There is no universally best tank engine. A turbine can deliver high power from a compact package, start reliably in cold conditions and accept multiple fuels; a diesel can fit a different fuel, maintenance and logistics plan. The choice is made at the powertrain level, not by comparing engines in isolation. The M1 Abrams shows why the United States accepted a gas turbine, while diesel remains a major alternative for other armored vehicles.
What the engine choice really involves
A tank engine is one part of a tightly integrated system that includes the transmission, cooling, air filtration, fuel storage, exhaust arrangement, electrical generation, maintenance equipment and crew procedures. Changing the engine can alter the vehicle’s internal layout, center of gravity, thermal management, range, refueling process and field-repair concept.

Military designers therefore balance several questions at once:
- How much installed power is needed for the vehicle’s mass and mobility targets?
- How much volume and weight can the engine and transmission occupy?
- What fuels are available in the unit’s supply chain?
- How often will the vehicle move, wait with the engine running or operate in extreme temperatures?
- What tools, training, diagnostic equipment and spare powerpacks can the force support?
- How important are acoustic, thermal and visual signatures for the mission?
Those variables explain why a turbine is sensible for one tank while a diesel is preferable for another. They also mean that a claim such as “turbines are always better” or “diesels are always cheaper” is too broad to be useful.

The M1 Abrams: a gas-turbine case study
Engine and transmission
The M1 Abrams uses the Honeywell AGT1500 gas turbine. Honeywell says the engine has powered Abrams tanks since the early 1980s. General Dynamics Land Systems lists a 1,500-horsepower turbine for the M1A2 SEPv3. The National Academies describes the Abrams powertrain as an AGT1500 paired with an Allison X-1100 transmission.
The horsepower figure is a vehicle specification, not a promise that every operating condition produces the same acceleration or fuel consumption. Transmission gearing, vehicle mass, terrain, track condition and driver inputs determine how that power reaches the ground.
What Honeywell says the AGT1500 provides
Honeywell describes the AGT1500 as compact and multifuel, with cold-starting capability, responsive power and quiet operation. These are manufacturer-described design characteristics. They identify reasons a turbine can suit an armored vehicle, but they are not a controlled comparison proving that every turbine beats every diesel on each measure.

The rotating output shaft drives the transmission. Unlike a piston engine, it does not depend on many reciprocating cylinders, connecting rods and a crankshaft to produce rotation. That architecture can provide a high power output in a relatively compact package, while requiring substantial airflow and careful control of hot exhaust gases.
How a diesel tank engine differs
A diesel uses cylinders, pistons and a crankshaft to convert intermittent combustion events into shaft rotation. Modern military diesels can be turbocharged, electronically controlled and designed as modular powerpacks that combine the engine, transmission and associated systems. Their exact dimensions, output and fuel consumption vary widely by model.
Diesel technology is attractive when a force already operates a diesel-centered fuel and maintenance system. Commonality with trucks, generators and other equipment can simplify fuel handling and technician training, although the actual benefit depends on the force’s inventory and the tank’s design. A diesel’s suitability still has to be checked against the vehicle’s power requirement, cooling capacity, cold-weather plan and available installation space.

Why a turbine can be attractive
Compact power for a heavy vehicle
A tank has to reserve internal space for ammunition, crew, fuel, suspension components and protection. A compact powerplant can make packaging easier or leave more room for other systems. The benefit is not simply the engine’s dimensions: the transmission, air inlet, filters, exhaust and cooling system must fit as well.
Multifuel operation and supply resilience
Honeywell identifies the AGT1500 as a multifuel engine. In principle, the ability to run approved alternatives can give planners more options when a preferred fuel is unavailable. It does not mean that crews can pour in any liquid fuel without restrictions. Fuel quality, contamination, storage, filtration and the engine’s approved-fuel list remain controlling requirements.
Responsive power
Honeywell describes the AGT1500 as providing instant power. In a tactical vehicle, rapid response can help when accelerating, climbing or changing speed. The practical result still depends on transmission control, track traction, terrain and the driver’s inputs; an engine feature cannot remove those limits.
Starting in cold conditions
Cold weather raises the viscosity of lubricants, reduces battery performance and complicates fuel atomization in piston engines. Honeywell lists cold-starting capability for the AGT1500. Any real-world claim must be tied to the specified temperature, battery state, lubricant, fuel and start procedure. A different turbine or diesel can have different limits.
The turbine’s main cost: fuel, especially at idle
Fuel consumption is a central turbine trade-off. A tank may spend considerable time stationary while powering radios, sensors, climate-control equipment and other electrical loads. Burning fuel during those pauses reduces operational endurance and increases the number of refueling movements.

