To me, it has the opposite effect: its soft, blank, toy-like look feels engineered for mass-market cuteness, and I recoil from it. That is a personal design reaction, not evidence that users generally dislike the character—and the joke about punting it into the “cursed void” is comic exaggeration, not a call for literal violence.
What Jolly is—and what it represents
Meta introduced Muse on 8 September 2026 as a personal AI agent designed to take action on users’ goals, not just answer questions. Meta said it was rolling out in the United States on iOS, Android and the web, and described interaction through WhatsApp as well. The company says Muse can work on tasks, including in the background; that is Meta’s description of the product, not an independent assessment of its performance or privacy practices. Meta’s Muse announcement
The default fuzzy avatar is called Jolly by PC Gamer and WIRED; Axios uses “Jollybot.” Those names refer to the same mascot, not two different characters. Meta also says users can create, name and style their own Muse avatars, so the criticism here is aimed at the default brand face rather than every possible Muse avatar.
Why Meta chose a character instead of a logo
Meta’s product design lead Mona Sarantakos has described the motivation in conversational terms: “it felt very odd talking to a corporate logo or entity.” In Meta’s account, creating, naming and styling an avatar became a core feature that users responded to positively. That explains the company’s rationale; it does not mean a companion-like face works for everyone. Meta’s account of Muse’s design

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters because Muse is presented as more than a chat window. An animated or furry face can suggest a companion, while an agent that may shop, book travel or act on a person’s behalf is also a tool with real-world consequences. Axios’s coverage interprets Jolly as a way to make increasingly capable AI feel less intimidating. The more consequential the delegated task, though, the more important it becomes to judge the system by what it can do and what information it handles—not by whether its mascot seems friendly. Why the cute look divides observers
A warm face—or a children’s toy?
WIRED framed the tension with the headline “Meta’s Muse Is Adults-Only. Why Does It Look Like a Kids’ Toy?” Its report says Muse is restricted to adults and quotes Fairplay executive director Josh Golin calling Jolly “so clearly a character that would appeal to very young children.” That is his criticism of the visual language, not proof that Meta designed the mascot to target children or that children are using the adult-restricted product. Harvard marketing professor Julian De Freitas offers a different kind of interpretation: cute features can make a product seem warm and less threatening. Neither observation, by itself, establishes how all users respond. WIRED’s reporting on Muse’s appearance and age restriction

Humanizing the agent—or softening caution?
Commentators disagree about what the cuteness does. PC Gamer quotes System1 chief growth officer Andrew Tindall describing the use of attraction to cute, infant-like features as a way to make new technology easier to accept. VaynerX CMO Avery Akkineni gives the more favorable interpretation: “In some ways, it does humanize the product a little bit.” These are competing readings, not measured evidence that the mascot either builds trust or makes users careless. The unresolved design question is whether friendliness helps people engage with a complex tool—or makes a system that can act on their behalf feel less consequential than it is. What the online reaction can—and can’t—tell us
Tom’s Guide reported more than 400 comments on its Instagram post announcing the Muse Charm on 28 September 2026. In its review of those comments, the outlet identified “Surveillance Tamagotchi” as the top reply, with 537 likes, and also noted positive responses. Those figures describe one outlet’s post and its comment review; they are not a representative survey, and they do not establish how popular Jolly is across the public. The mascot and the Muse Charm are separate questions
The Muse Charm is an announced wearable associated with the mascot, described in coverage as a Tamagotchi-like way to give Muse a physical presence. That concept may intensify the disagreement: a cute character can feel like a playful companion, while an AI agent’s ability to take actions raises questions about trust and delegation. The available coverage does not establish an Amazon listing, price, release availability or purchase eligibility, so the Charm is not a basis for a buying recommendation.
I can understand why Meta wants an avatar instead of a corporate logo. But Jolly’s rounded, furry blankness makes a capable AI agent feel less like a useful tool and more like a toy demanding affection. For me, that mismatch is the problem: friendliness is a design choice, not a substitute for clarity about what an agent can do.
