MLB games are usually blacked out because baseball media rights are divided by geography. A club’s home television territory can reserve its games for local broadcasters, while national partners may receive exclusive rights to particular games. MLB.TV is primarily an out-of-market service, so it can block a game even when you pay for a subscription. The restriction can apply when the club is home or away and even when no local channel is actually showing that game.
The reliable fix is to check your viewing ZIP code and the specific game, identify its broadcaster, then choose the official in-market, out-of-market or national outlet that matches those rights. No single subscription removes every blackout.

What an MLB blackout means
A blackout is a contractual viewing restriction, not a failure of your internet connection or streaming device. MLB, individual clubs, regional broadcasters and national media partners divide live-game rights. Those agreements specify where a stream may be shown and which service has priority.
MLB’s subscription information describes eligibility as geographic and tied to your physical location. Location signals can include your internet protocol (IP) address, and MLB says restrictions may change. The relevant location is where you are watching, not necessarily your billing address, team allegiance or the address associated with your account.

Home television territories
Each club has a designated home television territory. If you are physically inside that territory, a game may be reserved for the club’s local broadcaster instead of the out-of-market feed on MLB.TV. This applies to the club’s home and road games. MLB also states that the restriction can remain in force even when the game is not televised in that territory; the existence of a local broadcast is not the deciding test.
National exclusivity
Some regular-season and postseason games are held for a national rights partner. Those games can be unavailable through both MLB.TV and a club’s in-market service, regardless of whether you live inside the club’s territory. The authorized outlet depends on the game and the current rights schedule.
Why MLB.TV does not show every game
MLB.TV is designed for out-of-market viewing: live or on-demand games involving teams outside the home television territories that apply to your current location. Its terms explicitly include blackout restrictions. Buying MLB.TV therefore does not create a universal license for local games, nationally exclusive games or every postseason broadcast.

For example, a fan who lives in a club’s territory can be blocked from that club’s game on MLB.TV while a viewer in another market can watch it. If the same game is nationally exclusive, both viewers may need the named national partner instead. The only dependable way to know is to check the game listing and your location together.
The 2026 in-market streaming landscape
In a guide dated March 10, 2026, MLB said 22 of its 30 clubs offered an in-market, blackout-free subscription. These products are intended to remove local blackouts inside the participating club’s home territory, but territory definitions, included feeds, supported devices, prices and renewal terms vary by club.
| Club | 2026 in-market service named by MLB |
|---|---|
| Arizona Diamondbacks | D-backs.TV |
| Athletics | Athletics.TV |
| Atlanta Braves | Braves.TV |
| Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals regional rights | MASN+ |
| Cincinnati Reds | Reds.TV |
| Cleveland Guardians | CLEGuardians.TV |
| Colorado Rockies | Rockies.TV |
| Detroit Tigers | Detroit SportsNet |
| Kansas City Royals | Royals.TV |
| Los Angeles Angels | Angels.TV |
| Los Angeles Dodgers | SNLA+ |
| Miami Marlins | Marlins.TV |
| Milwaukee Brewers | Brewers.TV |
| Minnesota Twins | Twins.TV |
| New York Mets | SNY |
| Philadelphia Phillies | Phillies.TV |
| St. Louis Cardinals | Cardinals.TV |
| San Diego Padres | Padres.TV |
| San Francisco Giants | Giants.TV |
| Seattle Mariners | Mariners.TV |
| Tampa Bay Rays | Rays.TV |
| Washington Nationals | Nationals.TV |
The list is a dated 2026 snapshot, not a permanent promise. MLB said MLB.TV could be purchased without an ESPN Unlimited subscription and that MLB and ESPN apps were among the 2026 distribution paths. App availability, packaging and pricing are season-specific, so verify the current offer before paying.

MLB Deputy Commissioner for Business and Media Noah Garden described the in-market effort this way: “Additionally, we are listening to our fans who want blackouts eliminated. MLB’s in-market streaming option allows us to remove a point of friction for the fans.” The service still follows the rights and territory terms shown for each club.

