Why are today’s Connections answers different?
The most common cause is a date or time-zone mismatch. A new Connections puzzle appears at midnight in each time zone. Someone who has crossed midnight may be seeing the next board while another player is still on the previous day’s puzzle. Search results and social posts can also label a board “today” even though they were published in a different region.
Match both the date and the puzzle number
- Look at the date shown in the game or app.
- Record the puzzle number displayed by the game, if available.
- Open the answer page and check that its date and number are identical.
- If either value differs, stop comparing category names; you are looking at different puzzles.
A date alone is not always enough when pages are updated around the daily reset. The number is a second identifier that helps expose a stale or regionally mislabelled page. Write the date in full, including the year, because an old page can rank for the same month and day in a later search.

Why “today” is especially unreliable near midnight
Near the reset, browser caches, scheduled posts and time-zone conversions can all produce a short period in which different pages use different dates. A page written before your local midnight may still be correct for its author’s board. Treat the calendar date and puzzle number as factual identifiers, not as labels inferred from a search snippet.
If a friend sends only a category list, ask for the board date, number and starting words. “Today’s blue group” is not enough information to reproduce a puzzle across regions. The same caution applies to screenshots cropped so tightly that the date or number is missing.
Why is my Connections answer marked wrong when the group makes sense?
Connections is designed to make an attractive theory fail. The game can test synonymy, category membership, associative links, word form, spelling, sound, multiword expressions and alternate meanings. A group that is coherent in ordinary conversation may not be the group selected by the puzzle’s constructor.

Connections can use several kinds of word knowledge
- Meaning: synonyms or words that share a semantic property.
- Category: members of a named class, profession, place or object type.
- Association: words linked by a familiar context rather than strict definition.
- Word form: a shared grammatical or morphological pattern.
- Spelling: a letter pattern or abbreviation embedded in otherwise unrelated words.
- Sound: homophones or near-homophones.
- Phrase completion: words that can precede or follow the same expression.
- Alternate sense: a less obvious definition of a common word.
A peer-reviewed study of Connections found that most examined instances relied on semantic relations, while also documenting word-form and associative phenomena. That means a difficult group is not automatically a pun or a homophone; it may be a conventional meaning that is simply less prominent than the distractor’s meaning.
How distractors create a convincing but invalid group
Each board contains sixteen words divided into four sets of four. A word can appear to fit more than one theory. The constructor may place three strong members of a category beside a fourth word that fits only through a different sense, then use the remaining words to support another, intended set. Selecting the first “good enough” group can therefore remove a word needed by a stronger relationship elsewhere.
When a group is rejected, do not assume the game is judging your broad idea rather than the exact words. The intended connection must apply consistently to all four entries. A category that needs one word to be a noun, another to be a verb and a third to be a sound-alike may be less precise than it initially appears.

A practical test for a suspected group
- State the connection in one precise sentence, not merely “these feel related.”
- Check whether all four words satisfy that sentence in the same way.
- Ask whether one word is being used in an unusual sense while the other three use ordinary meanings.
- Look for a competing group that becomes exact if one of your words is moved.
- Test spelling, sound and phrase-completion possibilities before concluding that the key is wrong.
If a category works only after changing its rule for one member, it is probably a distractor. Conversely, an unusual-looking set may be intended if the same rule applies consistently to all four words. Also check whether a proposed phrase is genuinely established rather than a sentence you can invent on the spot.
What to do when an answer page disagrees with your board
Use this sequence before treating either source as erroneous.
- Match the date and number. Check the game’s displayed date and puzzle number against the answer page. Account for your local time zone and the midnight reset.
- Compare the board, not just the headline. Verify the complete list of 16 starting words and the four reported groups. Headlines, search snippets and recycled summaries can refer to another date. A dated solution page is useful as a cross-check, but a page that omits the board cannot establish that it solved your puzzle.
- Re-examine the disputed set. Decide whether the proposed link is based on meaning, association, spelling, sound, a phrase, word form or an alternate definition. Try moving each word through the competing sets.
- Check archive coverage and timing. Confirm that the requested date exists in that particular archive. A missing page may mean the publisher has not posted it yet, the archive never captured it, or its data contains a gap.
- Use official support for app problems. If the board itself will not load or an archive entry is inaccessible in the app, open the Games tab and follow the Help Center’s Games or Mobile App Troubleshooting instructions.
Save a screenshot or copy the starting board before refreshing. A daily page can be edited after publication, and a search result may show an outdated title even after the underlying answer has changed. When a discrepancy matters, compare two dated pages that display the same sixteen words rather than comparing category labels alone.
Why can’t I find yesterday’s Connections puzzle?
A missing historical page is not proof that the puzzle was missing from NYT. Third-party archives have their own publication schedules, scraping limits and storage errors. A page may also be unavailable because your “yesterday” is another region’s current or future board.
Distinguish three different situations
- Not yet published: the puzzle has appeared for some time zones but the answer page is scheduled for a later reset.
- Archive coverage gap: the publisher did not create or retain a page for that date.
- Capture or parsing error: a page exists in the source data but was saved incompletely or marked with an internal placeholder.
One third-party archive analysis reported seven saved days labelled “UNDEFINED” and excluded them from its totals. That is evidence about that archive’s dataset, not about NYT’s official puzzle history.

