More accurate AI does not consume electricity because “accuracy” is a physical property. It often consumes more energy because the system obtains better results by doing more work: training a larger model, activating more parameters, processing longer inputs, generating longer answers, or testing and revising several possible answers before responding. Every extra calculation requires energy.
That relationship is conditional rather than automatic. A smaller model selected for a specific task, a mixture-of-experts architecture that activates only relevant components, efficient batching, and newer accelerators can deliver the same practical accuracy with less energy than a larger or poorly optimized system. The right comparison is therefore energy per task at a defined quality level—not a universal number for “one AI prompt.”

Accuracy is an outcome; computation is what uses electricity
An AI model becomes more accurate when its training or inference process extracts more useful information from data. The electricity is consumed by the computation used to reach that outcome: arithmetic in accelerator chips, movement of data through memory, networking between machines, cooling, and the rest of the serving infrastructure.

| Stage | What happens | How it affects energy |
|---|---|---|
| Training or updating weights | The model processes very large datasets repeatedly and adjusts its parameters. | A major up-front or periodic energy cost. Larger models and more training steps generally require more computation. |
| Inference | The trained model answers an individual request. | A recurring cost paid for every query. Input length, output length, activated model components, reasoning strategy, hardware and serving conditions all matter. |
For a widely used service, inference can dominate the visible operational demand because the same model is run millions or billions of times. Improving a model may therefore raise energy in two separate ways: creating the improved weights can take more training computation, and using those weights can require more computation per request.

The International Energy Agency summarizes the immediate mechanism this way: “longer input queries and output answers require more compute and therefore consume more electricity.” Its Energy and AI report also identifies model size, input and output modality, algorithmic efficiency, inference-time scaling and hardware as important variables. International Energy Agency, Energy and AI (2025)
Five mechanisms that can raise energy for a more accurate answer
Larger models perform more operations
Increasing parameter count usually increases the amount of arithmetic and memory traffic needed for each token. All else equal, a 72-billion-parameter model does more work than a 7-billion-parameter model. Larger models can represent more patterns and may perform better on difficult or varied tasks, but that capability has a per-request cost.
Parameter count is not the whole story. Some architectures contain many total parameters but activate only a subset for each token. A mixture-of-experts (MoE) model routes a token to selected expert components instead of running every component. The IEA describes this selective activation as a way to save computation and energy while preserving model performance. The number of total parameters, the number activated, and the routing policy should therefore be reported separately.
Longer prompts and answers increase token work
Transformers must process the supplied context and generate an output sequence. A long document, a large conversation history, or many tool results gives the model more tokens to examine. A long answer requires the model to generate more tokens one by one. Both increase computation, and long contexts can also increase memory use for attention and key-value caches.

Length is influenced by the user as well as the model. Asking for a concise classification and asking for a detailed explanation are different workloads even when they use the same model. Output limits, retrieval settings and tool traces can materially change energy per request.
Reasoning and test-time compute spend extra effort before responding
Reasoning systems allocate additional computation at inference time. They may generate hidden or visible intermediate tokens, revise an initial answer, search among alternatives, call tools, or run several candidate solutions and select one. This can improve difficult math, coding and planning results, but it raises the work done for a single query.
The IEA calls this inference-time scaling: the model “thinks” more intensively before producing an answer. The extra computation can be dramatic, especially when long reasoning traces produce many tokens and reduce the number of requests that can be served concurrently on the same hardware.

Image generation, image understanding and especially video generation involve substantially more data and compute than a short text response in many deployments. A comparison that mixes modalities is not a fair test of model efficiency. The IEA lists input and output modality as a direct determinant of inference energy.

Serving choices change the result
Two deployments of the same weights can use different amounts of electricity. Batch size, request concurrency, accelerator utilization, memory movement, key-value-cache management, attention implementation, quantization and cooling overhead all affect energy per request. High concurrency can spread fixed costs across more users, while a long reasoning request can reduce concurrency and make each request more expensive. Commercial implementations often keep these details private, so model size alone cannot reveal the true energy cost.
What published measurements and estimates show
The available figures illustrate the mechanisms, but they are not interchangeable head-to-head tests. Each applies to a particular task, architecture, hardware setup or deployment assumption.
| Evidence | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Research, Joule, April 2026 | Median 0.31 Wh per query, with an interquartile range of 0.16–0.60 Wh, for optimized frontier-scale inference under the authors’ realistic large-scale deployment assumptions. Long reasoning and agentic queries used more than an order of magnitude more energy in the modeled scenario. If 10% of daily requests were long reasoning queries, overall demand could more than double. Combined model-design, serving and hardware improvements were estimated to offer an 8–20× reduction opportunity. | These are model-based estimates for a production-scale scenario, not a universal measurement for every commercial prompt or data center. |
| Jin, Wei and Brooks, arXiv preprint, 2025 | Experiments on Qwen2.5 1.5B, 7B, 14B and 32B models using A100 GPUs found that test-time compute sometimes delivered a better accuracy–energy trade-off than simply scaling model size. Indiscriminate test-time compute increased energy by as much as 97.48× in one 7B coding benchmark. | The 97.48× value is one benchmark-specific maximum, not a typical multiplier. Extra reasoning must be targeted to tasks that benefit from it. |
| Scientific Reports, 2026 text-classification study | In the reported comparison, Qwen 2.5 7B used seven times less energy than Qwen 2.5 72B with a 0.07-point accuracy reduction. In its Yelp example, accuracy was 0.60 for 7B versus 0.68 for 72B, while the 7B run used one-eighth the energy. | The experiment compared zero-shot LLMs with traditional models fine-tuned on task data, so it demonstrates task-specific trade-offs rather than a universal ranking. |
| Yang and Armour, ICML/PMLR, 2025 | An analysis of 1,200 ImageNet classification models found steeply declining accuracy gains as inference energy increased. | This is evidence of diminishing returns in that vision-classification setting, not a law covering every AI workload. |
The Microsoft Research figures appear in “Energy use of AI inference, efficiency pathways, and test-time scaling” (2026). The test-time-compute experiments are in Jin, Wei and Brooks (2025); the text-classification measurements are in Scientific Reports (2026); and the ImageNet analysis is in Yang and Armour (ICML/PMLR, 2025).
Why accuracy and energy are not locked together
Use the smallest model that meets the task requirement
A general-purpose frontier model may be unnecessary for sentiment labeling, routing, extraction or another narrowly defined task. A smaller model fine-tuned or prompted for that job can produce acceptable results with fewer operations. The 2026 text-classification study is a concrete example, although its zero-shot-versus-fine-tuned methodology means the result cannot be generalized to every application.

