A NASA astronaut can stop flying for several very different reasons. A medical restriction, a temporary safety grounding, a decision to assign another astronaut to a mission, a move into management or engineering, and retirement are not interchangeable outcomes. “Flight status” can refer to authorization to serve as aircrew on a NASA aircraft, eligibility for a spaceflight mission, or both in ordinary conversation.
The key distinction is that losing a current flight assignment does not by itself prove an astronaut is medically disqualified. NASA evaluates medical fitness, operational risk, mission requirements, training, performance, and career assignments through separate processes.

What “flight status” means at NASA
NASA uses flight-status language in more than one setting. The aircraft-operations meaning concerns personnel assigned as aircrew on NASA aircraft. Under NASA Procedural Requirements (NPR) 7900.3D, aircrew assignments require Center Director and Human Resources approval. The policy also allows aircrew to be removed from flight status temporarily after a mishap or a high-visibility close call. That is an operational safety action, not automatically a medical finding.
The astronaut meaning concerns eligibility to train for and perform a space mission. NASA’s aerospace medical standards, mission evaluations, and recurring recertification determine whether a career astronaut can safely perform assigned duties. An astronaut can therefore be authorized to fly NASA aircraft while not assigned to a spacecraft mission, or be medically restricted from one activity while remaining eligible for another after review.

When news reports say an astronaut was “grounded,” the word may describe a temporary operational restriction, a medical limitation, or simply the absence of a current crew assignment. The exact NASA status and effective date are essential before drawing a conclusion about an individual.
Medical reasons an astronaut may leave flight status
NASA’s medical bar covers the actual mission environment
NASA’s Aerospace Medical Certification Standard is designed to protect health, safety, and long-term occupational performance. The 2023 standard, on a page updated in 2026, addresses the demands of high-performance-aircraft operations, hypobaric and hyperbaric exposure, unusual gravity and high-g environments, extravehicular activity, robotic-arm operations, and other mission tasks. A condition that is manageable in ordinary life may still require evaluation when a crew member must work in a spacecraft, spacesuit, aircraft, or isolated habitat.
NASA explains the reason for that conservative approach: astronauts work in a harsh, isolated environment with significant physiological and psychological effects and without immediate access to normal terrestrial treatment. Medical selection and annual recertification are intended to reduce both in-mission danger and longer-term health risk.

A medical concern does not produce an automatic yes-or-no result. NASA’s standard contains disqualifying criteria, but it also provides a waiver process. The examining physician compiles and presents relevant medical information; the Aerospace Medicine Board makes a recommendation; and the Chief Health and Medical Officer makes the final disposition on medical status.

- Temporary restriction: the astronaut is held from a flight or specific task while receiving treatment, completing testing, or demonstrating recovery.
- Waiver: NASA accepts a documented risk under defined conditions, sometimes for particular missions or duties rather than every activity.
- Disqualification: the astronaut no longer meets the applicable medical standard for the relevant role.
Those categories matter because a temporary restriction can later end, and a waiver can preserve eligibility even though the astronaut is not an unrestricted candidate. Public sources generally do not identify an individual’s private medical information, so a general claim that someone was grounded “for health reasons” should not be expanded into a diagnosis without a case-specific official statement.
Recertification is ongoing
Medical qualification is not a one-time examination at the beginning of an astronaut career. NASA’s Crew Selection and Recertification program is designed to ensure the health, safety, and occupational longevity of career astronauts. Annual review allows NASA to account for changes in health, treatment, physical capability, psychological readiness, and the requirements of upcoming duties.

The medical question for a long-duration mission, a spacewalk, a high-performance aircraft sortie, or robotic-arm operation may not be identical. A limitation on one duty therefore does not necessarily answer whether the astronaut can perform every other job in the astronaut corps.
Why a medically qualified astronaut may not be assigned to a mission
Mission selection is a staffing decision, not a medical verdict
NASA chooses crews by matching mission needs with people who are medically qualified and ready for the required training. The agency considers technical skills, personality mix, previous spaceflight experience, astronaut and spacesuit size, Russian-language capability when relevant, training progress, and performance. Vehicle constraints, spacesuit fit, international coordination, and the timing of training can all affect the final combination.
As a result, an astronaut can remain fully eligible for spaceflight while waiting for an assignment, serving as a backup, or training for a later mission. “Not selected for this crew” means only that another mix better fit that mission’s requirements at that point. It is not evidence of disqualification.

| Situation | What it usually describes | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| No current mission assignment | Crew-planning decision based on skills, timing, training, compatibility, or mission needs | Medical unfitness or permanent grounding |
| Temporary removal from aircraft flight status | Operational safety action after a mishap or high-visibility close call under NPR 7900.3D | A lasting medical diagnosis or end of astronaut eligibility |
| Medical restriction | Health review, treatment, testing, waiver consideration, or task limitation | That the astronaut can never return to any flight role |
| Medical disqualification | Final medical determination that the applicable standard is not met | That the person has retired or left NASA employment |
| Retirement or reassignment | Career decision to leave the astronaut corps or move into another NASA role | That a medical event caused the change |
Backups and delayed assignments are normal parts of operations
Space missions require years of training and can change because of vehicle schedules, launch opportunities, international partners, or technical problems. An astronaut who is not on the prime crew may be a backup, a future candidate, or an active member of the corps performing ground duties. Public announcements often identify the selected crew but do not list every qualified astronaut who was considered, so absence from an announcement should not be interpreted as a negative medical decision.

