look for the case or companion app to show an individual charge level for the left and right earbuds. If one side does not appear at all, remove and reseat it, then inspect the contacts and the case port for visible dirt.

For AirPods, Apple’s support procedure says to charge the case, place both AirPods in it for 30 seconds, and check each AirPod’s charge status before testing the malfunctioning side. That 30-second instruction is specific to the cited AirPods guidance, not a universal charging rule. Follow the equivalent procedure for your model rather than applying the timing to another product. Apple’s AirPods support article was published September 14, 2026.

Do not infer a dead battery solely from a low or missing percentage in an app. A dirty contact, an earbud that is not fully seated, or a case that itself needs charging can prevent the percentage from updating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Confirm the earbud is seated and fitted correctly

Remove both buds and put them back in your ears using the fit recommended for that model. A loose seal can make one side seem quiet, while a mismatched or improperly attached ear tip can block the sound outlet. Samsung identifies fit, earwax or debris on the speaker mesh, and incorrectly attached tips as initial checks for Galaxy Buds. These causes also apply as general diagnostic possibilities, but the exact tip-removal and cleaning method remains model-specific.

Test with both earbuds in place. If the supposedly silent side works when you adjust its position, the issue is likely acoustic fit rather than a failed Bluetooth channel. If it remains silent regardless of position, continue to the electronic checks.

3. Check volume and left/right balance

Play a familiar song or other known audio source at a moderate volume. Open the accessibility or sound settings on the playback device and find the left/right balance control. Set the balance to the center. A slider moved fully toward one side can mute the opposite earbud even though the Bluetooth connection is healthy.

On supported Apple devices, the path is Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Balance; center the slider. Apple also directs users with uneven AirPod loudness to inspect and clean the mesh. Samsung’s support guidance includes a similar balance check, while noting that some Galaxy Buds models may not provide a balance option and that labels can change with the device, software, or companion-app version. Samsung’s Galaxy Buds support article was updated April 24, 2026.

Balance is normally a playback-device setting, so check it on every device where the symptom occurs. If the earbud is quiet only on one phone or computer, the setting on that device is a stronger suspect than the earbud itself.

4. Test a known source, another app, and another device

Use an audio file or service that normally plays in stereo. Then try a second app. If possible, pair the earbuds with another phone, tablet, or computer. This separates an earbud fault from an app, call mode, or operating-system problem.

  • If the earbud works in another app on the same device, inspect the original app’s output, volume, and call or media settings.
  • If it works on another device, troubleshoot Bluetooth profiles, output selection, and balance on the original device.
  • If it is silent everywhere, concentrate on charging, internal earbud coupling, cleaning, and the model’s reset procedure.

On a computer, explicitly select the earbuds as the audio output. A computer can remain routed to its speakers, a monitor, a headset profile, or another Bluetooth device even while the earbuds show as connected. Sony’s WF-1000XM5 guide also calls out computer output selection, app playback, Bluetooth profiles, multipoint, and Speak-to-Chat as possible explanations for an apparent loss of sound. Sony’s WF-1000XM5 Help Guide is model-specific.

5. Reseat the buds and refresh the Bluetooth connection

Put both earbuds in the case, close the lid, wait briefly, and open it again. Confirm that the phone or computer still lists the correct earbuds as the active output. If the model’s instructions require it, disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth, or remove the earbuds from the device’s saved Bluetooth list and pair them again.

Two earbuds can remain paired to the phone while losing their internal left-right connection. Some products call the recovery process re-coupling or self-coupling. The sequence differs by generation: Samsung publishes separate internal-connection procedures for different Galaxy Buds models, and Sony distinguishes pairing again from resetting or initializing. Do not apply a button hold or touch gesture from a different generation.

If one earbud was replaced, refurbished, or paired to another case, normal Bluetooth reconnection may not restore the pair. Follow the exact model’s instructions for bringing the two earbuds back into one set.

