When Microsoft Teams shows a link without its image, the cause is usually one of five things: the page or image requires authentication, the page does not expose usable preview metadata, the image URL cannot be fetched, the problem is limited to one Teams client, or Teams is displaying a cached older preview. First test another public link and the same link in Teams web and desktop. That scope check tells you whether to investigate the website or your client.
What a Teams link preview needs
Teams can turn a website URL into an unfurled card containing an image, title and description. Microsoft’s documented Share to Teams web-app flow says a preview needs either a thumbnail image or both a title and description. In that flow, a URL that requires authentication does not receive a preview.
For site owners, the documented Open Graph fields are:
og:titleog:descriptionog:image
Microsoft also documents Schema.org JSON-LD and supported micro-capability templates for rich website-link unfurls. Metadata helps Teams understand what to display, but it cannot make a private image publicly retrievable.

Start with a scope test
- Paste a second public URL. If other links show images, the original page is the likely problem. If none do, investigate the Teams client, account or network.
- Compare Teams web and desktop. This comparison is diagnostic, not a guarantee that both clients render identically. Record which client fails.
- Check whether the page is public. Sign-in walls, VPN-only sites and images protected by cookies can prevent the documented Share to Teams flow from creating a preview.
- Copy the exact URL. A redirect, tracking variant or URL typo can point Teams at a different document than the one you tested in a browser.
Fixes for people who do not control the website
Confirm the link is shareable without signing in
Open the page in a private browser window where you are not logged in. Also open the image URL if the sender can provide it. In Microsoft’s Share to Teams flow, authentication-required pages do not receive a preview, so an internal dashboard or private cloud document may intentionally appear as a plain link.
Try the link again in the compose box
Remove the URL from the draft, wait for any preview to disappear, then paste the canonical page URL again. Avoid pasting a shortened link if the destination immediately redirects several times.
Separate a stale card from a missing card
If Teams shows an old title or thumbnail rather than no card at all, note when the website changed its metadata and test again later. Microsoft Q&A users have reported cache-like behavior and have suggested adding a changed query parameter to the URL. Those are anecdotal workarounds: the official guidance reviewed here does not define a universal cache lifetime or a guaranteed user-facing cache-reset command. Do not treat a query-string change as a permanent fix, especially if it creates a different canonical URL for analytics or security purposes.

Give the site owner actionable details
Send the exact URL, the time you pasted it, whether the page required sign-in, the old and expected image, and whether the issue occurred in Teams web, desktop or both. This is more useful than reporting only that “the thumbnail is broken.”
Fixes for website owners
Provide complete preview metadata
Place the intended values in the page’s server-rendered HTML head, not only in client-side JavaScript that runs after load. For the documented Share to Teams flow, a minimal Open Graph set looks like this:
<meta property="og:title" content="Example article title">
<meta property="og:description" content="A concise description of the page.">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/article-preview.jpg">
Use one stable, absolute HTTPS image URL. Keep the title and description accurate for the specific page. If your implementation uses Schema.org micro-capabilities, follow Microsoft’s documented schema and validate the website link before testing it in the Teams compose area.

- Good stability/attachment to monitor, laptop, and desktop scenarios
- Auto white balance and exposure compensation with HDR
- Integrated privacy shutter with usage indicator light
- Updatable firmware
- Fixed focus to cover 0.4m to 1.5m
Make the image fetchable
- Request the image URL while logged out and confirm it returns the image rather than a login page, redirect loop or error document.
- Check that the URL is absolute and remains valid after redirects.
- Make sure your host is not requiring a session cookie, signed URL that expires immediately, private network access or a special browser header.
- Confirm the page itself and the image are served over HTTPS and are not blocked by a maintenance response or bot challenge.
The documentation establishes the authentication limitation for the Share to Teams flow; it does not promise that every Teams unfurl context handles every protection mechanism identically. Test the exact sharing path your users use.
Validate structured data, then test in Teams
Microsoft recommends validating a website link’s structured data and then pasting the link into Teams to view the resulting unfurl. Validation can confirm that your markup is syntactically understandable; it cannot guarantee that a particular client will display an image if the image request is blocked.
Publish changes at the canonical URL
Update metadata on the URL people actually share. If a redirect points from an old address to a new one, inspect both responses and ensure the final page contains the intended tags. Keep a record of the old and new image URLs so you can tell whether Teams is showing a previous asset or reading a different page.

Diagnose stale or incorrect thumbnails safely
- Record the old card’s title, description and image.
- Fetch the page HTML and verify the current
og:title,og:descriptionandog:imagevalues. - Open the image URL directly without authentication.
- Paste the unchanged canonical URL into Teams web and desktop, noting the result and timestamp.
- If you try a query-parameter variation based on a user-reported workaround, treat it as a temporary diagnostic and do not replace your canonical URL without understanding its SEO, analytics and sharing effects.
There is no documented universal expiry time in the guidance covered here, so avoid promising colleagues that a preview will refresh after a specific number of minutes or hours.
Common symptoms, causes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No card at all | Private page, inaccessible image, or missing required metadata | Test logged out; inspect the three Open Graph fields and image URL |
| Title and description appear, image does not | Thumbnail URL is missing, invalid or blocked | Open the exact image URL publicly and check the og:image value |
| Old title or thumbnail | Cached preview or a different redirected URL | Compare canonical and redirected URLs; retest later; treat query-string advice as anecdotal |
| Only one client fails | Client-specific rendering or account/environment difference | Compare Teams web and desktop and report the affected client |
| Internal link never unfurls | Authentication or network restriction | Confirm whether anonymous access is possible; the documented Share to Teams flow excludes authentication-required URLs |
When you need a reliable screenshot instead of a Teams unfurl
A Teams preview is a metadata-driven card, not a guaranteed visual capture of the page. If you need an exact image of a public URL for documentation, QA or an <img> tag, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; failed loads, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and cache hits are not billed, with the result identified by X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
Or skip the browser setup
Use one GET request. The complete parameter reference is in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

Escalate with a complete report
If none of the checks resolves the problem, include the URL, whether it requires authentication, the expected metadata and image URL, the Teams client and version context available to you, timestamps, and screenshots of the compose area. For site owners, include the HTML head and the response behavior of the image URL. The available Microsoft guidance does not provide a universal client-side cache-clearing procedure for ordinary website previews, so this evidence is more useful than repeatedly clearing local app data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Teams require Open Graph tags for every link preview?
Microsoft documents Open Graph title, description and image fields for its Share to Teams web-app flow, while also documenting Schema.org-based rich unfurls. The exact behavior can depend on the sharing context.
Can I force Teams to refresh a thumbnail?
No universal, officially documented cache-reset command or expiry time is established. Retest after metadata changes; query-parameter variations are anecdotal and should be used cautiously.
Why does a private company page show no image?
In the documented Share to Teams flow, a URL that requires authentication does not receive a preview. Confirm whether anonymous access is possible before changing metadata.
