Nobuo Uematsu reportedly called most songs on the original Final Fantasy VII soundtrack “boring” compared with earlier entries—but the remark was a description of his own artistic choice, not a claim that listeners dislike the music. As quoted by GamesRadar+ from James Mielke’s biography, Uematsu said he wanted the score to support the game rather than pull attention away from its story and gameplay.

GamesRadar+ reported on October 7, 2026, that Uematsu compared most of the original Final Fantasy VII’s songs unfavorably with music in prior games. The report reproduces his assessment: “Apart from the fan favorites, like ‘One-Winged Angel’, most of Final Fantasy 7’s songs are boring compared to the music in prior games.”

That wording is a retrospective aesthetic comparison by the composer. It does not establish that players generally find the score boring, nor does it mean every track was deliberately subdued. The report identifies “One-Winged Angel” as an exception among fan favorites.

The explanation reported alongside the judgment changes its meaning. Uematsu is quoted as saying: “Because of the improvements in the visuals, the music distracts from the gameplay if the melody is too catchy.” He continues: “So I wrote music that doesn’t impose on the focus for the story.”

In other words, his reported rationale was restraint: as the visuals improved, he believed a highly catchy melody could compete for the player’s attention. “Boring” describes how he felt the music compared with earlier scores; it was not presented as a production failure or a verdict on the game’s soundtrack as a whole.
Where the quotation comes from
GamesRadar+ attributes the remarks to Nobuo Uematsu: On the Record, a biography by veteran game journalist James Mielke. The official VIZ Media listing describes the book as drawing on conversations with Uematsu, his wife, peers, and industry figures, and offers a preview. Simon & Schuster’s listing identifies the hardcover as 286 pages, ISBN 9781974769407, with a September 15, 2026 publication date.

Uematsu’s later Final Fantasy VII-related credits
Uematsu continued to contribute to music connected with the series. Square Enix credits him with writing “Hollow,” the theme for Final Fantasy VII Remake, performed by Yosh. PlayStation’s March 14, 2024 interview identifies him as the composer of “No Promises to Keep” for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, performed by Loren Allred.

Those are specific credited songs, not evidence that Uematsu composed every piece in either later game’s score. They also do not prove or disprove his retrospective view of the original soundtrack.
