Why Motion Blur Makes Some Players Feel Dizzy or Nauseous

Motion blur is not proven to make everyone sick, and research does not establish ordinary flat-screen blur as an independent cause of nausea. For some players, however, blur can add to a larger stream of visual-motion cues that suggests the body is moving while the vestibular system senses that it is sitting still. That sensory mismatch can produce visually induced motion-sickness symptoms, especially when combined with camera bob, shake, weapon sway, automatic movement, a wide field of view or high camera sensitivity.

What is happening when a game makes you feel sick?

Games can create motion-sickness symptoms even when the player is physically stationary. A rapidly turning camera, a sprinting animation or a blurred image can tell the eyes that the world is moving. Meanwhile, the inner ear and muscles report that the body is seated and mostly still. The brain has to reconcile those conflicting signals. In susceptible players, that conflict may produce nausea, dizziness, vertigo, headache, eye strain and other unpleasant bodily or arousal changes.

This is commonly called visually induced motion sickness or cybersickness. The Bárány Society’s consensus criteria describe it as a condition associated with visually perceived self-motion or movement in the surrounding scene. The CDC Yellow Book presents the widely accepted sensory-conflict, also called neural-mismatch, explanation: incoming visual, vestibular and kinesthetic information does not match what the brain’s internal model expects.

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 gives a concrete example. First-person camera bob can visually suggest walking while the player is actually sitting. Its explanation states: “This mismatch between the visual perception of body movement and actual body movement contributes to feelings of motion sickness among players.” Motion blur can be part of the same presentation, but it is only one possible contributor.

Where motion blur fits—and where the evidence stops

Motion blur blends or softens consecutive frames to suggest the streaking that a camera would capture during rapid movement. Developers use it to make camera pans look smoother, hide abrupt changes between frames, or create a cinematic style. During a turn, sprint or fast object movement, blur can occupy much of the screen and make the visual scene feel continuously in motion.

That presentation may be uncomfortable for a player whose eyes are receiving strong movement cues while the body remains still. It is reasonable to test blur as one variable. It is not accurate to say that conventional monitor-game motion blur has been proven to cause nausea by itself. The available evidence establishes that dynamic video games and computer displays can trigger visually induced motion sickness, and Microsoft’s accessibility guidance lists motion blur among settings developers should make controllable. Neither finding isolates ordinary blur as the sole cause.

Individual sensitivity, the game’s camera design and the combination of effects matter. One person may tolerate a blurred racing game but feel ill during a first-person game with head bob and rapid strafing. Another may notice no difference when blur is disabled but improve after reducing camera shake or changing the field of view.

Why symptoms vary from player to player

Different sensory thresholds

People differ in how much visual motion they can tolerate before symptoms begin. Susceptibility can also change with fatigue, illness, stress, dehydration or a long uninterrupted session. A setting that feels fine for ten minutes may become uncomfortable after an hour.

The camera and movement model

A steady third-person camera, a first-person camera that bobs with each step, and a camera that automatically swings during attacks provide very different motion signals. Rapid acceleration, frequent rotation and movement at the edge of the screen can be more provocative than a slow, centered pan. Blur may amplify the overall impression, but it does not determine the entire experience.

Display and viewing conditions

Screen size, viewing distance, frame-rate consistency, brightness and contrast can change how intense movement appears. These factors are not proof of a blur-specific mechanism; they are reasons to treat comfort as a personal, system-and-game interaction rather than a universal rule.

What studies actually show

A console-game study

A 2008 Human Factors study of 40 undergraduate participants playing console video games reported motion-sickness incidence ranging from 42% to 56% across its conditions. That figure describes the study’s participants and setup; it is not a prevalence estimate for all players. The study also did not isolate motion blur, so it cannot establish that blur produced the reported symptoms.

A contrasting VR experiment

A 2017 experiment tested a purpose-built intervention in a virtual-reality first-person shooter: the display was blurred during controller-driven rotation. Participants experienced lower overall cybersickness and a later onset of symptoms. This does not mean that turning on ordinary monitor-game blur will help. The experiment involved a head-mounted display, a specific rotation-triggered technique and a different visual and vestibular environment. Its useful lesson is narrower: the effect of blur depends on how, when and where it is applied. Blur is not inherently harmful in every context.

Official player-safety advice

Square Enix’s Health and Safety Information for Playing Square Enix Videogames, last updated November 10, 2020, says: “Playing and watching videogames can cause motion sickness in some people.” It advises stopping and resting when dizziness or nausea occurs, seeking physician guidance and consulting a physician if negative symptoms persist.

Which settings should you test?

Microsoft’s accessibility guidance treats several visual-motion controls as relevant, not just blur. Test them one at a time where the game provides them so you can identify the setting that changes your response.

