Why OBS Skips the First Seconds of a Video in a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist

There is no documented rule that OBS or YouTube automatically cuts the opening seconds of a 4K/60 fps live stream. First find out where the loss occurs: inside an OBS Media Source playlist, in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, or in the public stream viewers watch. Those are different playback paths, and the title alone does not identify the cause.

First identify where the opening seconds disappear

Check the recording or replay and compare it with the source file. Note whether the same seconds are missing for everyone, only in the preview, or only when a viewer joins. Also record the approximate duration lost and whether picture, audio, or both are affected.

  • OBS Media Source playlist: The video is being played inside OBS before or as part of the scene. Troubleshoot the media source and its playback configuration; YouTube’s live encoder recommendations do not establish how that source behaves.
  • Live Control Room preview: The preview may not match the moment the public broadcast begins. Check the preview and source timing before using the public Go Live control.
  • Public live stream or replay: Continue with the start workflow and stream-health checks below. Compare the source file with the resulting replay if available.
  • A viewer joining after the broadcast starts: A viewer may simply arrive after the program has begun. That is different from the broadcast itself trimming its opening.

Start the broadcast with the content already playing

For a pre-recorded video sent through OBS, have the intended content running before you make the broadcast public. The general workflow described in an older OBS guide is to start the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview, and then press Go Live; current interface details may differ. See the OBS guide to streaming to YouTube.

  1. Start the OBS stream and allow YouTube to receive the feed.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview to confirm the expected scene, video, and audio are present.
  3. Confirm the source video is already at the intended point in playback.
  4. Use YouTube’s Go Live control only when you are ready for viewers to see the broadcast.

If the source is already playing in the preview but the public replay still lacks the same opening, the issue is not resolved by assuming that the preview and public start point are identical. Compare timestamps and inspect the indicators described below.

Check OBS and YouTube stream health

Test with the same resolution, frame rate, encoder, and representative video movement you plan to use for the actual broadcast. Before going live, monitor OBS’s dropped-frame and encoding indicators and YouTube’s Live Control Room stream health. YouTube recommends testing before a live event, and OBS recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot sustain the encoding workload. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.

  • If OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, reduce output resolution or frame rate for a test and compare the resulting stream.
  • If OBS reports dropped frames, note when they occur and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. Do not assume dropped frames explain an opening trim without matching evidence.
  • If health indicators are clear but the start is still missing, preserve the OBS log, the stream-health details, and the source/replay comparison before changing multiple settings at once.

Verify 4K/60 fps settings without treating them as a proven cause

YouTube supports live ingestion up to 60 fps and lists a 4K/2160p 60 fps profile. Its current encoder recommendations include the following values; they are configuration guidance, not proof that bitrate or keyframe settings caused the missing seconds.

Setting YouTube guidance for 4K/2160p at 60 fps
H.264 bitrate 35 Mbps recommended
AV1/H.265 bitrate 10–40 Mbps listed range
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds

Check that OBS is configured for the intended output and that its keyframe interval matches YouTube’s recommendation. Make one controlled test at a lower resolution or frame rate if performance is in doubt; this is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix. OBS also notes that YouTube transcodes live streams, including the source feed, and that consistent keyframe intervals help quality-selection transitions. That describes processing and playback quality, not an inherent opening trim. See OBS information about YouTube transcoding.

Do not confuse 4K latency or HLS segment rules with a start cut

YouTube says the option to improve for low latency is unavailable for 4K/2160; 4K streams are optimized for quality and set to normal latency. That can affect the delay between transmission and viewing, but the cited guidance does not say normal latency removes the beginning of the content.

HLS is a particular ingest workflow, not something to infer just because a stream has a playlist. YouTube’s HLS guide recommends media segments of one to four seconds and describes playlist sequence behavior. Those rules do not establish that this stream uses HLS or that an HLS segment caused the reported loss. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.

Common symptoms and the next useful check

What you observe What to check next
The opening is absent in the OBS Media Source itself. Inspect that source’s playback configuration and test it independently; live encoder guidance does not diagnose media-source behavior.
The preview shows the video, but the public stream starts later. Check whether the source was already playing before the public Go Live action, then compare the public replay with the source timeline.
OBS shows encoding or rendering overload. Reduce output resolution or frame rate for a controlled test and compare stream health.
OBS shows dropped frames or YouTube reports a stream-health problem. Record the warning and its timing, then test again while monitoring both OBS and the Live Control Room.
The only difference is that a viewer sees the stream late. Distinguish viewer delay from missing content in the broadcast or replay; 4K uses normal latency under YouTube’s current guidance.
The issue remains with healthy indicators and correct settings. Keep the OBS log, stream-health messages, exact missing interval, and source-to-replay comparison. The available facts do not identify a single guaranteed fix.
