But stronger sales did not mean higher quarterly profit, and the company’s planned AI and infrastructure spending is substantial.
Advertising is still the reason Meta’s results matter
Meta’s scale is built around advertising across its Family of Apps. In its 2025 Form 10-K, the company reported $200.966 billion in total revenue, including $196.175 billion from advertising. The latest quarter extended that pattern. Meta reported Q2 2026 revenue of $60.80 billion, up 28% year over year. Family of Apps ad impressions increased 14%, while average price per ad rose 12%. These are complementary levers: more impressions expand the inventory Meta can sell, while a higher average price indicates stronger monetization of that inventory.
Meta also reported 3.60 billion average Family daily active people in June 2026, up 3% year over year. That audience scale gives the company a large surface for advertising, though audience growth alone does not explain revenue growth; the impression and pricing figures show how that reach translated into ad activity and revenue. How Meta says AI fits into the growth story
Meta’s explanation is that AI is improving its existing business as well as supporting new products. In the Q2 results release, founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said: “AI is accelerating our core business today, powering our next generation of products, and opening the door to entirely new enterprise opportunities. The results are already showing, and I’m optimistic about the potential ahead.”
That is management’s account, not a standalone measurement of AI’s contribution. The reported growth in ad impressions and average price per ad is consistent with a strong advertising business, but these figures do not isolate how much of the change AI caused. The defensible conclusion is that Meta attributes part of its core-business momentum to AI, while the quarter’s reported ad metrics show the performance investors can actually track.

Revenue grew, but quarterly profit fell
Meta’s Q2 2026 revenue growth did not flow through to higher net income. The company reported net income of $15.848 billion, down 14% year over year, and diluted earnings per share of $6.18, down 13%. This distinction matters for investors: revenue growth indicates that the business is selling more advertising and monetizing it at higher average prices, while net income and EPS reflect expenses and other costs as well. The quarter therefore supports a case for operating momentum, but not a claim that profitability improved alongside sales.

The investment required to pursue AI is a major risk
Meta’s AI ambitions require heavy spending on infrastructure. In its Q1 2026 outlook, the company projected full-year capital expenditures of $125 billion to $145 billion, including principal payments on finance leases, and total expenses of $162 billion to $169 billion. For context, Meta reported 2025 capital expenditures of $72.22 billion, including principal payments on finance leases. The gap between that historical figure and the 2026 outlook signals how sharply the company expects its investment needs to rise. Whether the additional infrastructure earns adequate returns is a future question; the spending plan itself is not proof that it will.

What could challenge the growth story
Ad targeting and measurement depend on outside conditions

Reality Labs is a separate, significant investment burden
Meta’s 2025 filing reported Reality Labs revenue of $2.207 billion and an operating loss of $19.193 billion, with the loss increasing year over year. Does this prove Meta stock is outperforming again?
No. The company’s latest reported metrics establish business performance, not a particular share-price return or outperformance against a market benchmark. The Associated Press reported that Meta shares dropped after the Q2 results, despite revenue growth, amid falling profit and higher costs. So the simple explanation is that Meta’s core ad business is growing through higher impression volume and higher average prices, while management says AI is helping strengthen that business. Whether that momentum ultimately rewards shareholders depends on profitability, the return on rising investment, and how the stock performs over a defined period relative to an appropriate benchmark.
