Why NKE, NIO and APP Stocks Fell to 52-Week Lows in the Week Ended October 2, 2026

NKE, NIO and APP had different reported catalysts for their declines in the U.S. trading week that ended Friday, October 2, 2026: Nike’s weaker full-year outlook, concerns cited about NIO’s competition and cash needs, and a reported legal setback for AppLovin in its dispute with Unity. The available evidence does not point to one event behind all three moves, and a 52-week low describes a stock’s price range—not whether it is undervalued.

What drove Nike (NKE) lower?

Nike’s fiscal first-quarter 2027 results showed a mixed quarter, but investors focused on the company’s outlook. In its October 1, 2026 results release, Nike reported revenue of $11.2 billion, down 4% year over year on a reported basis and 5% on a currency-neutral basis. NIKE Brand revenue also declined 4%. Growth in North America was partly offset by declines in Greater China and EMEA.

There were positive figures in the report: gross margin rose 60 basis points to 42.8%, and diluted earnings per share were $0.48. But Nike expected fiscal 2027 revenue to decline at a high-single-digit rate and forecast adjusted diluted EPS of $1.15 to $1.35. Kiplinger reported that the full-year earnings outlook fell short of analysts’ expectations and described Nike as the Dow’s worst-performing stock on October 2. That is a characterization of the market reaction; Nike’s release supplies the underlying results and guidance.

Nike also said it was repositioning NIKE Sportswear, Jordan Brand and Greater China, and announced its Pace operating-model transformation. CEO Elliott Hill said the company had introduced Pace to help scale momentum in its performance business. The release’s operating changes and results provide context, but the weak forward outlook was the clearest reported concern for investors.

Why did NIO (NIO) come under pressure?

Contemporaneous coverage cited concerns about competition in China’s electric-vehicle market and NIO’s cash burn. These are reported investor concerns, not a company-confirmed explanation for the stock’s specific weekly low.

NIO’s latest company results located for this period, its second quarter of 2026, complicate a simple story of worsening vehicle economics. The company reported vehicle sales growth of 80.1% year over year and a vehicle margin of 18.5%, up from 10.3% in the second quarter of 2025. Those figures describe the quarter’s operating performance; they do not by themselves settle concerns about competitive pricing or cash requirements, or establish why the shares fell in a particular session.

What was the reported catalyst for AppLovin (APP)?

An October 4, 2026 Yahoo Finance report said AppLovin shares reached a reported 52-week low of $266.84 after a federal judge in San Francisco rejected the company’s request for temporary court protections against Unity Software. The report presented the court development as a catalyst investors weighed amid AppLovin’s dispute with Unity.

This account is based on that contemporaneous reporting; the underlying court order was not independently reviewed here. The reported setback should therefore be understood as a legal uncertainty investors were assessing, not as a broader conclusion about the case’s eventual outcome or AppLovin’s advertising business.

Why these declines should not be treated as one story

The three companies faced different kinds of risk: Nike’s revenue mix and fiscal-year guidance, NIO’s vehicle economics amid competitive pricing and cash concerns, and AppLovin’s legal uncertainty. They are not directly comparable company fundamentals. The contemporaneous account links each stock to a separate catalyst rather than identifying a single macro event that explains all three declines.

A 52-week low is a historical price-range observation. On its own, it does not show that a stock is cheap, that its business outlook has worsened by a particular amount, or that a rebound is likely. The reported catalysts help explain what investors were weighing; they do not establish what the shares will do next.
