Mobile indie games do not drain batteries because they are indie. They drain power when their workload keeps the CPU or GPU busy, drives a bright or fast-refreshing display, transfers data over Wi-Fi or cellular, or pushes the phone into a hot, inefficient state. The most effective player fixes are to select a battery mode, cap the frame rate, match display refresh to that cap, reduce graphics quality, and investigate abnormal usage in the phone’s battery settings.
There is no reliable universal figure for how much battery an indie game consumes. Drain depends on the game scene, frame-rate target, screen brightness and refresh rate, network activity, device hardware, ambient temperature, battery condition and operating-system behavior.

What actually uses the battery while a game runs?
A game is a continuously running workload rather than an app that wakes occasionally. Every frame requires game logic, physics, input handling, asset management and rendering. The CPU performs much of that work; the GPU turns the scene into pixels. If either processor remains highly utilized, it consumes more energy and produces more heat.

Apple’s power guidance treats CPU, GPU, display, location and networking as separate contributors to device power. That model explains why a visually simple game can still drain quickly: an aggressive frame-rate target, frequent network traffic or a bright display may dominate even when the art style is minimal.

Frame rate and frame pacing
Frame rate is how many frames the game attempts to produce per second. A 60-FPS target asks the processors to complete twice as many frames as a 30-FPS target, although the actual difference varies with scene complexity and the game’s bottleneck. Frame pacing also matters: uneven delivery can make a game feel jerky, while a stable lower target can feel better than an unstable higher one.
The game may render frames faster than the display can show them, or the display may refresh more often than the game produces frames. Both situations can waste energy. Android’s game-development guidance recommends matching the display refresh rate to the game’s target where possible; extra display refreshes provide no benefit when the game cannot supply new frames.
Display brightness and refresh
The screen is an active power consumer. Higher brightness generally requires more display power, and higher refresh rates require the panel and display pipeline to operate more often. A 120-Hz setting does not automatically make a 30-FPS game look or play like a 120-FPS game; it can simply make the display do work for repeated or unavailable frames.

Networking and background activity
Online features can add Wi-Fi or cellular transfer, radio wakeups and synchronization work. A game that downloads content, maintains a live connection or repeatedly contacts a server can use more energy than an otherwise similar offline session. Background downloads, cloud backup or notifications occurring during play can add to the same drain.
Heat and thermal throttling
Sustained CPU and GPU utilization raises device temperature. Android documents that power efficiency falls as a device heats and that thermal throttling can reduce performance. A hot phone may therefore deliver fewer frames while continuing to consume substantial power. Heat is a sign to reduce workload and pause, not evidence that a particular indie game has a fixed or unusual battery percentage cost.
Why there is no universal “indie game drain” number
Two games labelled indie can have completely different engines, frame targets, rendering paths, network behavior and display demands. The same game can also behave differently on two phones because of the chipset, panel, operating-system version, battery age, brightness and thermal design.
Apple notes that system state and external factors can change power-profiler readings. Android similarly cautions that FPS-throttling results vary by device and environmental conditions. Consequently, a claim such as “indie games use 20% per hour” would be misleading without naming the game, phone, settings, scene, radio conditions, temperature and test method.

