Why OBS Stops Streaming to YouTube After a Few Hours—and How to Diagnose It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OBS does not have a known fixed runtime limit that explains a stream ending after a few hours. A disconnection can instead come from an unstable connection, an encoder or application problem, or YouTube’s broadcast state. Check what OBS and YouTube recorded at the moment the stream stopped before changing settings or buying equipment.

First, identify what actually stopped

At the next interruption, record the exact time and check both OBS and YouTube Studio. OBS may have lost its connection while YouTube’s broadcast remains open, or YouTube may have stopped presenting the broadcast even though OBS still appears active. Those situations call for different fixes.

  • In OBS, note whether the stream is still active and whether the dropped-frames counter increased.
  • In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the stream-health status and any error message. YouTube says this status includes specific errors and instructions.
  • Compare the messages and timestamps with the OBS log around the failure. YouTube’s metrics interface also shows stream duration during an event.

Keep the stream-health message, OBS log, encoder settings, connection type, and broadcast settings together. Without them, there is no reliable way to identify the cause of a particular outage. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide and YouTube’s encoder settings guide explain what to check.

If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects

Dropped frames are a network clue, not proof that OBS has a runtime timer. OBS says they mean the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. OBS describes dropped frames as extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Lower the bitrate and test. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. This is a troubleshooting starting point, not a guarantee that your route to YouTube can sustain that bitrate at all times. A headline speed-test result alone does not establish stable streaming capacity.
  2. Try another available ingest server. If OBS offers another server, test it and compare the result. A change can help distinguish a route or ingest-path issue from other causes.
  3. Test VPN, security, and optimizer software. Temporarily test without a VPN and check whether firewall, antivirus, or network-optimizer software is interfering. If the test points to security software, re-enable it and configure an appropriate OBS exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
  4. Test a wired connection. Ethernet is a useful stability check when you normally use Wi-Fi. If you already use a cable, try a known-good one and inspect the router, modem, network card, and other network devices. OBS recommends contacting your ISP before replacing equipment if you are unsure.
  5. Contact your ISP if the fault persists. Share the timestamps and failure pattern. Congestion or routing changes may be outside your control; buying a cable will not fix those, VPN or firewall interference, a YouTube setting, or an encoder fault.

OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but OBS warns that it does not fix the underlying problem and can reduce stream quality. Treat it as a fallback, not a diagnosis.

Check YouTube ingest and encoder settings

YouTube recommends choosing encoder settings that produce a reliable stream, testing before the event with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health while live. For RTMP/RTMPS, its guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1; CBR; and a recommended keyframe frequency of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds.

Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. In YouTube’s current table, H.264 at 1080p/60 fps is listed at 12 Mbps, while H.264 at 720p/60 fps is listed at 6 Mbps. Those are table entries, not universal prescriptions: use the current YouTube table for your chosen format, then make sure your connection can reliably sustain the setting. Do not keep an old generic bitrate figure if YouTube’s recommendations have changed.

When Live Control Room reports that input is not arriving or is insufficient, treat that as evidence about the incoming stream. Compare it with OBS’s output, dropped-frame counter, and log before changing encoder settings or hardware. YouTube’s live encoder settings page has the codec- and format-specific table.

Review scheduled broadcast behavior

A scheduled broadcast’s Auto-stop setting affects what happens when incoming stream data stops; it does not repair a network disconnection. A community-authored OBS forum guide to scheduled streams describes Auto-stop as ending the broadcast after streaming stops, which can prevent reconnecting to that same broadcast without scheduling a new one. It also says broadcasts eventually end after multiple hours without incoming data even when Auto-stop is off.

Because this guidance is community-authored and YouTube’s interface can change, verify the current setting and wording in your YouTube Studio or OBS workflow. Disabling Auto-stop is not a cure for an unstable connection and does not promise an indefinitely open broadcast.

Change one variable at a time

Use the evidence to narrow the cause rather than making several changes at once:

  • Dropped frames rise in OBS: investigate bitrate, network stability, VPN or firewall interference, ingest server, and ISP routing.
  • YouTube reports unhealthy or missing input: compare its error with OBS output and logs, then verify encoder format and broadcast settings.
  • No dropped frames, but the broadcast ends: inspect OBS logs and YouTube broadcast behavior, including scheduled-stream settings.
  • A known-good wired connection changes the outcome: investigate Wi-Fi or the previous cable and network path; if it does not, continue with the other evidence rather than assuming the cable was the cause.

Record the timestamp and result of each test. If the outage recurs, that record gives OBS, YouTube, or your ISP something concrete to investigate.
