Why NYT Connections Answers Can Feel Ambiguous—and How to Check Your Groups

NYT Connections is supposed to make a wrong group look right. The New York Times says every board has one solution, yet its words may appear to fit multiple categories. That tension is the puzzle’s central misdirection, not evidence that the published answer is unclear.

Before you submit four tiles, test the proposed rule against all four words and then account for the other 12 tiles as three complete groups. A connection that explains only part of the board is usually a decoy or an incomplete reading of the clue.

What “ambiguous” means in Connections

A Connections board contains 16 words that must be divided into four groups of four. Each group has one intended relationship, and the New York Times Help Center says the puzzle has one solution. At the same time, the Help Center warns that words can “could fit into multiple categories,” which matches the feeling many players have when two or more sets seem plausible.

Those statements are compatible. A tile can have several reasonable associations, but only one arrangement should explain the entire 16-word board. The apparent ambiguity is created locally: four words may share a familiar meaning, appear in the same phrase, or follow a similar spelling pattern. The correct answer is determined globally, by whether all four groups work together.

The official rules and the game’s overlapping-category design are described by the NYT Help Center. A 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics paper describes the same kind of trap: a plausible grouping can leave a remainder that cannot be divided into valid groups. That is why the most useful question is not “Can these four words be connected?” but “Does this connection produce a complete solution?”

Why a wrong group can feel convincing

One word can carry several meanings

Connections tiles are ordinary words rather than tightly defined technical terms. A word may be a person, an object, a verb, a proper name, or part of a familiar expression. Your first interpretation can therefore pull a tile toward a category that is valid in isolation but not intended on that day’s board.

For example, a tile might describe an action in one context and an item in another. Four such tiles can appear to form a clean semantic set even though one of them is needed for a different, more specific pattern. The puzzle exploits that split-second commitment.

Decoys use real relationships

A decoy is not necessarily nonsense. It often consists of four words that genuinely share a broad property, such as being associated with a sport, appearing before a common noun, or naming something found in a particular place. The problem is that the relationship is too broad, overlaps another intended group, or leaves an impossible remainder.

Broad categories are especially persuasive because they are easy to state. “Things related to travel” may fit several tiles, but it does not tell you why those exact four belong together or why the other travel-related words do not. The intended category is usually narrower and more reproducible.

The board encourages premature commitment

Once you notice a possible set, the four tiles can become mentally “claimed.” You then interpret the remaining words around that decision, a form of confirmation bias. Connections counters this by requiring repeated reconsideration: a group is not secure until the other 12 tiles also organize into three groups of four.

Wordplay can hide behind ordinary meanings

Not every relationship is a straightforward topic. Spelling, pronunciation, prefixes, suffixes, abbreviations, or the way a word changes when paired with another word can matter. This is particularly common in the hardest category. Wyna Liu, a Connections editor, told The Atlantic in 2024, “Purple is the wordplay category.” That is a useful expectation, not a promise that every purple group uses one fixed trick.

Because the exact mechanism is not announced before you solve the board, a literal interpretation can look stronger than a word-based one. When the semantic categories are nearly complete but one group refuses to settle, inspect letters and word forms rather than assuming the board is faulty.

What the colors tell you—and what they do not

The New York Times assigns each group a color that indicates relative difficulty. The Help Center describes yellow as easiest and purple as trickiest. Colors are a solving aid, not a definition of the category.

Color Official difficulty guidance How to use that information
Yellow Easiest group Look for the most direct, familiar relationship, but still verify all four tiles.
Green Intermediate difficulty Expect a more specific connection than the obvious yellow set.
Blue More difficult Check alternate meanings, phrases, and less literal associations.
Purple Trickiest group Consider spelling and other wordplay; Liu calls purple “the wordplay category.”

The color does not guarantee a particular theme, grammar pattern, or construction. It also does not prove that a group is correct merely because it feels like the color you expected. Use the colors to set expectations, then rely on the four-word rule and the remaining-board test.

How to check a proposed group before submitting

The following process turns a hunch into a testable claim. The “remaining 12” step is a practical deduction from the game’s four-groups-of-four structure and one-solution premise. It is not presented as a separately published NYT strategy rule.

  1. State the category in one short phrase. Write or say a rule that could be applied consistently, such as “words that precede the same noun” or “terms formed by adding a particular letter.” If you need a paragraph of exceptions, the category is probably too loose.
  2. Apply exactly that rule to all four tiles. Do not let the first two words establish one relationship and the last two rely on another. Each tile should pass the same test. A group is stronger when the explanation sounds uniform rather than improvised.
  3. Check the word’s intended form. Ask whether the connection depends on a noun, verb, adjective, plural, abbreviation, sound, spelling, or proper-name reading. If one tile works only after an unannounced change of form, mark the set as provisional.
  4. List plausible alternatives. For every tile, identify at least one other meaning or phrase it could support. This prevents you from treating a broad association as exclusive. You do not need to solve the alternative immediately; you only need to know that the tile is not “owned” yet.
  5. Remove the four tiles mentally and inspect the other 12. Can those words be divided into three sets of four, each with a concise rule? If the proposed group strands a tile, creates a category of only three, or forces several unrelated exceptions, reject or revise it.
  6. Look for a tighter competing group. A narrower rule that explains four words cleanly is usually preferable to a broad rule that explains five or six words loosely. When two candidate sets overlap, compare the quality of the leftovers, not just the appeal of the original set.
  7. Test wordplay when meaning stalls. Examine repeated letters, prefixes, suffixes, homophones, abbreviations, and common compounds. This is especially valuable when considering the purple group, while remembering that purple is a difficulty signal rather than a full taxonomy.
  8. Submit only after the complete partition works. The goal is four groups of four, not one impressive-looking quartet. If you cannot explain the other 12, keep the candidate unsubmitted and continue searching.