How to stop a game from draining your phone so quickly
Apply the changes in this order. The labels differ by game and phone, so use the closest available option rather than assuming every device exposes every control.
1. Select the game’s battery or power-saving mode
Open the game’s settings and look under headings such as Battery, Power saving, Performance, Graphics or Game mode. Choose a battery preset if one exists. A battery preset commonly lowers frame rate, resolution, effects or other fidelity settings in exchange for longer runtime.
On supported Android devices, the per-game Game Mode API includes a BATTERY mode intended to extend battery life by accepting reduced frame rate or fidelity. The control is not universal: availability depends on the phone, Android implementation and game support.
2. Lower the frame-rate cap
Find Frame rate, FPS limit or Refresh target in the game’s graphics menu. Try a stable 30-FPS cap first; if the game offers 40 FPS and the device can sustain it efficiently, that can be a middle ground. Higher targets may feel smoother, but they require more frequent CPU/GPU work and can increase heat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAndroid’s FPS-throttling documentation reports that the intervention can produce up to a 50% reduction in GPU power and a 20% reduction in system power. Those are upper-bound platform figures, not a promise of a particular battery-life increase on your phone. The result depends on the game, device and conditions. Android exposes this FPS-throttling capability on Android 13 or later, subject to device and game support.
3. Match the phone’s display refresh rate
If your phone offers a system refresh-rate selector, set it close to the game’s frame-rate target. For example, a 60-Hz display setting is a logical match for a 60-FPS cap, while a lower target may allow a lower refresh option if the phone provides one. The exact menu and available rates vary by manufacturer and software version.
Android states that running the display faster than the game’s target provides no benefit in that situation while increasing display power use. Do not confuse this setting with the game’s FPS cap: both may need adjustment.

4. Reduce resolution and visual effects
Use a Low, Battery or Balanced graphics preset when available. If individual controls exist, reduce render resolution, shadows, reflections, post-processing, anti-aliasing, particle density and view distance in that order of visual importance for your game.
Lowering resolution can help when the GPU is pixel-bound; lowering simulation detail or effects can help when the CPU or GPU is otherwise busy. The exact benefit cannot be predicted without measuring that particular game. The trade-off is reduced sharpness or visual detail.
5. Reduce screen brightness and unnecessary radios
Lower brightness to a comfortable level, especially on a large or high-refresh display. If you are playing offline, airplane mode can prevent cellular and Wi-Fi activity, but it also disables online features and incoming connectivity. Do not enable it when the game requires a live connection.
6. Control heat during long sessions
Remove a thick case temporarily if it clearly traps heat, keep vents unobstructed and avoid playing in direct sun or a hot vehicle. If the phone becomes uncomfortable, performance drops, or a thermal warning appears, stop and let it cool before continuing. Cooling the device does not eliminate the work the game performed; the useful intervention is reducing the workload and allowing the phone to return to a normal temperature.
How to find out whether one game is the problem
Check the operating system’s battery report
Use the phone’s built-in battery settings to compare the game’s share with other apps over the same period. On iPhone, Apple provides app battery-use information in device settings; Android phones also provide battery-use screens, although names and history windows vary by version and manufacturer.
Look at the percentage and the time interval together. A high percentage during a long session may be expected. A game that remains near the top when you barely used it deserves further investigation.
Repeat a fair comparison
Change one setting at a time and compare similar gameplay. Record the starting and ending battery level, session duration, frame-rate cap, display refresh rate, brightness and whether the connection was Wi-Fi or cellular. Keep the scene and game mode as similar as possible.

- Compare 60 FPS with 30 FPS before changing resolution.
- Then compare the matched display-refresh setting.
- Keep brightness and network conditions constant.
- Repeat the session after the phone has reached a similar temperature.
Scene complexity, radio conditions, ambient temperature and battery condition can confound a comparison. A single short session is not enough to establish a general drain rate.
Recognize normal versus unusual behavior
Rapid drain during a bright, high-FPS, graphically busy or online session is consistent with the workload described above. Drain that continues while the game is closed, follows a recent update, or coincides with background activity points to a separate software or system issue. Check for downloads, synchronization, location use and other apps in the battery report before blaming the game itself.