Honeywell says the AGT1500 Digital Electronic Control Unit provides diagnostics associated with 30% less maintenance time and 20% lower idle fuel consumption. Those numbers are benefits attributed by Honeywell to that control-unit upgrade. They are not a laboratory, like-for-like comparison against a diesel tank, and they should not be presented as a universal turbine-versus-diesel ratio.
Idle policy therefore matters. A unit that shuts down whenever tactical conditions permit may experience a different fuel burden from one that keeps engines running for immediate movement, electrical power or climate control. The same turbine can show very different daily consumption under those two policies.
Fuel logistics are a vehicle-and-army decision
Multifuel capability can help only if the fuel is available, stored safely and issued under the engine’s technical limits. A force also has to move that fuel, test it for contamination, filter it and dispose of or replace degraded stocks. Diesel commonality can simplify some fleets, but a diesel-powered tank may still require a fuel grade or quality standard that differs from other equipment.

Range figures are consequently mission-specific. Road movement, cross-country maneuver, idling, auxiliary loads, ambient temperature and terrain all change the fuel required for a sortie. A brochure range or an isolated consumption number cannot predict a unit’s result without the operating profile behind it.
Noise, heat and battlefield signature
Honeywell describes the AGT1500 as quiet, but “quiet” is not a complete signature analysis. A tank’s detectability includes exhaust temperature, hot surfaces, cooling fans, track noise, gearbox noise and the way sound travels over terrain. Load changes the turbine’s airflow and exhaust, while a diesel’s fans and combustion noise also vary with operating conditions.
Signature management is therefore a vehicle-level exercise. Camouflage, engine-bay insulation, exhaust routing, idle policy and terrain can matter as much as the basic engine cycle. A claim about one engine type should not be treated as a measured advantage unless the test conditions are comparable.

Maintenance and support burden
What the crew does
Tank crews do not improvise engine procedures. The U.S. Army directs operators to the applicable technical manuals for starting, shutdown, cold-weather operation and powerpack theory of operation. Those manuals specify checks, control settings, limits and warning indications for the exact vehicle variant.
For an Abrams, a digital control unit can provide diagnostic information, but diagnostics do not eliminate inspections, filter service, fluid checks or the need to investigate abnormal readings. A diesel’s maintenance schedule is likewise determined by its engine and vehicle manual, not by generic advice about diesel cars or trucks.
Unit and depot support
Military engines are often designed around replaceable powerpacks so a damaged or worn unit can be exchanged and returned to a higher-level facility. That approach can restore a tank quickly at the unit while shifting detailed repair to specialized workshops. It requires lifting equipment, trained maintainers, spare assemblies, test stands and a reliable process for tracking faults.
The Army’s dynamometer-testing work on M1 turbine engines illustrates the depot side of the system: engines can be evaluated under controlled loads before being returned to service. Such testing is not a substitute for crew checks; it is part of a larger maintenance chain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why diesel remains a strong alternative
Diesel remains compelling when a vehicle’s mission and support network favor its characteristics. Designers may value an established diesel supply chain, existing technician skills, familiar diagnostic methods or a particular engine’s efficiency under the planned duty cycle. Those advantages are not automatic: a diesel tank can be heavy, require substantial cooling and need cold-start aids, while a new diesel design may introduce unfamiliar electronics or maintenance tasks.

How to evaluate a turbine-versus-diesel claim
- Identify the exact engine and vehicle variant. “Turbine” and “diesel” describe broad families, not one specification.
- Define the mission cycle. Include road travel, cross-country movement, idling, starts, stops, electrical loads and ambient conditions.
- Compare installed systems. Count the engine, transmission, intake, filters, exhaust, cooling hardware and required accessories.
- Check approved fuels and supply assumptions. Confirm grades, contamination limits, storage time and refueling equipment.
- Measure support requirements. List crew tasks, unit-level repairs, depot tests, lifting equipment, spares and training.
- Separate manufacturer claims from independent tests. A stated improvement for one component is not a cross-platform benchmark.
- Use lifecycle evidence. Include fuel delivery, maintenance labor, overhaul, downtime and recovery—not just the purchase engine.
Common misconceptions
“The Abrams uses a turbine because turbines are universally superior.”
The Abrams reflects a particular set of U.S. requirements and an integrated powertrain. Its choice demonstrates that a turbine can meet those requirements; it does not establish a universal answer for every tank.
“Multifuel means any fuel is safe.”
Only fuels approved by the engine documentation should be used. Multifuel capability expands the authorized range; it does not remove filtration, contamination and handling rules.
“A percentage improvement proves turbines beat diesels.”
Honeywell’s 30% maintenance-time and 20% idle-fuel figures describe an AGT1500 electronic-control upgrade. They do not provide a controlled comparison with a diesel powerplant.

“A quiet engine makes a tank hard to detect.”
Detection depends on the whole vehicle and its surroundings, including heat, exhaust, tracks, fans, gearbox and terrain.
Bottom line for readers
Modern tank engines are selected as parts of military systems. The Abrams’ AGT1500 offers a compact, 1,500-horsepower turbine with manufacturer-described multifuel operation, cold-starting capability, responsive power and quiet operation. Its fuel demand—particularly during idle—and its specialized support needs are important trade-offs. Diesel engines can align better with another force’s fuel network, mission cycle or maintenance capacity. The defensible answer is not that one cycle always wins, but that the best engine is the one whose power, packaging, fuel, signature and support requirements fit the vehicle and the army operating it.