Career changes that take an astronaut away from flying
Management, engineering, science, and training assignments
Astronauts develop expertise that NASA can use outside a cockpit or spacecraft. Common career paths include management, engineering and vehicle development, scientific work, astronaut training, safety, administrative leadership, and support for mission operations. Moving into one of these jobs can reduce or end active flight assignments without any finding that the astronaut is medically unable to fly.
The exact terms and timing vary by person and by NASA center. To explain an individual’s change accurately, use the astronaut’s official biography or a NASA announcement that states the new role and date. Do not infer a cause from a change in job title alone.
Retirement is a separate outcome
Retirement from the astronaut corps is a career status, not a synonym for medical disqualification. An astronaut may retire after completing missions, accept another government or private-sector role, or leave after a long period of nonflight work. Conversely, a medically restricted astronaut may remain a NASA employee while a review or treatment is underway. The words “retired,” “reassigned,” and “medically disqualified” should therefore be reserved for the outcome documented by NASA.
Agency-policy and operational reasons for a temporary grounding
Mishaps and high-visibility close calls
NPR 7900.3D states: “Aircrew members may be removed from flight status on a temporary basis subsequent to mishap or high-visibility Close Calls.” The rule is effective May 1, 2017, and is listed with an expiration date of February 16, 2030. Its purpose is to protect safety while an event is investigated, evidence is collected, and corrective actions are assessed.

This kind of removal can apply to aircraft aircrew and should not be reported as proof that an astronaut has failed a medical examination. A safety investigation may identify equipment, procedures, training, or organizational factors rather than a personal medical problem. The restriction can end when the responsible authority determines that the person and the operation are ready to resume.
Operational readiness can change without a fault finding
NASA may also keep a qualified astronaut on the ground while training, vehicle integration, language preparation, spacesuit fitting, or mission planning is incomplete. A crew assignment must be safe and workable for the entire team; a person can be eligible in principle but not ready for a particular launch date. Such a decision is administrative and operational, not a declaration that the astronaut is permanently grounded.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How NASA status decisions are separated
The following sequence helps explain what a reported status change actually means:
- Identify the activity. Ask whether the report concerns NASA-aircraft aircrew duties, spacecraft mission eligibility, a specific task such as a spacewalk, or a crew assignment.
- Check the authority. Aircraft flight status follows NASA aircraft-operations policy and Center-level approvals. Astronaut medical status follows the aerospace medical certification process.
- Determine whether the action is temporary. A post-incident stand-down or treatment period is different from a final disqualification or retirement.
- Look for the documented reason. NASA biographies, mission announcements, medical-status statements when released, and official investigation reports are stronger evidence than a headline or rumor.
- Match the date to the decision. An astronaut’s role can change over time; a later reassignment does not rewrite an earlier temporary restriction.
This approach prevents the most common error: treating every period away from a spacecraft as if it were one formal NASA status.

Does age automatically remove an astronaut from flight status?
The cited NASA standards support medical, operational, and mission-assignment criteria, not a universal age cutoff that automatically removes every astronaut from flight status. Age can correlate with changing health, career plans, or retirement timing, but it is not enough by itself to establish why a particular astronaut stopped flying.
Best Value
For an individual case, the relevant evidence is the official reason NASA gives: a medical disposition, a reassignment, a retirement announcement, or an operational order. If no such statement is public, the responsible description is that the person was not assigned or that the public record does not establish the reason.
What support continues after an astronaut leaves flight status?
Leaving flight status does not automatically end NASA medical support. NASA describes continuing care after missions and after retirement through the Lifetime Surveillance of Astronaut Health program. The TREAT Astronauts Act authorizes NASA to monitor, diagnose, and treat medical and psychological conditions associated with spaceflight for former astronauts.
NASA’s health-care standards also describe care continuing beyond retirement from the astronaut corps. This continuing relationship reflects the long-term effects that spaceflight can have and the need to monitor former crew members even when they no longer train for missions. It does not mean every former astronaut remains eligible to fly.
What the public record can—and cannot—show
Authoritative NASA sources do not publish a reliable count or percentage of astronauts who leave flight status for medical, career, or agency-policy reasons. Any numerical rate would therefore be speculative. The public record is stronger on the rules than on aggregate outcomes: it documents the medical review framework, assignment criteria, aircraft safety authority, and continuing health-care programs.
When reporting a named astronaut, distinguish the documented fact from an inference. “NASA announced a reassignment to a management role” is different from “NASA grounded the astronaut for medical reasons.” “The astronaut was not listed on the mission crew” is different from “the astronaut was disqualified.” Precision protects both the reader and the person being described.
The practical answer to “Why was this astronaut grounded?”
There are four questions to answer in order: What kind of flight status was involved? Was the action temporary or final? Did NASA cite a medical decision, an operational event, or a career assignment? What date and source document the change? Only after those questions are answered can “grounded,” “removed from flight status,” “medically disqualified,” “not assigned,” “reassigned,” or “retired” be used accurately.
In short, NASA astronauts leave flight status for medical review or disqualification, temporary safety restrictions, mission-planning decisions, career moves, or retirement. Those pathways can look similar from the outside but carry different consequences, and a missing mission assignment alone says very little about an astronaut’s health or future eligibility.