Route difficult requests selectively
A service can use a fast model for routine requests and send only ambiguous or high-stakes cases to a larger model or a reasoning mode. Likewise, test-time compute can be activated when a confidence check, evaluator or task classifier predicts that extra work will improve the answer. Applying the most expensive reasoning strategy to every request wastes energy when the easier path is already accurate enough.
Improve the architecture and serving stack
MoE routing, quantization, efficient attention, reuse of key-value caches, appropriate batching and high accelerator utilization can reduce energy without changing the requested quality. These optimizations must be measured on the actual workload because a technique that helps one sequence length or concurrency level may hurt another.
Choose efficient hardware, but read the metric correctly
The IEA, citing EpochAI (2025c), reports that a B200 is 60% more energy efficient by FLOP per watt than an H100, and an H100 is 80% more efficient than an A100. Those are hardware efficiency comparisons, not claims that a complete answer will consume 60% or 80% less electricity: total energy also depends on how many operations the model performs, utilization, memory and data-center overhead.

Before declaring one model “greener” or more efficient, hold the task and quality target constant and record the boundary of the measurement. A useful comparison includes:
Best Value
- Quality: accuracy, error rate, pass rate or task success on the same held-out examples.
- Workload: identical input length, output limit, modality and tool-use behavior.
- Computation: total parameter count and, for sparse models, parameters activated per token.
- Hardware: accelerator type, number of devices, precision and utilization.
- Serving: batch size, concurrency, caching, attention implementation and whether cooling or networking is included.
- Energy boundary: energy per query, per completed task, or total lifecycle energy; do not mix these units.
- Latency and reliability: a low-energy answer that fails often may consume more energy after retries or human correction.
- Evidence type: controlled experiment, measured production workload or modeled estimate, with the date and assumptions stated.
Comparing a per-query operational estimate with the total energy used to train a model, or comparing unrelated benchmarks, can create a precise-looking but meaningless conclusion.
Practical ways to reduce energy without abandoning accuracy
- Set an explicit quality target. Decide the minimum acceptable accuracy or task-success rate before choosing a model. This prevents paying for capabilities the application does not need.
- Benchmark a model ladder. Test small, medium and large candidates on the same representative data, recording quality, latency and energy per completed task.
- Limit unnecessary context. Remove duplicated history, retrieve only relevant passages and set an output budget appropriate to the user’s need.
- Gate reasoning. Use ordinary inference for simple requests and reserve long reasoning, multiple candidates or agent loops for cases where evaluation shows a measurable benefit.
- Match modality to the job. Do not invoke image or video generation when text, structured data or a compact classifier can satisfy the requirement.
- Optimize serving. Tune batching and concurrency, reuse caches safely, use efficient attention and precision, and monitor utilization rather than assuming the hardware is operating efficiently.
- Measure continuously. Track energy per successful task as traffic, prompt lengths, model versions and hardware change. A lower energy-per-query figure can still produce higher total demand if usage grows; the cited studies establish the efficiency mechanisms but do not quantify a general rebound effect.
Why there is no universal “energy per prompt” number
A per-query figure changes with the model, token counts, modality, hardware, serving software, concurrency and what the operator includes in the boundary. Public commercial disclosures often omit model dimensions and implementation details, which prevents independent calculation of exact energy demand. Even the 0.31 Wh median estimated by Microsoft Research is conditional on the authors’ 2026 deployment assumptions.
Total electricity demand is a separate question from energy per query. A modest per-request cost multiplied by enormous request volume can become a large system load, while a small fraction of long reasoning or agentic requests can shift the average sharply because they generate more tokens and reduce serving concurrency. Any serious claim should therefore state both the workload mix and the measurement method.
Bottom line
More accurate AI can require more energy when its accuracy comes from larger models, longer context or output, or additional inference-time reasoning. It does not have to: selective activation, task-specific models, targeted reasoning, efficient serving and better accelerators can improve accuracy per unit of energy. Evaluate systems on the same task and quality target, report the full operating conditions, and treat every per-query number as a conditional estimate rather than a universal fact.
