It does not necessarily mean the game is unavailable everywhere. The correct fix is to identify the matchup, determine whether it is local, national, out-of-market, preseason or postseason, and then use the broadcaster or package assigned to that category.
This guide reflects the 2026-season viewing rules described by NFL, Google and YouTube TV help pages reviewed on October 13, 2026. Rights and availability can change by season, game and location, so confirm the listing for your ZIP code before kickoff.

What an NFL streaming blackout actually means
NFL distribution is divided by broadcast rights. A network, platform or subscription package may be authorized to show one class of games but not another. The same game can therefore be visible in one app, unavailable in a second app and replaced by a blackout notice in a third.

Three variables control the result:
- The matchup and broadcast category: local Sunday-afternoon, national, out-of-market Sunday-afternoon, Thursday night, preseason or postseason.
- Your current viewing market: services use the location where you are watching, not simply the address on your billing account.
- The product and device: a subscription may include a game on television, on a phone or as audio while excluding another screen or format.
A blackout message is therefore a rights and eligibility signal. It is not a reliable indication that the league has canceled the game or that no legal stream exists.

First identify the game category
Before changing apps or reinstalling anything, classify the exact game. The category determines which service can legally carry it.
Local Sunday-afternoon game
Your local CBS or FOX affiliate may carry the game over the air and through an authorized local-network stream. A subscription aimed at out-of-market games normally will not override that local assignment. Check the local listing for the ZIP code where you are physically watching.
National broadcast
National windows, such as Sunday Night Football, are distributed separately from local Sunday-afternoon games. A service that carries local CBS or FOX games is not automatically entitled to every national broadcast.

Out-of-market Sunday-afternoon game
This is a regular-season Sunday-afternoon game on CBS or FOX that is not being shown in your local market. NFL Sunday Ticket is the package designed for this category. It is not a general pass for every NFL game.
Thursday Night Football
The 2026 YouTube viewing guide identifies Amazon Prime Video for Thursday Night Football and says the game is not available on YouTube TV. Opening YouTube TV for this matchup can therefore produce an apparent blackout even when the game is available through its assigned platform.
Preseason or postseason
Preseason and postseason rights follow different schedules from regular-season Sunday-afternoon rights. Do not assume a package that covers regular-season out-of-market games includes either type.
Use this rights map to choose the right route
| What you want to watch | Route identified in the official guides | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| Local or national game carried by an available network | YouTube TV Main or Sports plan, with the local and national channels listed for your area | Availability follows your market and the broadcaster assigned to that matchup. |
| Regular-season Sunday-afternoon CBS or FOX game outside your local market | NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube TV or as a YouTube Primetime Channel | It excludes locally televised games, national broadcasts, preseason, postseason and certain select or digital-exclusive games. |
| Live local or primetime regular-season or postseason video on a mobile device | NFL+ on a phone or tablet | It is not the live out-of-market Sunday-afternoon solution; television viewing and casting restrictions can apply. |
| Live game audio | NFL+ audio on supported devices | Audio does not provide the live video broadcast. |
| Local CBS game without YouTube TV | Paramount+ | Confirm that the exact game is available locally in your market. |
| Local FOX game without YouTube TV | FOX One | Confirm the station and matchup for your location. |
| Sunday Night Football or a local NBC game | Peacock | Check the local NBC assignment and the specific game listing. |
| Thursday Night Football | Amazon Prime Video | This route applies to the Thursday-night broadcast, not to another game that is blacked out elsewhere. |
How to diagnose a blackout in minutes
- Write down the exact matchup and kickoff window. Include the teams, date and whether it is Sunday afternoon, Sunday night, Thursday night or another window.
- Look up the local listing for your current ZIP code. Use the NFL Ways to Watch lookup and the local game guide. YouTube also publishes CBS and FOX availability by area.
- Identify the assigned broadcaster. A local CBS, FOX or NBC listing points you toward that network’s authorized service; a Thursday-night listing points to Amazon Prime Video.
- Compare the game with your package’s inclusions. If it is a non-local Sunday-afternoon CBS or FOX game, Sunday Ticket may fit. If it is local, national, preseason or postseason, that package is not the remedy.
- Check your physical viewing location. A move, hotel stay, second home or travel day can put you in a different local market. YouTube TV can change the games shown when the current area changes.
- Check the device requirement. NFL+ mobile video is intended for phones and tablets, while its audio offering works on supported devices. A television app or casting attempt may not be authorized for the same feed.
- Confirm the account. Sign in with the account that purchased the relevant subscription. A missing game or a “Get NFL Sunday Ticket” prompt can indicate that another Google account is active.
- Open the official game listing again immediately before kickoff. Rights and local assignments are game-specific, so a previous week’s result is not a reliable guide.
What to do for each common blackout case
“My local game is blacked out on NFL+”
NFL+ does not function as a universal television replacement. Its live local and primetime regular-season and postseason video is offered on a phone or tablet, while live out-of-market Sunday-afternoon video is not included. If you are trying to watch a local game on a television, start with the local CBS, FOX or NBC assignment and its authorized streaming option. If your need is only a live call, NFL+ audio may be available on a supported device.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“I bought Sunday Ticket, but the game is still blocked”
Check whether the matchup is actually an out-of-market regular-season Sunday-afternoon CBS or FOX game. Sunday Ticket does not replace a local broadcast, a national window, preseason or postseason coverage. It also excludes certain select or digital-exclusive games. If the game fails that test, use the broadcaster shown in the local or national listing instead of repeatedly refreshing Sunday Ticket.
“YouTube TV shows the wrong local game”
Location permissions are central to YouTube TV’s local-channel decision. Turn on location access for the service, then use its official home-area and current-area process to correct the displayed location. Travel can change which local games appear. A service cannot lawfully show the home-market feed when it believes you are watching from another market.
“The app says I need to buy the package again”
Verify the signed-in Google account before purchasing anything. YouTube’s setup guidance identifies an incorrect account as a reason for a missing game or a “Get NFL Sunday Ticket” prompt. Sign out of extra accounts, sign back in to the purchasing account and check the subscription status.
“The game works on my phone but not my television”
That difference can be an entitlement rule rather than a connection failure. NFL+ mobile video is limited to phone or tablet viewing, and television viewing or casting restrictions may apply. Check the product’s supported-device description before troubleshooting your home network.

