When NYT Strands will not open, keeps loading, or refuses a selection, first identify whether the failure is limited to the NYT Games app, a web browser, your account, or answer entry. Try another NYT game in the same place and, if possible, try Strands on the other platform. That comparison narrows the fault, but it does not prove that NYT Strands is experiencing an outage.
The New York Times Help Center documents fixes for app sessions and browser sign-in. It does not establish a Strands-specific answer-validation bug or publish rules saying that every word visible in the letter grid must be accepted. Use the sequence below, beginning with the lowest-risk checks, then report the exact behavior if the problem remains.

Start by locating the failure
A useful diagnosis begins with two questions: where does Strands fail, and what exactly happens? An app that never reaches the puzzle, a browser that loops at sign-in, and a puzzle that highlights letters but does not register a word are different problems. Treat the following comparisons as diagnostic checks rather than guaranteed fixes.

Many NYT Games, including Strands, can be played in a browser or through the NYT Games app, according to the NYT Games access information. A failure that follows your account across both surfaces points you toward account or service access. A failure confined to one surface is more consistent with that app or browser session, although only support can determine the underlying cause.

If the NYT Games app will not load or respond
The NYT mobile troubleshooting page explicitly applies to NYT Games. Work through its recommended session repairs in order, testing Strands after each major change.
1. Update the app and operating system
Install any available NYT Games app update from your device’s app store, then install pending operating-system updates. A current app running on an outdated operating system can behave differently from a supported, fully updated combination. Restart Strands after both updates finish. 2. Force quit, then reopen
Close the NYT Games app completely rather than merely switching away from it. Reopen it and wait for the home screen to finish loading before selecting Strands. This creates a fresh app process and can clear a temporary frozen screen or interrupted request without changing account settings.

3. Start a new account session
Use the app’s account controls to log out, close the app, reopen it, and sign back in. NYT describes logging out and back in as a way to start a new session. Enter credentials manually if autofill may be inserting an old password or a different email address. Test Strands immediately after the new session is established.

4. Clear app cache when the device provides that control
The NYT mobile guidance notes that an outdated or conflicting app cache can interfere with login attempts and says clearing mobile app cache will not affect saved Games streaks or statistics. The exact menu differs by operating system; use the device’s standard app-storage settings when a cache-only option is available. Do not confuse clearing cache with deleting all app data, which can remove local information.
5. Reinstall only after the earlier steps
If updating, restarting, and refreshing the session do not help, uninstall and reinstall the NYT Games app. The Help Center says reinstalling will not affect saved Games streaks and statistics. Before removing the app, make sure you know the email or linked sign-in method for the account that holds your progress. After reinstalling, sign in and check Strands again.
6. Report the behavior inside the app
For an unresolved technical problem, use the app’s Report a Bug or Send App Feedback route. The NYT Games app help page directs users with technical issues to mobile troubleshooting and says support is available from app settings. Include the device model, operating-system version, app version if visible, whether other games load, and the exact screen where Strands stops.
If Strands fails in a web browser
Browser problems often appear as a blank game, a sign-in loop, or a login that seems successful before returning to the same page. The NYT browser guide explicitly covers nytimes.com, including the Games area. Its steps target account access and browser state; they should not be presented as a cure for every gameplay or answer-entry issue.

Clear cache and cookies
Clear the browser’s cached files and cookies for the NYT site, then close and reopen the browser. Stale site data can conflict with a new login session. Clearing cookies signs you out of sites, so have your correct NYT credentials or linked sign-in method ready before you begin. Allow cookies
The NYT Help Center says the browser must accept cookies for access to an NYT account. Check the browser’s privacy settings and any per-site exception list, then allow cookies for the NYT domain. If you use a strict privacy mode, temporarily test in a normal window to determine whether the setting is blocking the session.
Verify the account identity
Re-enter the email address and password instead of relying on a saved form. If you have more than one email address, try the one that may have been used for the NYT account. If the account was created through Google, Facebook, or Apple, choose that linked sign-in button rather than entering a separate password. A valid password for a different account will not restore the intended Games progress.

Use the NYT password-reset flow when credentials are uncertain. If the reset message does not appear, check spam, junk, and promotions folders before requesting another message. Complete the reset, return to the Games page, and sign in with the new password. This addresses authentication; it does not confirm that a separate Strands loading or answer-selection problem has been fixed.