The remaining-12 test in practice

Suppose four tiles appear to share a topic. Do not ask only whether the topic is true. Remove those tiles from your mental board and classify what remains. There are three useful outcomes:

  • Three clean groups of four: Your candidate is supported by the board’s structure, although you should still check for a more precise interpretation.
  • Two clean groups and four stragglers: The candidate may be a decoy, or one of the apparent groups may use the wrong meaning of a tile.
  • A group of three plus unrelated leftovers: The original set is probably incomplete or incorrect. Reconsider the tile that required the most explanation.

This test is powerful because it checks opportunity cost. Every tile placed in one group is unavailable to the other three. A broad association can look excellent until it consumes a word needed to complete a more exact category elsewhere.

Prefer rules that account for all four equally

Imagine a proposed set in which three tiles fit a phrase naturally but the fourth fits only because it is vaguely related to the topic. That fourth tile is a warning sign. The intended group normally has a single rule that can be demonstrated for each member without changing the standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse familiarity with precision. A common topic may feel better than an unusual wordplay rule, but the unusual rule can be correct if it partitions the whole board and the broad topic cannot.

Use exclusion as evidence, not proof

If one interpretation leaves a coherent set of 12 and another leaves chaos, the first is better supported. It is still possible to overlook a second meaning, so verify the wording of every group before submitting. The complete board is the deciding evidence.

Semantic connections versus wordplay connections

Semantic categories

Semantic groups connect words by what they mean or what they refer to. They may be people, places, actions, objects, genres, or members of a recognizable class. To test one, define the class narrowly enough that all four tiles belong and near-miss tiles do not.

Ask whether the category is based on a shared definition or merely a shared association. “Can be seen at a stadium” is broad; a more exact category would identify the same type of thing or the same role. The narrower explanation is easier to defend against an overlapping decoy.

Phrase and collocation groups

Some groups depend on words that can precede or follow the same term, or that commonly appear in a fixed expression. Say the complete phrase aloud or write it down. If the phrase is obscure for one tile but ordinary for the others, check whether you are using the intended word sense.

Phrase groups can feel ambiguous because a tile may pair naturally with several words. The board test matters more than how familiar one pairing sounds.

Orthographic and phonetic groups

Wordplay may use letters, sounds, abbreviations, or changes in spelling rather than meaning. Check whether the four tiles share a visible pattern, become something recognizable after a consistent edit, or sound like another set of words. Apply the same operation to every tile; a different operation for each item is not a category.

Pronunciation-based ideas deserve an extra check because accents and regional usage can vary. If a sound-alike reading is required, make sure the resulting pattern is consistent and that the remaining board confirms it.

Fix: Narrow the rule or release the tile that fits least naturally. Search for a category that explains the same words with fewer exceptions, then rerun the remaining-12 test.

Protecting a favorite group

Symptom: You keep rearranging the other words to preserve an early discovery.

Fix: Temporarily unclaim all four tiles. Solve the rest as if the group did not exist. If the remaining board forms a stronger partition without them, your original set was probably a decoy.

Assuming every category is literal

Symptom: Three groups seem semantic and the last four appear impossible.

Fix: Inspect spelling, sounds, abbreviations, and phrase structure. The difficult group may be wordplay, consistent with Liu’s description of purple.

Assuming purple has one fixed trick

Symptom: You search for a familiar purple construction and reject alternatives.

Fix: Treat “wordplay” as a broad expectation, not a guaranteed mechanism. Test the actual letters and forms on the board and require one rule for all four tiles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reading too much into the color

Symptom: You choose a group because it “looks yellow” or avoid one because it seems too easy for purple.

Fix: Use color only as a difficulty hint. The Help Center’s color guidance does not identify the exact theme or construction.

Relying on visual adjacency

Symptom: Tiles that sit near one another seem connected.

Fix: Rearrange the board with the available shuffle control, if your current interface provides it. Changing the visual order can reduce accidental clusters. Because the interface may change, follow the control shown in your version rather than relying on a fixed location.

A compact pre-submit checklist

  • Can I name the category in one concise phrase?
  • Does exactly the same rule explain all four tiles?
  • Have I checked alternate meanings and word forms?
  • Could one of these tiles belong to a tighter competing category?
  • Do the other 12 tiles divide into three defensible groups of four?
  • Am I relying on a broad association, a one-off exception, or visual placement?
  • If this is likely the hardest group, have I checked spelling, sound, and phrase-level wordplay?

If any answer is no, keep the group provisional. The cost of waiting is usually lower than committing a life and forcing the rest of the board into an arrangement that cannot work.

What a complete solution should feel like

A correct solve does not require every category to be immediately obvious. One group may be direct, another more specialized, and another dependent on wordplay. What distinguishes the intended solution is that each group has a repeatable explanation and that all 16 tiles are used exactly once.

That standard also explains why a puzzle can feel fair after the reveal even when the first guess was persuasive. The decoy used a real association, but the complete partition supplied the missing constraint. Connections is testing whether you can hold several interpretations open long enough to compare their consequences across the whole board.

For the formal rules, color descriptions, and current game features, consult the New York Times Help Center. For discussion of the puzzle’s misdirection and the editor’s description of purple, see The Atlantic’s 2024 interview with Wyna Liu. The broader classification and remainder problem are analyzed in the 2025 ACL paper on NYT-Connections.
