That can make videos, games and other content feel more immersive, but it also leaves less inactive space for a comfortable grip. Evidence from a one-handed tapping study found touch difficulties as phone width increased and bottom bezel size decreased, though its results apply to the tested designs and tasks—not every phone or user.
Why do phones have thinner bezels?
A bezel is the border around a phone’s active display. Reducing it gives the screen a larger share of the phone’s front face. Manufacturers can use that space for a larger viewing area while keeping the overall device relatively compact; a thinner bezel does not, by itself, make the phone thinner or lighter.

Samsung’s account of the 2017 Galaxy S8 describes minimizing the top and bottom borders and removing side bezels as a way to create a compact, immersive display. The company also says engineers moved display-driver components and adjusted antennas to make room while retaining functionality. This is a manufacturer’s description of one design, not proof that every user prefers a nearly borderless screen. Samsung Global Newsroom’s Galaxy S8 design account also notes that defining the image boundary on a curved display was a design challenge.
What does “thin bezel” mean in practice?
There is no single way to reduce the visible border. Designs can use narrow borders, curved displays, camera cutouts or cameras placed beneath the display. Each changes what occupies the front of the phone, but the screen-to-body appearance alone does not tell you how comfortable the device is to hold or how reliably its edges respond to touch.

- Narrow or minimized borders: Increase the display’s share of the front without necessarily changing the phone’s external dimensions.
- Curved edges: Extend the image visually toward the sides, but may make edge placement and accidental contact more sensitive to layout decisions.
- Camera cutout: Reserves a visible portion of the display area for the front camera.
- Under-panel camera: Hides the camera beneath the display. Samsung Display describes its Eco² OLED technology as eliminating visible camera notches and bezels while increasing viewable area and improving light transmission to the camera module. These are the manufacturer’s stated goals and technology claims, not a comparative usability finding. Samsung Display’s explanation of under-panel camera technology provides its account.
Can thinner bezels make a phone harder to use one-handed?
They can contribute to a less forgiving grip, but bezel size is only one part of the experience. The width of the phone affects reach, while a bottom border can provide space to hold the device without resting a thumb or finger on active display. With less inactive margin, a grip that was safe on one design may overlap the touch surface on another.
A 2018 Applied Ergonomics study examined one-handed tapping using phones that varied in width and bottom bezel size. The tested widths were 67, 70, 72 and 74 mm; the tested bottom bezels were 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 mm. The article reported that increasing width and decreasing bottom bezel led to difficulties in touch behavior. Researchers collected task-performance, electromyography and subjective-workload data. The dimensions describe the experiment, not a universal threshold, and the reported finding does not establish how every current phone performs or quantify a population-wide effect. The study is published in Applied Ergonomics.

Do thin bezels cause accidental touches?
They can make edge touches more relevant because less of the front is safely outside the active screen, especially when a hand rests near a curved edge or corner. Whether that turns into an unwanted input depends on the phone’s hardware and software, how an app places controls, the user’s grip and the task. The available study supports concern about touch behavior under its tested conditions; it does not establish an accidental-touch rate for modern phones generally.

Software can reduce some conflicts by ignoring touches in selected regions or distinguishing a grip from an intended gesture. For example, Samsung’s One UI layout guidance recommends margins of at least 24 dp on both sides to avoid conflicts with curved edges or corners. It also documents reject zones for unwanted input and grip zones intended to block palm or three-finger touches while holding a phone. These are Samsung’s platform-specific recommendations and mechanisms, not universal rules for all phones or apps. Samsung Developers’ One UI grid guidance explains them.

How to judge the trade-off when choosing or designing a phone
Screen ratio is not enough to predict whether a phone will suit a particular person or task. Consider the external dimensions alongside the display, and pay attention to where hands meet active edges.
- Overall width and height: A large display may fit a compact body, but width and reach still matter for one-handed use.
- Grip and edge activity: Notice whether fingers or the palm naturally rest over interactive parts of the screen, and whether the device or interface accounts for those contacts.
- Task and hand position: A comfortable grip for watching video may not be the same as one for reaching controls with a thumb.
- Edge shape and interface layout: Curved edges and corners can create layout conflicts; platform guidance may call for margins or touch-rejection zones.
- Camera and sensor placement: A cutout, bezel or under-display component changes how the front is arranged. A cleaner-looking screen does not, by itself, establish a better camera or more usable device.
The design choice is a balance: a larger visible screen can improve immersion and make better use of the front face, while a physical border can offer a buffer for the hand. No bezel size or shape is best for everyone; width, grip, task and edge behavior all matter.