How location, travel and permissions affect availability
Streaming services determine local rights from the current viewing area. Your billing ZIP code, team preference or normal home location does not guarantee the same feed while traveling.
- Allow the YouTube TV app or website to use location services.
- Make sure the device’s operating-system location setting is enabled, not only the browser permission.
- If YouTube TV identifies the wrong market, follow its home-area or current-area correction process rather than entering an arbitrary ZIP code.
- After moving between markets, close and reopen the app so the local listing can refresh.
- Use the actual location where you are watching; rights controls are not a setting to bypass.
If the displayed market is correct and the package still does not include the game, the problem is likely a rights mismatch rather than a GPS error.
Choosing a legal fix by your viewing goal
You want every regular-season Sunday-afternoon game, including teams outside your market
Compare the exact Sunday Ticket offering for the current season. It is the relevant route for non-local Sunday-afternoon CBS and FOX games, but budget and plan details are separate from eligibility. Verify that the game is not local, national, preseason, postseason or one of the excluded select or digital-exclusive events.
You only want the local team
Start with the local station assignment. If the game is on CBS, check Paramount+; if it is on FOX, check FOX One; if it is on NBC, check Peacock for the applicable Sunday Night Football or local NBC game. An indoor HDTV antenna may also work when the local station carries the game and reception is adequate at your address. Station availability and reception vary by home, so check both before buying an antenna.
You are away from home for one game
Use the service whose rights match the game in the market where you are physically located. Expect the YouTube TV local lineup to change during travel. Do not assume a home-market subscription can deliver the same local broadcast in another city.
You need audio rather than video
NFL+ audio is the most direct fit among the options described by the official guides. It can work on supported devices even when the corresponding live video is unavailable, but it remains an audio feed and does not unlock video.
You are watching on a television
Favor the broadcaster’s supported television app, a YouTube TV channel included for your market, or an antenna for an available local over-the-air station. Treat NFL+ as a mobile-first option unless the current product rules explicitly authorize your television setup.
Understand the difference between a rights problem and a technical problem
A buffering stream, failed sign-in or frozen picture can be technical. A clean message saying a game is unavailable, blacked out or requires another package usually reflects an entitlement decision. Restarting a router cannot grant a network’s rights.
- If other channels work but one matchup is blocked, compare that matchup with the package’s exclusions first.
- If the app displays the wrong city, correct location permissions before changing subscriptions.
- If the game appears in the guide but will not play, verify the account that purchased the channel or add-on.
- If video is unavailable but audio works, check whether your product includes only the audio feed for that device.
- If every channel fails, then test the connection, update the app and check the service-status page.
Keep the exact error wording. “Unavailable in your area,” “Get NFL Sunday Ticket” and a generic playback error point to different support paths.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cost and plan overlap: avoid paying for the wrong rights
There is no single NFL subscription that guarantees every local, national, preseason, postseason and out-of-market game. Compare the plan’s game category, screen eligibility and current price before subscribing; prices and promotional terms can change during a season.
Do not buy Sunday Ticket merely because a local game is missing, and do not add NFL+ to obtain a live out-of-market Sunday-afternoon broadcast. Conversely, a viewer who needs only a local CBS, FOX or NBC game may not need an out-of-market package at all. Check whether an existing YouTube TV plan already carries the local channel, whether the network’s own service is available, or whether an antenna can receive the station. Verify cancellation, billing and simultaneous-screen terms directly with the provider, since those details are product-specific.