Setting What it changes How to test it
Motion blur Softens frames during camera or object movement Compare on, reduced and off while repeating the same movement
Camera bobbing Adds simulated head or body movement while walking Disable it, then retest walking and sprinting
Camera shake Moves the view during explosions, impacts or abilities Turn it down or off, especially during combat
Weapon sway Offsets the first-person view as the weapon moves Disable or reduce it if symptoms follow aiming or strafing
Automatic camera movement Moves or recenters the view without direct input Turn off auto-look, forced recentering or cinematic camera moves where possible
Field of view Changes how much of the scene is visible and how fast nearby scenery appears to pass Try a modest adjustment in either direction; comfort is individual
Camera sensitivity Controls how far the view turns for a given input Lower it to reduce abrupt rotation and overshoot

These are accessibility-oriented adjustments, not guaranteed treatments. A wider field of view can feel calmer to one player and more distorted or intense to another. Change only one variable at a time, keep the rest of the settings constant and note what happens.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Stop at the first warning sign. Pause as soon as you notice queasiness, dizziness, headache, eye strain, sweating or a sense that the room is moving. Do not try to push through escalating symptoms.
  2. Rest before testing again. Leave the screen, sit somewhere stable and wait until you feel normal. Follow the Square Enix advice to seek medical guidance if symptoms persist or recur outside play.
  3. Record the trigger. Note the game, viewpoint, activity, session length and effects on screen. “Only during sprinting” or “only during rapid right-stick turns” is more useful than a general label such as “the game feels bad.”
  4. Disable motion blur first. Replay the same short section with blur off. If there is a reduced setting, test it separately rather than assuming the lowest value behaves like off.
  5. Remove added camera movement. Turn off bob, shake, weapon sway and automatic camera movement, then repeat the same route or encounter.
  6. Adjust rotation. Lower camera sensitivity and, if needed, make smaller deliberate turns. Avoid changing sensitivity and field of view simultaneously, or you will not know which change mattered.
  7. Test field of view cautiously. Move it in small increments and spend a short period in a safe area. There is no universally correct value.
  8. Use short sessions. Stop while you still feel well. A symptom-free short session is a better test than a long session that ends with severe nausea.

How to tell blur from the rest of the camera design

Blur is a plausible suspect when discomfort appears specifically during fast pans, sprinting or vehicle turns and improves immediately when the blur setting changes. Even then, the result does not prove blur is the only mechanism. The same menu change may also alter perceived sharpness or make other movement cues easier to process.

If turning blur off changes nothing, look at camera bob, shake, sway, automatic movement, field of view and sensitivity. Symptoms that occur during all movement, including slow walking, suggest a broader visual-motion issue. Symptoms that occur only during cutscenes or forced camera moves point toward automatic movement rather than the blur slider alone.

Compare like with like: the same display, distance, brightness, frame-rate mode, game area and controller. A setting test is useful only if the visual stimulus is otherwise similar. If a game has a built-in comfort preset, treat it as a starting point and verify each option because presets differ between titles.

When to stop experimenting and seek medical advice

Stop playing and rest whenever symptoms start. Contact a physician for further guidance if dizziness or nausea is severe, lasts after you stop, keeps returning, or occurs in ordinary activities unrelated to games. This article cannot diagnose motion sickness or another medical condition. Persistent vertigo, fainting, severe headache, visual disturbances or other unusual symptoms deserve prompt professional assessment rather than more graphics-setting tests.

Design implications for developers

Comfort controls should be easy to find, available before gameplay and independently adjustable. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 specifically identifies camera shake, camera bobbing, weapon sway, automatic camera movement, field of view and motion blur as effects designers should consider controlling. A good implementation does not force players to accept a single cinematic presentation.

Useful implementation details

  • Provide separate sliders or toggles instead of one opaque “cinematic” switch.
  • Save comfort settings per profile so they survive updates and new sessions.
  • Preview changes in a low-risk area before a player enters a fast combat sequence.
  • Avoid forced camera rotation and recentering where gameplay permits.
  • Explain what each option changes in plain language, including whether it affects first-person view, third-person view, vehicles or cutscenes.

These choices do not guarantee that every player will be comfortable, but they let players identify and reduce the visual cues that conflict with their body’s motion signals.

The bottom line on motion blur and nausea

Some players feel dizzy or nauseous because a game presents convincing movement while their bodies remain still. Motion blur can add to that visual load, but current evidence does not establish conventional non-VR blur as a standalone cause. Treat it as one adjustable factor among camera bob, shake, sway, automatic movement, field of view and sensitivity. Stop when symptoms begin, rest, change one setting at a time and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
