Neuberger Berman’s neutral view on global equities is a tactical balance, not a prediction of a worldwide market collapse. The firm sees resilient growth and improving earnings, but believes stretched valuations, concentrated U.S. mega-cap exposure, uncertain interest rates and inflation, oil-shock risk, trade friction and geopolitical conflict make an across-the-board stock overweight difficult to justify.
What “neutral” means in this case
A neutral global-equity stance generally means targeting roughly benchmark-level exposure rather than making a large increase or decrease in stocks. It leaves room for meaningful differences inside the portfolio. Neuberger Berman can be neutral on global equities overall while favoring some countries, sectors or companies and avoiding others.

The firm’s outlooks remain constructive on the medium-term direction of growth and risk assets. In its second-quarter 2026 outlook, Research Analyst Amr Hanafy wrote: “Persistent macro tailwinds and broadening earnings growth keep us constructive on risk assets through the fog of war.” That constructive baseline is being balanced against risks that could damage near-term returns.

Conflicting investment horizons
An IPE listing for Neuberger Berman’s “Engine Running, Shifting to Neutral,” dated July 4, 2023, described a committee response to conflicting short- and medium-term signals. That tension still explains why a neutral label can coexist with positive long-term economic expectations: the earnings outlook may be sound while the next several quarters remain unusually sensitive to policy and shocks.

Valuations are less forgiving
Neuberger Berman’s third-quarter 2025 commentary highlighted how much of the U.S. market’s performance had been concentrated in a small group of very large technology companies. In the first half of 2025, the Magnificent 7 produced a 2.6% total return, compared with 6.2% for the S&P 500, according to Neuberger Berman Research and FactSet. The commentary also described mega-cap valuations as stretched.
The second-quarter 2026 outlook said the S&P 500 forward price-to-earnings ratio had fallen 10% from its October 2025 peak, but still put the Magnificent 7 at 26 times forward earnings. A pullback from a peak does not automatically make an asset cheap; at that valuation, future returns depend heavily on companies continuing to deliver strong earnings growth.

Oil, war and trade can alter the earnings path
The 2026 outlook warned that a protracted oil shock or an escalation in geopolitical conflict could increase equity risk in the near term. Higher energy costs can squeeze consumers and corporate margins, while conflict and trade restrictions can disrupt supply chains and raise inflation. Neuberger Berman’s 2025 allocation commentary likewise said that “macro, trade-related and geopolitical risks remain elevated and continue to pose threats to our constructive baseline.”

Rates, inflation and policy remain uncertain
Equities are sensitive to the discount rate investors apply to future profits. If inflation proves persistent, central banks may keep rates higher for longer; if growth weakens sharply, earnings estimates can fall. The firm’s outlooks point to monetary easing and fiscal stimulus as supports, but do not treat either as a guaranteed or uninterrupted tailwind.
Which regions Neuberger Berman prefers
Overall neutrality does not mean equal conviction in every market. The firm’s second-quarter 2026 regional framework identified these relative positions:
| Region | Position in the 2Q 2026 outlook | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | Overweight | A preferred region relative to the global benchmark. |
| Emerging markets | Overweight | A preferred allocation despite the higher volatility and country risk typical of these markets. |
| United States | Upgraded to overweight | Improving momentum supports a positive relative view, even as concentration and valuation risks remain. |
| Europe | Downgraded to underweight | The firm described Europe as more constrained than the United States, Japan and China. |
This regional dispersion is the practical consequence of a neutral global stance: expected returns are being sought through selectivity rather than a single call on all equities.

Is Neuberger Berman bearish on equities?
No. The published material supports a cautious or balanced position, not a broad bearish forecast. The firm remains constructive on growth and risk assets over a medium-term horizon, while acknowledging that valuation, policy and geopolitical risks could produce disappointing results in the shorter term. Neutral is therefore closer to “stay invested, but demand better compensation for risk” than to “exit stocks.”

What the stance can mean for a portfolio
Investors using the view as an allocation framework can translate it into four disciplines:
Best Value
- Keep diversification. Avoid allowing one country, theme or handful of mega-cap companies to determine the outcome of the entire equity portfolio.
- Emphasize earnings durability. Companies with recurring demand, credible cash generation and pricing power may be better able to withstand slower growth or higher costs than firms dependent on optimistic forecasts.
- Check balance sheets. Businesses carrying heavy refinancing needs are more exposed if rates remain elevated or credit conditions tighten.
- Match risk to the horizon. A medium-term constructive outlook does not protect money needed during a potential oil, policy or geopolitical shock. Near-term spending should remain in assets suited to that liability.
These are portfolio principles, not a promise that any region or quality screen will outperform. Neuberger Berman’s views are investment judgments and can change as earnings, valuations and policy conditions change.

The exact video named in the headline could not be conclusively matched to a publisher page, date or speaker. InvestmentNews confirms a related Neuberger Berman video dated December 17, 2025 featuring Jeff Blazek, and Neuberger Berman’s equities page lists later research content, but neither establishes that either item is the precise video referenced here. The investment rationale above comes from the firm’s identified outlook and allocation commentaries rather than from unverified video metadata.