These figures can help you understand why an archive may have a hole, but they cannot certify that every historical answer is complete or official. A count from one archive should never be treated as a count of all puzzles NYT has published.

Is this Connections answer page official?
Check the page’s source statement. Answers.Today explicitly describes itself as independent and not affiliated with NYT. Its statement that answers are checked manually is the publisher’s own assurance, not an NYT certification. The same principle applies to other answer pages: a careful explanation can still be a third-party interpretation.
Five checks for comparing answer pages

When two independent pages disagree, compare their starting boards first. If the boards match, inspect the rule each page gives for the disputed set and test it against every word. If the boards do not match, the disagreement is administrative rather than a disagreement about the solution.
A page that links to the official game is easier to audit, but a link does not make its answer key official. Treat labels such as “verified” or “hand-checked” as claims by that publisher unless the page identifies an NYT source.
Why is Connections missing in the NYT Games app?
An app-access problem is separate from an answer-key problem. NYT’s Help Center says players reach games and archives through the Games tab, while access can vary by subscription. It also identifies some features as app-only and says Games app leaderboards track Connections matches.
App troubleshooting path
- Open the NYT Games app and select the Games tab.
- Check whether Connections appears in the current games list and whether the archive control is visible.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account whose subscription or access level you intend to use.
- Close and reopen the app, then install any pending app update supplied by your device’s app store.
- If the game or archive still fails to load, follow the Help Center’s Mobile App Troubleshooting route and submit the requested device and account details.
A missing archive entry in the app does not show that an answer page is wrong. It may reflect account access, an app-only feature, a temporary loading issue or the fact that the particular historical date is not present in the available archive.
The Help Center documents access differences, but it does not establish that a subscription is required for every Connections board or that every historical solution is available in one complete official list. Check the account and current Help Center instructions rather than relying on an answer site’s paywall warning.

What the official archive documentation does—and does not—establish
Current Help Center documentation confirms general Games-tab and archive navigation, but it does not establish that every past Connections puzzle has a complete official answer archive. Access rules can also differ between subscribers and non-subscribers.

An EMNLP 2024 paper said NYT did not maintain a Connections puzzle archive when its researchers collected their dataset. That statement describes the situation at the time of collection; it cannot prove what NYT offers in 2026. Use the current Help Center for present navigation and treat older academic descriptions as historical context.
A dated example of why page structure matters
TechRadar’s October 12, 2026 solution page identifies game number 1219, displays the board, gives staged group hints and then labels the final groups. Its explanation includes a group based on US postal-abbreviation wordplay and notes the author’s non-US perspective. This illustrates how a page can expose its assumptions and let readers check the board before reading the final answer; it does not make that page an official NYT answer key.
The example also shows why regional knowledge matters. An abbreviation that feels obvious to a US reader may be obscure elsewhere, while a non-US reader may reasonably question the category. That is a reason to inspect the exact rule and all four words, not evidence that the answer is automatically incorrect.
How to document a disputed puzzle

- The four groups you attempted and the game’s feedback.
- The answer page’s date, number and stated source status.
- Your app version, device type and account-access status if the issue is technical.
Sharing this set of details avoids the unresolvable question “What were today’s answers?” and turns it into a checkable comparison. If you contact support, describe whether the problem is a board-loading failure, an archive-navigation failure or a disagreement with an external answer key; those are different problems.
The bottom line on wrong or missing Connections answers
Start with identity, not interpretation: date, time zone and puzzle number. Then compare the complete board and test the proposed relationship across meaning, association, form, spelling, sound and phrase use. Treat third-party pages as independent records, check whether an archive actually covers the date, and use the Games tab and Help Center troubleshooting for app access.