International viewing note
NFL+ is a U.S.-only service according to NFL support. Viewers outside the United States should use the international distributor identified for their country; the NFL directs international viewers to DAZN. A U.S. ZIP-code lookup or U.S. Sunday Ticket assumption will not establish rights in another country.
What not to do
- Do not assume one subscription means every game. NFL packages are segmented by game type and market.
- Do not keep changing ZIP codes to force a local feed. Correct the service’s location data through its official process.
- Do not infer rights from the teams alone. The same team can appear on a local network one week and in a national or out-of-market package another week.
- Do not treat a technical workaround as a rights solution. VPNs, location spoofing and unauthorized streams can violate service terms and still fail when account and device checks run.
- Do not buy a second package before checking the account. A wrong signed-in account can make an existing subscription look absent.
When support is the right next step
Contact the service’s support team after you have verified the matchup, local ZIP-code listing, account, permissions, current location and device eligibility. Have the following ready:
- The exact game, date and kickoff time.
- Your physical viewing city and ZIP code.
- The account email used for the subscription.
- The product or plan name.
- The device model and app version.
- A screenshot or exact wording of the blackout message.
There is no single technical fix for every blackout notice. If all of those details are correct, support can determine whether the game is excluded by rights or whether the account has an entitlement or location error.
A quick decision checklist before kickoff
- Is this game local, national, out-of-market Sunday afternoon, Thursday night, preseason or postseason?
- Which network or platform is listed for my current ZIP code?
- Does my subscription cover that category rather than a different NFL window?
- Am I signed in to the purchasing account?
- Are location permissions enabled and is the current-area listing accurate?
- Is my device authorized for live video, or is this product mobile-only or audio-only?
- If the game is local, would the listed network’s streaming service or an antenna solve the problem?
- If every answer is correct, have I contacted the service instead of buying another package?
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the NFL game blacked out on my streaming service?
The service may not have rights for that matchup in your current market, or your package may exclude the game’s category. Check the exact game, local ZIP-code listing, broadcaster and subscription account.
Why can’t I watch my local NFL game on NFL+?
NFL+ is not a universal television replacement. Its live local and primetime video is offered on phones or tablets, and it does not provide live out-of-market Sunday-afternoon video. Use the assigned local broadcaster or its authorized service for television viewing.

For a regular-season Sunday-afternoon CBS or FOX game outside your local market, check NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube TV or as a YouTube Primetime Channel. Confirm that the game is not local, national, preseason, postseason or an excluded select or digital-exclusive event.
Why does YouTube TV show a different local game after I travel?
YouTube TV uses the current viewing area for local rights. Enable device and app location permissions and follow the official home-area or current-area correction process. Traveling can legitimately change the local lineup.
Does Sunday Ticket include every NFL game?
No. It is designed for out-of-market regular-season Sunday-afternoon CBS and FOX games. It excludes locally televised games, national broadcasts, preseason, postseason and certain select or digital-exclusive games.
Can an antenna fix an NFL blackout?
An indoor HDTV antenna may receive a local game when the local station carries it and reception is adequate at your address. Check station availability and reception first; an antenna cannot receive games assigned to another market or platform.

That may be a device entitlement rather than a network failure. NFL+ live video is limited to phones and tablets, and television viewing or casting restrictions can apply. Review the product’s supported-device rules.
Is NFL+ available outside the United States?
NFL support describes NFL+ as U.S.-only and directs international viewers to DAZN. Check the distributor and rights for your country instead of relying on a U.S. ZIP-code listing.
The Bottom Line
An NFL blackout is usually a rights-and-market mismatch, not a missing game. Identify the matchup, check the official listing for the ZIP code where you are watching, verify the account and location permissions, then use the broadcaster or package assigned to that game. Sunday Ticket is for eligible out-of-market Sunday-afternoon CBS and FOX games; NFL+ is mainly a mobile live-game and audio option, not a universal TV or out-of-market solution.
