Why memory shortages can make smartphones more expensive or harder to find

Memory shortages can make smartphones more expensive or harder to find because every phone depends on mobile DRAM for active tasks and NAND flash for apps, photos and system storage. When suppliers tighten allocations and contract prices rise, manufacturers must either raise prices, accept slimmer margins, change memory configurations, favor certain models or reduce planned production.

The effect is uneven. Entry-level phones usually have the least margin to absorb higher component costs, while premium devices have more pricing headroom. Forecasts published in 2026 point to broad cost and shipment pressure, but they do not prove that every phone will rise by the same percentage or that a particular model is out of stock in your area.

What a “memory shortage” means in a smartphone supply chain

A smartphone uses two main forms of semiconductor memory. Mobile DRAM is working memory: it holds the operating system and active apps while the phone is running. NAND flash is persistent storage: it retains photos, videos, apps and system files after the phone is switched off. Marketing labels such as 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage refer to these two different resources.

The current pressure is better described as tight supply allocation and higher costs than as a total disappearance of phone memory. Suppliers are directing advanced-process capacity toward products for high-performance servers and artificial-intelligence workloads, leaving mobile DRAM allocations tight. HBM (high-bandwidth memory) is a separate product used mainly in AI and server systems; it should not be treated as the same component as a phone’s LPDDR DRAM or NAND storage.

When a supplier has limited wafers or packaging capacity, phone makers compete with other customers for contracts. A manufacturer may still be able to buy memory, but only at a higher price, with less flexibility over delivery dates or with fewer high-capacity configurations available.

TrendForce’s 11 February 2026 analysis estimated that memory historically represented about 10–15% of a smartphone’s bill of materials (BOM). Its 1Q26 reference case put memory at roughly 30–40% of BOM, illustrating how a component category can become much more important to a phone’s cost structure during a price surge.

How higher memory costs reach the price on a phone

A contract-price increase does not automatically become the same percentage increase at the cash register. Manufacturers have several choices, and they can use more than one at the same time.

Passing part of the increase to buyers

If a brand wants to preserve its normal margin, it can raise the wholesale or retail price. TrendForce reported that the estimated contract price for a reference 8GB-plus-256GB memory configuration was nearly 200% higher year over year in 1Q26. That figure describes the memory configuration’s contract cost, not a 200% increase in the price of a finished phone. Because memory is only one part of a handset, the retail effect is smaller and varies by model.

Absorbing the cost

A company can keep the listed price unchanged and accept a lower gross margin. This is more feasible for a premium phone with a higher selling price and more margin per unit than for a low-cost phone whose memory bill already consumes a large share of the price.

Changing the specification

A maker can ship a phone with less RAM or storage, remove a high-capacity variant, or make an upgrade tier more expensive. The advertised model name may remain similar even though the available configuration changes by market or production run, so buyers should check the exact RAM and storage combination.

Changing the product mix

Companies can prioritize models that sell at higher prices or have better margins and reduce emphasis on low-margin variants. That can leave a catalogue with fewer inexpensive choices even when flagship phones remain available.

Cutting planned production

If acceptable memory cannot be secured, a manufacturer can lower its build plan. Fewer units increase the chance that a popular color, storage tier or regional version becomes difficult to locate, particularly during a launch window.

What the 2026 forecasts actually measure

Several industry estimates describe the pressure, but they measure different things and should not be added together as if they were one prediction for a specific handset.

Publisher and date Measure Published estimate How to read it
TrendForce, 11 February 2026 Global smartphone production Approximately 1.135 billion units in 2026, down 10% year over year; a bear case of 15% or more A production forecast, not an audited year-end total or a stock count for a retailer
Gartner, 26 February 2026 Worldwide smartphone shipments Down 8.4% in 2026 versus 2025 A shipment forecast using a different measure from TrendForce’s production estimate
Gartner, 26 February 2026 Worldwide smartphone prices Up 13% in 2026 versus 2025 A market projection, not a guaranteed increase for every model; the release also estimated combined DRAM and SSD prices could be 130% higher by the end of 2026
TrendForce, 14 May 2026 Mobile DRAM contract prices in 2Q26 LPDDR4X average selling price up at least 70–75% quarter over quarter; LPDDR5X up 78–83% Component contract-price estimates, not retail-phone increases
TrendForce, 30 September 2026 Conventional DRAM and NAND contract prices in 4Q26 DRAM up 10–15% quarter over quarter; NAND Flash up 15–20% Market-wide memory-category forecasts, not a direct forecast for one phone

Gartner’s price and shipment projections were published on 26 February 2026, while TrendForce’s latest figures above were published on 30 September 2026. They use different definitions, time periods and methodologies. A 13% smartphone-price forecast cannot be combined arithmetically with a 70–83% mobile-DRAM contract estimate to predict the price of a particular unlocked phone.

Why entry-level smartphones face the greatest pressure

Low-cost phones generally operate with tighter margins. A manufacturer has less room to absorb a large memory increase, and buyers in this segment are more likely to reject a price rise. Gartner said the memory-driven surge would disproportionately affect basic smartphones, while premium models should be less affected because their margins are higher. TrendForce likewise identified brands that depend heavily on entry-level products as more exposed to cost volatility.

