The NBA has described the collection as a way to highlight each franchise’s distinct identity, with designs that can depart from its familiar colors, symbols, and visual style. That makes City Edition different in purpose from a uniform that simply offers another version of a team’s standard look. The useful question is not only what colors a jersey uses, but what story its design is meant to communicate.
Why do NBA teams wear different jerseys?
To express a city or franchise story
City Edition designs draw on details connected to a team’s place and history. For example, Detroit’s 2022-23 design referenced Saint Cecelia’s gym, while Chicago’s used the city’s Municipal Y symbol. To connect basketball with community and culture
The NBA says the uniforms are intended to connect the game with the communities around each franchise and to engage current and future fans. NBA Team Brand and Uniform Product Lead Nadia Roohparvar said the uniforms represent things important to each city and could help educate and inspire the next generation.
To give fans another way to show team identity
A uniform can carry a team’s identity beyond the court, and City Edition apparel gives fans another way to express their connection to a franchise. Nike Global Product Director of Sports Apparel for Men’s Basketball Jesse Alvarez said teams know their fan bases and aim to give fans what they want through the lens of each team’s stories.

How are City Edition uniforms designed?
Nike develops the designs with the teams, which bring knowledge of their own fan bases and stories. For the 2022-23 collection, the NBA reported that the design process began in July 2020—an example of how far ahead this work can start, not a fixed timeline for every season.

Are City Edition uniforms also merchandise?
Yes. NBA announcements have directed fans to NBA Store for season-specific City Edition jerseys, so they are both on-court uniforms and products available to fans. That commercial availability does not establish that increasing sales is the stated purpose, nor do the official explanations cited here quantify effects on sales, viewership, or fandom.
Availability depends on the season and product. The NBA’s 2023-24 City Edition announcement described that season’s jerseys and linked to NBAStore.com; it does not establish whether a particular older design is currently in stock.

How does City Edition fit with newer NBA uniform collections?
Uniform categories and product availability can change over time, so City Edition should not be assumed to describe every current alternate uniform. In a September 9, 2026 announcement, Nike described its NBA Standard Issue collection as connecting on-court apparel with fans’ team devotion, with hoodies, pants, T-shirts, and shorts scheduled for launch drops on September 15 and October 12 at Nike.com, NBAStore.com, and selected retailers.
The same announcement said Specter Edition uniforms and apparel for eight franchises with roots in the earliest NBA chapters would be available later in fall 2026. Nike said those designs draw on franchise history, city heritage, and fan culture. This is dated context about those collections; it does not show that City Edition has disappeared league-wide. Nike Basketball VP and Creative Director Ross Klein described basketball as a culture and a form of self-expression.

- It is: a team-specific uniform category intended to express stories tied to a franchise, its city, or its community.
- It can be: a visible departure from core team branding, using local references such as symbols, places, or history.
- It is not: a reliable label for every alternate uniform category or a guarantee of any particular sales or audience result.
