How you earn a hint
Find three words outside the theme
Start by searching the board for words that fit the game’s word list but do not belong to the day’s hidden category. The documented requirement is three valid non-theme words, and the independent explanations specify that these bonus words must contain at least four letters. They are often called bonus words because they help you progress without being theme answers.
The theme clue is your only printed thematic guidance; there is no visible bank of answers to choose from. You test possible paths on the grid, submit a word, and the game decides whether it is accepted. Only accepted words that are outside the theme contribute to the hint trigger described by the sources.
Why the trigger uses bonus words
The requirement makes the hint something you earn through exploration rather than a control that immediately gives away a solution. Strands Today, an independent fan site unaffiliated with The New York Times, describes the reveal as progressive: letters appear one at a time. That lets you stop when you recognize the answer instead of waiting for every possible cue. The sources do not establish a fixed number of taps, a universal animation duration, or a single interface label for the control, so those details can vary without changing the underlying rule.
Recognition and tracing remain your job
The staged reveal is why a hint may not look like an answer. It directs your attention to a set of cells and gives you enough structure to infer a word, but you still need to identify the word and select its complete path. The spangram is a separate puzzle element. The 2026 conference paper Man, These New York Times Games Are Hard! A Computational Perspective describes it as a word or phrase that connects opposite sides of the matrix and explicitly reveals the day’s theme. Strands Today’s explanation says the ordinary hint targets theme words, not the spangram and not the theme clue itself.
Why the board matters to the hint design
Strands is a path-based word search, so seeing letters is only useful if you understand how a legal path works. A word can move to any of the eight neighboring cells: horizontally, vertically or diagonally. The path may turn as it travels. A cell cannot be used twice within the same word.

Those rules explain the in-grid highlight. A text-only clue would tell you what the letters are but not how they connect. By marking the cells in place, the hint shows both the candidate letters and the area of the board you need to trace. You still have to follow adjacent cells in order and avoid repeating a tile.

Imagine that the theme clue suggests a category and the hint illuminates four separated-looking cells. The cells may not form a straight line: one could connect diagonally, turn through a neighboring tile and continue horizontally. Treat the highlighted cells as a route, not as a list. Look for a legal sequence through adjacent cells, then submit that complete word. This example illustrates the board rule without revealing a daily answer.
What using a hint does to your statistics
Strands Today reports that using any hint changes the puzzle’s “solved without hints” statistic. The same report says a hint does not end the daily streak and does not change the puzzle count. Because this information comes from an independent fan site rather than a directly verified official rules statement, treat it as a description of the site’s understanding of the game, not a guaranteed New York Times policy for every future version.
If preserving a no-hint statistic matters to you, consider the decision before activating the control. If your priority is keeping the daily run alive, the independent report indicates that a hint does not break the streak. How to use a hint without spoiling the puzzle
- Open the puzzle. Use the official Strands game at https://www.nytimes.com/games/strands and read the day’s theme clue before searching.
- Search for legal paths. Connect neighboring letters horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Turns are allowed, but do not reuse a cell in one word.
- Submit words that are not theme answers. Continue until the game has accepted three non-theme words of at least four letters. Rejected guesses do not satisfy the documented requirement.
- Activate the available hint. Use the hint control presented by the current game interface. The target is an unfound theme word, not the spangram.
- Watch the highlighted cells. The reveal is progressive. Pause as soon as the emerging letters and their locations suggest a word.

- Continue independently if you can. Once the word is recognized, stop relying on further visual help and return to the clue and remaining grid.
The exact on-screen animation or wording of the control is not fixed by the sources. The stable part of the procedure is the three accepted bonus words followed by a partial, in-grid reveal.

- Re-read the theme clue. Ask what kinds of objects, names or phrases could belong to the category.
- Search by thematic direction. Scan for likely fragments while remembering that valid paths can turn and move diagonally.
- Use the earned hint. Let the highlighted cells narrow the search without waiting for every letter to appear.
- Trace only what you understand. Once the word is recognizable, submit it and preserve the remaining uncertainty for your own solving.

“I found three words, but no hint appeared.”

They do not need to be. Diagonal moves and turns are legal, provided every consecutive cell is adjacent and no cell is reused within that word.
“Why can I see letters but not read the answer?”