6. Check for special playback modes

Features intended to pause or redirect audio can look like a dead earbud. Temporarily disable or test around:

  • Speak-to-Chat or conversation detection: on supported Sony earbuds, this can pause or lower playback when speech is detected.
  • Multipoint: an earbud may be connected to two devices, with audio routed to the other device or profile.
  • Call and media profiles: computers may switch between a high-quality stereo profile and a hands-free call profile.
  • App-specific output: a call, meeting, game, or media app may select a different output than the system default.

Test with one connected playback device and a simple stereo track. Once both sides work, re-enable special features one at a time to identify the setting that caused the symptom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Clean only according to the product’s care instructions

Inspect the speaker mesh, ear-tip opening, and charging contacts under good light. Earwax or other debris can muffle one side without interrupting Bluetooth. Manufacturers do not share one universal cleaning method: the allowed tools, liquids, pressure, and drying time depend on the model’s construction and water-resistance rating.

Use the maintenance directions for your exact earbuds. Avoid pushing debris deeper into the mesh, flooding the speaker opening, or applying a liquid that the manufacturer does not specify. A generic wireless-earbud cleaning kit can be an optional accessory, but none of the cited manufacturers endorses a universal kit; model instructions take priority.

For AirPods, Apple specifically advises checking the mesh and cleaning debris when one side is quieter. Samsung identifies debris on the speaker mesh as a possible cause. Sony warns that earwax on the mesh can muffle sound and directs owners to its maintenance directions. These are diagnostic findings, not permission to use the same brush or solvent on every product.

8. Reset the earbuds and playback device as a final software step

Restart the phone, tablet, or computer, then use the earbud maker’s reset procedure. A reset may clear a corrupted pairing state; it is not the same as simply turning Bluetooth off and on. Some products offer separate restart, reset, and initialization actions. Initialization can erase saved pairing information or other settings, so read the model’s instructions first and be prepared to pair the earbuds again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple directs users to its AirPods reset guide if the malfunctioning AirPod remains silent after charging and cleaning. Sony lists restart, reset, and initialization separately for the WF-1000XM5. Samsung’s procedure varies by Galaxy Buds generation. Use the exact model and generation, not a generic gesture copied from a different product.

Manufacturer-specific paths

Product family Checks documented by the manufacturer Important limitation
Apple AirPods Charge the case; clean the case charging port; place both AirPods in the case for 30 seconds; check each AirPod’s charge; test the silent side; inspect and clean the mesh; center Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Balance; reset if needed. The 30-second charging step and reset process apply to the covered AirPods guidance, not every wireless-earbud model.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Check fit, ear tips, speaker-mesh debris, balance, and Bluetooth stability; use the model-generation instructions to restore the earbuds’ internal connection. Some models may not support balance, and menu names can change with device, software, or app version.
Sony WF-1000XM5 Pair again; charge the case; place both units in the case and close the lid; clean the mesh using the maintenance directions; restart the phone or computer; check output, app playback, Speak-to-Chat, multipoint, and Bluetooth profiles; reset or initialize as appropriate. The Help Guide applies to the WF-1000XM5; do not assume its controls match another Sony model.

Apple AirPods: a focused recovery sequence

Apple’s support article for a left or right AirPod that is not working starts with power and contact rather than software. Charge the case, clean its charging port if necessary, put both AirPods in the case for 30 seconds, and check that both individual charge indicators appear. Test the malfunctioning AirPod. If it remains silent, continue with Apple’s reset instructions.

When the symptom is uneven loudness rather than total silence, inspect the speaker mesh for debris and clean it using Apple’s care guidance. Then open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual and center Balance. A centered slider rules out a device-level pan but does not correct a blocked mesh or a failed driver.

The cited Apple article is dated September 14, 2026 and is available at https://support.apple.com/en-lamr/100494. The article’s charging duration should not be generalized to earbuds from another maker.

