A new PS5 game does not automatically require the newest firmware. The warning usually means that the particular disc or game build declares a minimum PS5 system-software version that your console does not yet meet. Sony says a console can show this notice when it is online or when a disc requiring a later system-software version is inserted. On a jailbroken console, accepting that update is a separate decision: the game may become playable, but the newer firmware may no longer support the jailbreak available on your current version.
What the PS5 firmware warning actually means
Sony’s official wording is conditional, not universal: “You will be notified about new system software updates if your console is connected to the internet or when you insert a game disc that requires a later system software version to play.” You can read the instruction on Sony’s PS5 system-software support page.

In practical terms, the game package has a minimum system-software requirement. If the version installed on your PS5 is below that minimum, the console can ask you to update before starting the game. That notice does not prove that every new release needs the latest firmware, that every disc contains a system update, or that the game is downloading a patch. It establishes only that this disc or build needs a later version than the one currently installed.

The distinction matters because a PS5 can handle two different kinds of updates:

| Update type | What changes | Typical trigger | Why it matters on a jailbroken console |
|---|---|---|---|
| System software (firmware) | The PS5 operating software | A system requirement, an online notification, or a disc that requires a later version | Changing the firmware can remove compatibility with a version-dependent jailbreak |
| Game or application update | The installed game’s files, fixes, or content | A game tile, library prompt, or the game’s own update check | A patch can have a different minimum firmware requirement from the original release |
Sony explains how to check these categories separately in its PS5 and PS4 update-checking instructions. Always identify which category the screen is asking you to update before selecting an option.
Why a disc or patch can require newer firmware
Each game release is tested against particular versions of the PS5 system software. A later release can depend on system capabilities that are not present, or not supported, on an older version. Sony’s public support instructions do not provide a universal list of those dependencies; the only reliable conclusion for a specific title is the requirement displayed by the console or supplied by the publisher.
The base disc and a later patch are not necessarily equivalent. The disc may start on one minimum version while a subsequent update raises the requirement. Conversely, a disc’s launch build may be usable on an older version even though an optional feature or later patch is not. Treat the exact game edition, region, and patch as separate variables rather than assuming that every copy of a title behaves identically.

- Disc at first launch: Inserting it can trigger the system-software notice described by Sony.
- Digital download: The console checks its software requirement during download or launch; there is no disc to remove, but the firmware condition can still apply.
- Updated installation: A patch may introduce a newer minimum requirement than the original game data.
Owning a physical PS5 game does not guarantee that it will run on an older firmware version. The disc is a distribution method, not a bypass for the console’s system-software check.
How to tell which update the console is requesting
Use the wording on the screen and the location of the prompt, not the age of the game, to diagnose it.
- Read the full message. If it says the PS5 system software must be updated, it is a firmware request. If it names the game or application and offers to download game data, it is a title update.
- Cancel rather than accept immediately. On a console whose firmware status matters, do not confirm an irreversible system change while you are still identifying the requirement.
- Check the installed system version. Open the PS5 system-software information screen and record the exact version number.
- Check the game’s update status separately. Use Sony’s update-checking guidance to distinguish the console version from the application version.
- Test the base installation conceptually. If the prompt appears only after requesting a patch, the disc’s original build and the patch may have different requirements. Do not assume that declining the patch makes every feature available.
Take a photograph or note of the wording and version numbers. Requirements change, and a precise record is more useful than a general statement such as “the game needs an update.”
What changes when the PS5 is jailbroken
A jailbreak is tied to particular firmware versions and exploit conditions. Updating the system software replaces the software environment on which that jailbreak works. A newer official version may therefore restore a stock console while leaving no compatible jailbreak method for the new version. The outcome depends on the specific console firmware and the state of current research; it is not the same for every PS5.

The report described a Relapse jailbreak associated with firmware up to 13.60 while noting that some newer games were already demanding firmware 14.00. Those figures are a dated report, not an official Sony compatibility table and not a permanent rule for all games, regions, or consoles.

