Why Micron, SoftBank and ASML stocks can fall during a chip-market sell-off

Micron, ASML and SoftBank can decline in the same chip-market sell-off even though they occupy different parts of the technology chain. Investors may simultaneously lower forecasts for chip demand, memory pricing, factory spending and technology valuations. Micron is directly exposed to the memory cycle; ASML depends on chipmakers ordering and accepting lithography systems; SoftBank is affected indirectly through the market value of Arm and other holdings.

Those are transmission mechanisms, not proof that one unidentified event caused every share-price move. No specific sell-off date, trading venue or catalyst is defined here, so the explanations below show how a sector-wide repricing can travel through each business.

Why do chip stocks fall together?

A semiconductor sell-off is often a change in expectations rather than a simultaneous collapse in every company’s latest results. Share prices discount future cash flows. If investors decide that growth will be slower, margins lower, capital spending delayed or valuation multiples too high, they can sell companies with very different current earnings.

The semiconductor supply chain is tightly connected. Chip designers and manufacturers buy equipment, build capacity, carry inventories and depend on end-market demand from servers, smartphones, cars and other electronics. A change in one link can alter assumptions about the others. A forecast for fewer chips next year can reduce expected memory prices, postpone a factory order and lower the estimated value of an investment holding that owns a chip-design company.

Demand forecasts move before reported revenue

Customers can reduce orders or pause new projects before a supplier reports a weak quarter. Analysts then revise estimates for future quarters, and investors may sell ahead of the financial statements. Conversely, a strong reported quarter does not guarantee that the next cycle will be as favorable if the market believes the result reflects a temporary shortage or unusually high prices.

Inventory and the semiconductor cycle

Chipmakers and their customers manage inventory carefully because fabrication plants are expensive and production lead times are long. When customers have more chips than they need, they can stop ordering while they consume stock. Suppliers may then face lower utilization or pricing pressure. When inventories normalize, orders can recover, but the timing is uncertain and markets often react to that uncertainty well before a recovery appears in revenue.

Capital spending and order timing

Semiconductor manufacturers decide when to add wafer-fabrication capacity, upgrade process technology or expand advanced packaging. Those decisions affect equipment suppliers, but a purchase can be delayed, rescheduled or cancelled even when the long-term need for equipment remains. The resulting gap between an eventual project and its original delivery date can matter to quarterly sales and to the stock’s valuation.

Macro and geopolitical risk

Interest rates, currency moves, economic growth and trade policy influence both demand and the price investors are willing to pay for growth. Export restrictions can limit where advanced systems may be shipped or change which customers can buy them. ASML identifies macroeconomic and geopolitical conditions, export rules, customer demand, inventories, AI demand and order timing among its risks. A broad risk-off move can therefore hit semiconductor shares even without a company-specific operational failure.

Why can Micron fall when AI demand is strong?

Micron Technology sells memory products, so its most direct exposure is the balance between memory supply, demand and pricing. AI servers can increase demand for high-performance memory, but a favorable AI trend does not remove the memory industry’s cyclical behavior. Investors still ask how much supply is coming, whether customers are building inventory and whether current prices can persist.

Memory pricing is the key transmission channel

Memory products are sold into a market where industry supply additions can have a large effect on prices. If manufacturers expand capacity or if customers slow purchases, prices can weaken even while units used in AI systems continue to grow. Because revenue and margins depend on both volume and price, a small change in the expected pricing environment can produce a large change in profit forecasts.

Strong results can coexist with a weaker share price

Micron’s investor materials described record fiscal 2026 results and management’s expectation of an even stronger fiscal 2027. Those statements describe the company’s reported performance and outlook; they do not establish why the stock moved on any particular day. A share price can fall after strong results if investors had already priced in more, if they expect future supply to rise, or if they see a higher risk that demand will normalize.

What to examine for Micron

  • Whether memory pricing is rising, flat or falling across the products that matter to Micron.
  • Customer demand and inventory levels, rather than AI headlines alone.
  • Planned industry capacity additions and the timing at which that output could reach the market.
  • The difference between Micron’s reported results, its guidance and the expectations embedded in the share price.

These checks distinguish a temporary valuation reset from a deterioration in the underlying memory cycle. They also prevent treating strong AI-related demand as a guarantee that every memory product will remain scarce or highly profitable.

Why does ASML fall if chipmakers still need new equipment?

ASML sells lithography systems and related services to semiconductor manufacturers. Its results therefore depend on customers’ capacity plans, equipment orders and delivery schedules. A chipmaker can still need more advanced tools over the long term while postponing a purchase in the next quarter because of financing, utilization, inventory or project timing.

Orders are not the same as recognized sales

Equipment companies receive orders, schedule production and deliver systems under complex contracts. The interval between an order and recognized revenue means that a change in customer timing can affect results before the long-term demand thesis changes. ASML specifically lists order timing and possible cancellations among its risks. Investors may mark down the stock when they see a lower probability that a planned order will convert on the expected schedule.

Export controls can change the addressable market

Government restrictions can affect which systems ASML may sell, to which customers and on what timetable. The issue is not limited to unit demand: a restricted shipment can alter product mix, regional revenue and service opportunities. Policy uncertainty can also make customers cautious while they wait for clarity, adding another reason for a share-price decline even when global semiconductor demand remains healthy.