Samsung Galaxy Buds: fit, balance, and internal coupling

Samsung’s UK guidance describes one-sided sound as potentially related to earbud fit, speaker-mesh debris, sound-balance settings, or a temporary connection issue between the earbuds. Start by refitting both buds, checking that the tips are attached correctly, and inspecting the mesh. Check left/right balance in the connected device or Galaxy Buds controls where that option exists.

If the buds have lost their internal connection, use Samsung’s self-coupling instructions for the exact generation. The steps are not interchangeable across Galaxy Buds models. Samsung also notes that some models do not support balance and that software or app updates can alter menu locations. If a path in the support article does not appear on your device, identify the model and generation before trying another procedure.

Samsung’s support article, updated April 24, 2026, is at https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/what-to-do-when-sound-is-not-heard-from-one-side-of-your-samsung-galaxy-buds-series/.

Sony WF-1000XM5: rule out routing and feature interactions

Sony’s WF-1000XM5 Help Guide recommends pairing again, charging the case, placing both units in the case and closing the lid, cleaning mesh debris according to its maintenance directions, and restarting the phone or computer. It also separates ordinary reset from initialization, so read the result of each action before proceeding.

For a computer-only failure, verify the selected output and Bluetooth profile. For an app-only failure, test another app. If audio pauses or drops when you speak, test with Speak-to-Chat disabled. If the earbuds are connected to multiple devices, temporarily disconnect the second device and test multipoint again after normal stereo playback returns.

The model-specific guide is available at https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/2963/v1/en/contents/TP1000780030.html.

Use the symptom pattern to choose the next step

What you observe Most useful next check Why it matters
The earbud does not show a charge Reseat it, charge the case, and inspect the case and earbud contacts. The bud may not be receiving power, so Bluetooth troubleshooting cannot yet establish whether its speaker works.
The earbud shows charge but is silent everywhere Restore the internal pair, then perform the exact model’s reset or initialization. The fault follows the earbud across playback devices, making routing less likely.
The earbud is quieter, not silent Check balance, fit, tip attachment, and mesh debris. These can reduce one side’s acoustic output without breaking the wireless connection.
It fails only in one app Check that app’s output and test another source. The earbud hardware is probably still receiving audio from the device.
It fails only on a computer Select the earbuds as output and inspect the Bluetooth profile. Computers can route audio to speakers, monitors, another device, or a hands-free profile.
It works after moving the bud in your ear Correct the tip and fit rather than resetting first. A seal or blocked outlet can create a large volume difference.

When the problem is probably hardware

Escalate to the manufacturer’s official support or service route when the same earbud remains silent on multiple playback devices after it registers a charge, is correctly seated, has a clear mesh, and has completed the model-specific reconnection and reset process. Persistent failure after those checks is more consistent with a damaged speaker, battery, charging contact, or internal circuit than with a single app setting.

Do not assume that a replacement, repair, or warranty claim is automatically available. Eligibility, fees, regional service options, and proof-of-purchase requirements depend on the product, country, and purchase date. The cited support pages explain troubleshooting but do not establish your warranty or replacement entitlement.

Before contacting support, record the exact model and generation, which side fails, whether it shows a charge, the devices and apps tested, and the reset steps already completed. This lets the service representative skip repeated basic checks and determine whether the next action is inspection, repair, or replacement.

Preventing a repeat one-sided failure

  • Return both earbuds to their correct case slots after use so each side can charge and remain paired.
  • Keep the case charged enough to maintain contact and update charge indicators.
  • Inspect the speaker mesh and tips periodically, especially if one side gradually becomes quieter.
  • Use only the cleaning method specified for the exact model; avoid forcing tools into the mesh or charging port.
  • When using multipoint, confirm which device is the active audio source before diagnosing a hardware fault.
  • Keep the model’s official help page available, because reset, self-coupling, and initialization controls differ by generation.

Key takeaway

Start with charge and seating, then distinguish low volume from complete silence. Center balance, test another source or device, inspect fit and mesh, refresh pairing, and use only the exact model’s reset instructions. If one charged earbud remains silent across devices after those steps, stop repeating generic Bluetooth fixes and contact the manufacturer’s service channel.