No source establishes that an official firmware update can be rolled back, and no source establishes a universal workaround for every title. Do not update on the assumption that you can simply return to the old version later.
A decision process before you update
- Write down the console’s current firmware. Include the complete version number, not just “old” or “new.”
- Identify the exact software requirement. Record whether the requirement comes from the disc, the base game, or a named patch. Requirements for a different edition are not evidence about your copy.
- Check current jailbreak coverage for that exact firmware. Use a current specialist source and note its publication date. Support can change after Sony releases another system update.
- Decide whether the requested feature is essential. A base-game launch, an optional patch, downloadable content, and online play may impose different conditions.
- Value the two outcomes explicitly. If preserving the existing jailbreak matters more than playing this release now, leave the system unchanged. If the game is the priority and you accept losing jailbreak compatibility, an official update may be appropriate.
- Confirm that the update is official and intended for your model and region. Stop if the file or instruction comes from an untrusted source.
There is no universal “safe” answer. The correct choice depends on the exact requirement and on how much the owner values the current firmware setup.
Official ways to update a stock PS5
For a console that you have decided to keep on official software, Sony documents internet updating and an offline USB method.
Internet update
Use the PS5’s Settings area, open the System Software section, and choose the system-software update option shown on the console. Allow the process to finish without disconnecting power. Sony’s support page at playstation.com/en-gb/support/hardware/ps5/system-software/ provides the current on-screen procedure and cautions for the official method.
USB update
When internet updating is unavailable, Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide documents installing an update from a USB drive using Sony’s official update file. The guide is the PS5 Safety Guide for the CFI-20XX series. Sony warns against installing an update file obtained from another source. An offline installation is still a firmware change; using USB does not preserve jailbreak compatibility or provide a downgrade path.

“The disc asked for an update as soon as I inserted it.”
This is the specific conditional case Sony describes. The disc requires a later system-software version than the console currently has. Remove or leave the disc inserted as appropriate, but do not accept the firmware update until you have checked its impact on your console’s jailbreak status.

“The game installed, but a patch now asks for newer firmware.”
The original installation and the patch may have different requirements. Note the patch version and decide whether its fixes or content justify changing the console firmware. Declining the patch may leave the base build available, but it can also mean missing fixes, content, or online compatibility.
“The console says it needs an update, but I thought the game was new.”
Release date is not a reliable substitute for a version check. A late manufacturing batch, regional edition, or post-launch patch can differ from another copy. Use the exact message and version numbers shown by your console.
“I updated and the jailbreak no longer works.”
Do not assume that reinstalling the old files will restore it. Firmware-dependent methods may not carry forward, and the available status changes over time. Consult current specialist documentation for your exact version; avoid unofficial downgrade files and instructions that bypass Sony’s checks.

Does buying a physical PS5 game avoid the problem?
No. A physical edition can be useful when you want to control whether a patch is installed, but the disc can still require a later system-software version. Sony’s support statement applies precisely to a disc-triggered requirement. A disc-drive PS5, such as the models listed in Sony’s US product catalog at PlayStation Direct, does not change the firmware rule. Choose a disc edition for ownership or installation control, not as a guarantee that an older firmware version will run it.

What the evidence does not establish
- There is no verified percentage or count showing how many PS5 games require later firmware.
- There is no permanent compatibility chart covering every game, patch, console model, and jailbreak.
- There is no established universal method to reverse an official update.
- A report about one jailbreak range or one game example cannot be generalized to every release.
Those limits are why version-specific checks are more reliable than broad claims that “all new games” require the newest firmware.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I update only the game and not the PS5 firmware?
Sometimes a game patch can be declined while the installed base game remains available, but the exact behavior depends on the title. A patch that requires newer firmware cannot be installed without meeting that requirement.
Will inserting any new PS5 disc update the console automatically?
No. Sony describes a notification when a disc requires a later system-software version. The notice is conditional, not a claim that every new disc carries or installs an update.
Is the firmware number alone enough to decide whether my jailbreak is safe?
No. You also need the exact jailbreak method, console model, game edition, and patch requirement, checked against current dated specialist information.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan Sony’s USB update method preserve a jailbreak?
No. USB is an official installation route, not a preservation technique. Installing the official file still changes the console firmware.
Should I stay offline to avoid the prompt?
Being offline may prevent online notifications, but inserting a disc can still produce the requirement notice described by Sony. Offline use does not make incompatible game software compatible.
The Bottom Line
Read the prompt as a version requirement, not proof that every new PS5 game needs the newest firmware. On a jailbroken console, compare the exact game or patch requirement with current support for your installed firmware, then choose deliberately between new-game access and preserving the existing jailbreak.