ASML’s reported numbers and outlook

ASML reported second-quarter 2026 total net sales of €9.3 billion and net income of €2.9 billion. On July 15, 2026, it raised expected 2026 total net sales to €43 billion–€45 billion. These figures describe that reporting period and the company’s stated outlook; they are not a guarantee of future sales or stock performance.

ASML chief executive Christophe Fouquet said in the July 15, 2026 results release: “Ongoing AI-related investments and continued progress in AI technologies are driving demand for advanced Logic and Memory chips, further strengthening the semiconductor industry’s growth outlook.” That is management’s assessment, not an independent forecast. Even with that outlook, investors can focus on order timing, geographic restrictions, execution risk or the valuation assigned to future growth.

What to examine for ASML

  • New order intake and the portion expected to convert into revenue in the period investors are modeling.
  • Customers’ fab-expansion plans, utilization and ability to fund equipment purchases.
  • The effect of export controls on eligible customers, systems and delivery schedules.
  • Geographic concentration and the risk that a policy change affects a major market.

How does a Micron or ASML sell-off affect SoftBank?

SoftBank Group is not a memory manufacturer or a lithography-equipment supplier. Its exposure is mediated through the value of its investment portfolio, particularly Arm, alongside other technology holdings. When public technology valuations fall, the marked value of those holdings can decline, which can pressure SoftBank’s net asset value and investor sentiment.

Arm creates an indirect semiconductor link

Arm’s share price is one observable input into the market value of SoftBank’s holdings. SoftBank says Arm represents a large portion of that equity value. A fall in Arm can therefore reduce the estimated value attributed to SoftBank, even if SoftBank’s consolidated financial condition and results of operations do not change one-for-one with every daily movement in Arm shares. The relationship is an investment-valuation channel, not the same operating exposure that Micron has to memory prices or ASML has to equipment orders.

Portfolio valuation is broader than one stock

SoftBank’s results are also influenced by other listed and private investments, financing, currency movements and the general market environment. Its risk disclosures identify macroeconomic conditions, monetary policy and stock-market trends as additional influences. A semiconductor sell-off can thus matter because it changes the valuation of technology companies across the portfolio, not only because of a direct Arm repricing.

Dated valuation context

SoftBank reported an estimated net asset value of approximately ¥31 trillion and a market capitalization of around ¥14 trillion as of June 26, 2025. Those were company estimates for that date, not current values, audited investment advice or a fixed relationship between the share price and portfolio assets. The gap can widen or narrow as holdings, currencies, debt and market valuations change.

What to examine for SoftBank

  • Arm’s valuation and earnings expectations, while recognizing that SoftBank owns a broader portfolio.
  • The direction of listed and private technology holdings and how often private assets are revalued.
  • Financing obligations, cash needs and currency exposure that can amplify or offset portfolio moves.
  • Whether the market is applying a larger or smaller discount to the estimated value of SoftBank’s assets.

Micron, ASML and SoftBank: the exposures compared

Company Primary exposure in a chip-market sell-off Useful indicators
Micron Technology Direct exposure to memory-chip demand, supply, pricing and the industry inventory cycle. Memory price trends, supply-demand balance, customer inventories, capacity additions, and results versus expectations.
ASML Exposure to chipmakers’ lithography-equipment and service spending, order timing and export restrictions. Order intake, conversion of orders to sales, customer capital expenditure, utilization, geography and policy changes.
SoftBank Group Indirect exposure through the market value of Arm and other technology investments, plus financing and currency effects. Arm valuation, portfolio marks, net-asset-value estimates, monetary-policy conditions and the discount applied by the market.

The table shows why a shared price decline does not imply identical fundamentals. Micron’s earnings can respond quickly to memory prices. ASML’s revenue can be affected by a customer’s equipment schedule or an export rule. SoftBank can move because investors reassess the value of assets it owns, even when those assets’ operating results have not changed that day.

How to analyze an actual chip-market sell-off

Because the title does not identify a particular episode, use a dated checklist before assigning a cause to a decline.

  1. Define the event. Record the date, exchanges, companies and size of the move. A one-day sector drop has different possible causes from a multi-quarter downcycle.
  2. Separate results from expectations. Compare the latest reported revenue, profit and guidance with what investors were expecting, not just with the prior year.
  3. Check the operating link. For Micron, start with memory pricing and inventory. For ASML, check orders, customer capital spending and export rules. For SoftBank, review Arm and broader portfolio valuations.
  4. Look for a market-wide factor. Interest-rate changes, currency moves, recession fears or a broad technology de-rating can affect all three without a common operational problem.
  5. Check the time lag. An order delay, inventory correction or private-asset revaluation may show up in one company’s numbers later than in its share price.
  6. Use company statements carefully. Risk disclosures describe what could affect results; they do not prove that a listed risk caused a specific day’s move.

What this explanation can—and cannot—establish

The mechanisms are clear even when the catalyst is not. A semiconductor sell-off can lower Micron’s expected memory profits, ASML’s expected equipment revenue and SoftBank’s estimated portfolio value through connected but distinct pathways. It does not follow that all three companies have the same business model, that AI demand has ended, or that one company’s reported result caused the others to fall.

Without an identified date and contemporaneous evidence, it is not possible to attribute an individual decline to a particular earnings release, policy announcement, valuation change or headline. The disciplined approach is to match the suspected catalyst to the company’s actual exposure and to the time period in which that exposure affects cash flow or asset value.