Test without a password-manager extension
The browser guide recommends disabling password-manager extensions when they are stale or autofill incorrect credentials. Temporarily turn the extension off, type the account details manually, and retry. If login works, update the stored entry before re-enabling autofill. Keep the test limited to the NYT site and restore your normal security settings afterward.

The official NYT pages reviewed do not publish a Strands-specific rulebook for answer acceptance and do not document a known answer-entry defect. Therefore, a word appearing among the puzzle’s letters is not, by itself, proof that the game should accept it. The letters may form many possible words while only the puzzle’s intended answers count.
Confirm what you selected
Watch the selection as you drag or tap. Make sure every intended letter is included, that the path does not skip a letter, and that you release the pointer or finger only after the complete selection is highlighted. If the interface clears the selection, note whether it clears immediately, after submission, or only when another letter is touched. Those details help support distinguish an input event from an answer decision.
Change one input method
Try a slower selection, then test a different method: touch instead of a mouse, or a mouse instead of touch. If you have access to the other platform, open Strands there and repeat the same action. These are diagnostic comparisons, not confirmed fixes. A change in behavior suggests an interaction issue on the original surface, but it does not establish the cause.
Check whether the word is an intended answer
Do not label a word as rejected merely because it can be traced through adjacent letters. Ask whether it fits the puzzle’s clues and answer set. The available Help Center material does not define every accepted word, explain all valid paths, or promise that any dictionary word in the grid will submit. If you believe the exact intended answer is being rejected, record the clue, the letters selected, and the visible response.
Compare another game and another platform
Open a different NYT game in the same browser or app. If that game’s input also fails, the issue may involve the surface or session rather than Strands’ answer handling. If other games work and Strands alone fails, report that distinction; it is useful evidence, but it still does not prove a Strands-wide bug or outage.
Send a precise report
When the problem persists, contact NYT support through the app feedback route or the relevant Help Center support path. Describe the platform, account state, puzzle date if known, exact letter sequence, whether the selection highlighted, and what happened after release. A screen recording or screenshot can show the behavior without requiring you to guess at its cause.

Understand sign-in and missing progress
Account status matters when you move between the app and browser or between devices. NYT says signing in saves game progress to the account and enables access across devices. If you play while signed out, progress is stored locally on that device and may be lost. This explains why a puzzle can appear unfinished after switching surfaces even when Strands itself loads normally.
Before troubleshooting on a second device, identify the account currently signed in on the first one. Use the same email or linked social-login method on both surfaces. If you reinstall the app, sign back into that account before judging whether progress has disappeared. Saved streaks and statistics are covered by the mobile troubleshooting guidance, while unsigned local progress remains dependent on the original device.
A practical order of operations
- Classify the symptom. Decide whether Strands is stuck loading, blocked at sign-in, or accepting letter selections without registering an answer.
- Compare scope. Try another NYT game in the same place and, when practical, try Strands on the other platform.
- Repair the failing surface. In the app, update the app and operating system, force quit and reopen, log out and back in, then consider reinstalling. In a browser, clear cache and cookies, allow cookies, verify credentials or linked login, reset the password if needed, and test without a password manager.
- Re-test answer entry. Select letters slowly, try the alternate input method, and verify that the word is an intended puzzle answer rather than merely a possible word in the grid.
- Protect continuity. Sign in before changing devices so progress can follow the account; remember that unsigned progress is local.
- Escalate with evidence. Report the exact sequence, platform, account state, and visible result through NYT support instead of assuming an outage or a validation defect.
What these checks can and cannot establish
Clearing browser data can resolve a login conflict, and refreshing an app session can remove a temporary state problem, but neither step proves why a particular Strands puzzle failed. Likewise, a successful attempt with a mouse instead of touch indicates only that the two interactions behaved differently. The Help Center material does not provide a prevalence statistic, identify a specific Strands outage, or name a physical product that fixes loading or answer acceptance.
Use the comparisons to supply better information to support: which surface failed, whether the account followed you, whether other games worked, whether letters highlighted, and what happened after submission. That evidence is more useful than repeatedly guessing words or reinstalling unrelated software.