Android’s platform documentation gives two useful but conditional examples:
| Android intervention | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| FPS throttling | Up to 50% lower GPU power and 20% lower system power | An upper-bound result that varies by device, game and conditions; it is not a guaranteed percentage of longer battery life. |
| Game Mode API sample using FPS and render-resolution caps | Approximately 25% power savings | A sample result from Android guidance, not a universal expectation for every game or phone. |
Power reduction is not identical to battery-life extension. Display, modem, memory and other components continue using energy, so a 20% system-power reduction does not mean the phone will last exactly 20% longer. Treat these numbers as evidence that throttling can matter, not as a promise for your session.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why lowering FPS often helps—and when it may not
Lowering the cap reduces the number of frames the CPU and GPU must prepare, which can reduce utilization and heat. It is most useful when the game is rendering continuously at a high target and the display is not providing a meaningful benefit from that target.
The saving can be smaller when the game is limited by networking, background work, a bright display or another subsystem. It may also be small if the game already fails to reach its cap. In that case, changing the cap does not remove work the device was not completing.

Why a phone gets hot while playing
Heat comes from sustained electrical work. The CPU and GPU process game logic and frames; the display emits light and refreshes; radios may transmit data; and the battery and power-management circuits also dissipate some energy. A demanding scene can keep several of these systems active at once.
As temperature rises, the phone may reduce clock speeds to protect itself. That thermal throttling can lower frame rate and create uneven pacing. Continuing to play at the same workload can prolong the hot state, so the practical response is to lower FPS or graphics settings, reduce brightness, improve airflow and pause when necessary.
Developer-facing controls that explain player behavior
If you make a mobile game, measure before changing code or art. Apple’s recommended approach is to do less work, perform necessary work more efficiently and avoid misusing APIs. Useful diagnostic categories include CPU time and instructions, GPU time, pixel luminance, location activity and Wi-Fi or cellular transfer.
Correlate a power profile with CPU, GPU and network traces, then repeat the measurement after each change. Device state and external factors can change readings, so one run cannot establish an optimization result.
On Android, frame pacing and refresh-rate matching are central to efficient presentation. Swappy, part of the Android Game Development Kit, is integrated into Unity and Unreal when enabled. Correct pacing helps a game deliver its chosen target without needlessly rendering or presenting frames outside the display’s useful cadence.
Common mistakes that waste battery
- Leaving 120 Hz enabled for a 30-FPS game: the panel may refresh more often without receiving useful new frames.
- Assuming low-detail art means low power: simulation, frame rate, networking and display brightness can dominate.
- Using a performance preset on battery power: higher fidelity and FPS normally demand more sustained work.
- Comparing unrelated sessions: a busy scene, cellular signal or hot room can overwhelm the setting change.
- Reading a platform maximum as a personal guarantee: Android’s 50%, 20% and approximately 25% figures are conditional documentation examples.
- Trying to solve demand with accessories alone: a power bank or battery case supplies more stored charge but does not lower the game’s power demand; a charger replenishes charge rather than preventing drain.
A practical decision checklist
- Open the game’s graphics or power settings and select its battery mode.
- Set a stable 30- or 40-FPS cap, then check responsiveness and pacing.
- Set the phone’s display refresh rate to match the chosen target when possible.
- Lower render resolution and expensive effects if temperature or drain remains high.
- Reduce brightness and disable radios only when the game does not need them.
- Pause when the phone is hot or throttling, and let it cool.
- Use the system battery report to check whether the game, networking or another app accounts for the usage.
- For a reliable comparison, change one setting at a time across similar sessions.
Frequently asked questions
Why do games drain my phone battery?
They continuously use CPU and GPU resources and may also keep the display bright and fast-refreshing or transfer data over Wi-Fi or cellular. The balance differs by game, device and session.
Does lowering FPS save battery?
Often it can, because fewer frames reduce rendering work, but the saving depends on the game’s bottleneck and device. Android documents up to 50% lower GPU power and 20% lower system power from FPS throttling under variable conditions; those figures are not guaranteed battery-life gains.
Why does my phone get hot when I play games?
Sustained processor, display and radio activity produces heat. High temperature reduces efficiency and can trigger thermal throttling, so lower the workload and pause if the device becomes uncomfortable.
Should I always use the lowest graphics setting?
No. Start with the game’s battery preset or a lower FPS cap, then reduce resolution and effects only as needed. Choose the lowest setting that provides acceptable smoothness and image quality for your device.
