I traced the recurring low-space warning by checking what Windows said was using storage, then inspecting the files and cleanup options behind the largest category. The key was not assuming that one cleanup button would fix every full drive: Windows can show whether the space is tied up in personal files, apps, temporary files, or system storage, and each calls for a different response.
Find what is using space on C:
- Check the free-space figure. Open File Explorer, select This PC, and look at the available space on the C: drive.
- Open Storage settings. Go to Settings > System > Storage. Windows groups usage into categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved. Use the largest category to guide your next check; the category view does not, by itself, identify the particular files or explain what happened on another person’s PC. See Microsoft’s guide to Storage settings in Windows.
- Inspect the likely source. Open a category or its recommendations where available, then review what Windows offers before deleting anything.
If personal files are taking the space
Check Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads. Sort files by size so large videos, archives, installers, and other space-heavy items are easy to spot. Delete only files you no longer need; deleting a file sends it to the Recycle Bin, where it continues to consume space until the bin is emptied.

For files you want to keep, move them to connected external storage rather than deleting them. An external drive is useful when personal files are the main space consumer; it also gives you a place to retain files without keeping all of them on C:. Windows can let you change where new content is saved as well. The available controls can differ between Windows versions; Microsoft describes these options in Free up drive space in Windows.

If temporary files or old Windows files are taking the space
Open Settings > System > Storage and review Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations, depending on your Windows version. Recommendations can include temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Review each selection and its description before confirming removal; these lists are prompts for review, not an instruction to delete everything.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Be especially careful with Previous Windows installation(s), often associated with the Windows.old folder. Removing the previous installation can free space, but it also removes the option to return to the previous Windows version. Keep it if you may need that rollback; remove it only when you are comfortable giving up that option.
Microsoft’s Windows 10 guidance also documents Disk Cleanup, including Clean up system files. The precise labels and availability can vary by Windows version. See Microsoft’s Windows cleanup instructions for the applicable steps.

If installed apps are the largest category
Review Cleanup recommendations or the installed-app list in Settings, then uninstall only apps you recognize and no longer need. An app may have associated data, so check what you are removing rather than treating the whole category as disposable. Windows’ category view and recommendations are described in Storage settings in Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSet up Storage Sense without surprises
Storage Sense can automate selected cleanup on the system drive, usually C:, but its effect depends on its settings. Microsoft says it works on the system drive only. By default, it does not manage Downloads or cloud content unless you configure those options. Review the choices and timing under Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense; Windows version and current settings can affect the labels and behavior. Microsoft’s instructions are in Manage drive space with Storage Sense.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
In Windows 11 version 22H2, Microsoft says eligible OneDrive cloud files are set to become online-only after 30 days by default. Your settings and files marked Always keep on this device affect availability and behavior. Online-only files can be downloaded when needed, so consider whether you need offline access before changing cloud-file settings.
If free space disappears again quickly
First check Storage settings again to see which category has grown. A particular Microsoft-documented case is a Temp folder filling with Microsoft Store .appx files. For that symptom, Microsoft recommends resetting the Store, clearing its cache with wsreset.exe, running the Windows Store Apps and Windows Update troubleshooters, and restarting. This is a targeted troubleshooting path for that Store-related case, not a general explanation for every recurring low-space problem. Follow Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps if the described files are present.

If Windows needs space for an update
Update storage requirements vary by device and by the installed content and updates; there is no universal free-space figure that applies to every PC. If Windows offers the option, an external storage device can provide temporary space for an update and reduce how much is needed on the system drive. That helps with an update-specific shortage, but it does not remove the need to address a category that keeps growing. See Microsoft’s Windows update storage guidance.