- Start with your physical location. Open MLB’s current blackout and game-availability lookup and enter the ZIP code where you will watch. Do not infer eligibility from how many miles you are from a stadium or from your team’s home/away designation. The result identifies clubs whose territories can affect that location.
- Select the exact game. Check the date, opponents and competition (regular season or postseason). A club’s usual local arrangement does not override a one-game national exclusive, a special event window or a schedule change.
- Read the listed broadcaster. The game page or current schedule should identify the local, national or league outlet. This is more useful than simply searching for the team name because rights can differ from one game to the next.
- Choose an in-market service when the club is local. If your ZIP code is inside the club’s home territory and that club offers a direct subscription, compare its current terms. Some local games may instead be available through a participating cable, satellite or telecommunications provider, including a regional sports network arrangement. Confirm the precise territory and devices before subscribing.
- Choose MLB.TV for an eligible out-of-market game. Use MLB.TV when the team is outside the territories affecting your location and the individual game is not nationally exclusive. Confirm availability first; an out-of-market subscription cannot remove a local or national restriction.
- Use the named national partner for an exclusive game. MLB’s 2026 guide says selected nationally exclusive regular-season and postseason games are provided through national partners rather than MLB.TV or Club.TV. Follow the current game listing instead of assuming your normal service will carry it.
- Check the format you actually need. If live video is blocked or unavailable, look for an official replay listing or an audio option. MLB advertises live audio without blackouts through MLB+; archived video can have separate restrictions, so inspect the listing for that game.
Choosing among the available options
| Your situation | Most likely authorized option | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Team is outside every territory affecting your location; game has no national exclusive | MLB.TV | Availability remains game- and location-dependent. |
| Team is inside your home television territory and has a direct local service | That club’s in-market subscription | Territory, price, feeds and device support vary by club. |
| Local game is carried by an existing pay-TV provider or regional sports network | Participating cable, satellite or telecom package | Provider coverage and authentication requirements differ by market. |
| Game is nationally exclusive | The rights partner named for that game | It may be excluded from both MLB.TV and the club service. |
| You only need listening access or a later viewing | Official audio or replay listing | Audio and video replay have different blackout and archive rules. |
When the blackout result looks wrong
MLB can use IP-based and other location signals. A mobile connection, corporate network, university network, public hotspot or managed Wi-Fi may identify you in an unexpected place or restrict streaming altogether.
- Confirm that the ZIP code in the MLB lookup is the place you are physically watching, not your home address or payment address.
- Compare the result on the network you will actually use. A work or public network may route traffic through another city.
- Check whether the app and your device are signed in to the same subscription account and running current software.
- Read the game’s broadcaster entry again; a national window can look like a local blackout if you check only the team.
- If a managed network blocks the stream, ask its administrator about the connection. MLB’s support guidance notes that public or managed Wi-Fi can interfere with location and streaming data.
- Contact MLB support with the game, your viewing ZIP code, device and network details if the displayed territory does not match your actual location.
Changing a router, DNS setting or network alone cannot grant rights that your location does not have. Troubleshooting can correct an erroneous location signal, but it does not cancel a contractual blackout.

Common assumptions that lead to the wrong subscription
“I pay for MLB.TV, so every game should be included.”
MLB.TV is an out-of-market product with stated blackout exceptions. Local territory rights and national exclusivity can both remove a game from its catalog.
“The team is playing away, so it cannot be blacked out locally.”
Home television territory rules can apply to a club’s road games as well as its home games. The club’s location on the day of the game does not determine your eligibility.
“There is no local broadcast, so the game should be available.”
MLB says a territory restriction can apply even when the game is not televised in that territory. The underlying rights agreement, not the channel you happen to receive, controls access.

“A streaming device or antenna will bypass the restriction.”
Hardware changes how you receive an authorized signal; they do not create rights to a blocked stream. Use the service assigned to your location and that game.
“One local subscription covers every national game.”
An in-market club service is designed for the club’s local rights. Nationally exclusive games can be reserved for a separate partner, so check each listing.
What can change during the season
Territory maps, broadcaster assignments, app distribution, package names and prices are live commercial terms. The March 10, 2026 count of 22 clubs with in-market subscriptions should be treated as a dated reference, not a guarantee for a later season or a different market. A schedule can also move a game into a national window.
Before starting a subscription, run the ZIP-code lookup, open several representative game listings and confirm whether you need live video, replay or audio. Review supported devices, provider authentication, renewal timing and the current price on the service’s own checkout page. Recheck the listing when a game is postponed or moved, because the broadcaster can change with the schedule.
The practical rule
Blackouts follow rights and geography. Identify the location-based team restriction, verify the broadcaster for the particular game, and then select the official local service, MLB.TV, national partner or audio/replay option that matches those two facts. That sequence is more reliable than choosing a subscription based only on the team you follow or the distance to its stadium.