The squeeze can appear as a configuration change rather than a simple price rise. TrendForce’s 14 May 2026 analysis described 12GB as becoming the mainstream high-end configuration as 16GB adoption declines, 8GB as the mid-range core and about 4GB for most entry-level phones. Those are market-level observations, not a rule for every brand or model.

Market tier Configuration trend described by TrendForce Likely business pressure
High-end 12GB becoming mainstream; 16GB adoption declining More ability to preserve price and margin, but fewer ultra-high-memory options may appear
Mid-range 8GB remains the core configuration Brands may hold the base specification steady while changing storage tiers or prices
Entry-level Around 4GB for most models Least margin headroom; greater risk of price increases, reduced specifications or fewer planned units

Despite the shift in individual tiers, TrendForce projected average smartphone DRAM capacity at 8.5GB in 2026, up 10% year over year. An average can rise while some high-capacity variants disappear: growth in premium or mid-range devices can offset reductions in other parts of the market.

Why some phones may become harder to find

Availability tightens when component allocation and production decisions reinforce each other. A maker that cannot secure memory at an acceptable cost may limit a low-margin model, postpone a storage tier, prioritize another region or reduce the total build. If demand stays steady, fewer planned units make a particular phone harder to locate even if the industry still produces more than enough phones overall.

TrendForce’s February forecast put global 2026 smartphone production about 10% below 2025, and its 30 September update said mobile-memory costs and depleted low-cost inventories continued to weigh on production. These are industry-level signals. They do not establish the stock level of a named model at a specific store, country or carrier.

Regional availability can therefore diverge. A manufacturer may allocate limited inventory to a large market, a carrier launch or a higher-margin configuration. Shipping schedules, local demand and regulatory versions add factors that a global production forecast cannot reveal.

The situation as of 13 October 2026

TrendForce’s 30 September 2026 report said suppliers were still prioritizing advanced-process capacity for high-performance server products and that the overall DRAM market remained undersupplied. It forecast conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26 and NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20%.

The same report said the upward mobile-DRAM price trend remained in place, although the growth rate should moderate because substantial increases had already been priced in during earlier quarters. For eMMC and UFS storage used in smartphones, brands were relying largely on existing inventory for fourth-quarter production and making limited incremental purchases. That creates a mixed near-term picture: cost pressure continues, but not every mobile-storage product is becoming scarcer at the same rate.

How phone makers can manage the squeeze

  • Reprice selected models: increases may be concentrated in low-margin phones or higher-memory variants rather than applied uniformly.
  • Protect profitable products: a company can reserve scarce memory for premium or strategically important devices.
  • Reduce configuration breadth: fewer RAM and storage combinations simplify procurement and manufacturing.
  • Substitute within limits: a maker may use a different memory generation or supplier where the design supports it, but compatibility, performance and validation constrain this option.
  • Use existing stock: drawing down eMMC, UFS or DRAM inventory can support production temporarily, but it does not remove the underlying contract-price pressure.
  • Trim output: production plans can be reduced when the economics of a low-priced model no longer work.

These choices explain why a market-wide average can show rising memory capacity while consumers see fewer high-memory variants or a narrower selection of inexpensive phones.

What buyers should check before purchasing

Forecasts cannot identify the best model or the best purchase date for an individual buyer. Use the listing and the seller’s terms in your country, and check the complete package rather than reacting to a headline about shortages.

  1. Confirm the total current price and actual availability. Check whether the item is in stock for immediate delivery, back-ordered or offered by a third-party seller. A global shipment forecast is not proof of local scarcity.
  2. Verify RAM and built-in storage. Compare the exact configuration, not only the model family. More RAM is not automatically better value if your apps and usage do not need it, and storage capacity cannot be inferred from the RAM number.
  3. Check software and security support. A phone that costs slightly more but receives updates for longer can be a better ownership value than a cheaper model with a short support period.
  4. Read warranty and return terms. Confirm who provides the warranty, how long it lasts and whether returns cover defects, opened packaging or compatibility problems.
  5. Verify network compatibility. For an unlocked phone, check the supported bands and 4G/5G technology against your carrier and country. Regional variants can differ even when names look identical.
  6. For refurbished phones, inspect condition details. Look for the grade, battery condition or health disclosure, included accessories, seller identity, return window and warranty. A lower price is not useful if a weak battery or restrictive return policy adds replacement cost.

What will not solve a shortage of built-in phone memory

A microSD card or external drive can add space for photos and some files on compatible phones, but it does not increase the handset’s built-in DRAM and cannot change the supply of internal NAND storage. Many current phones do not include a microSD slot, and app-install behavior varies by operating system and model.

A “memory cleaner” app also cannot create physical RAM or storage. It may close background processes, often only temporarily, but it does not address component allocation, contract prices or a manufacturer’s production plan. Check the phone’s actual hardware and support policy instead of assuming a software tool can compensate for a lower configuration.

How to interpret headlines without overreacting

Look for three qualifications in any claim. First, identify whether the number concerns a component contract, a manufacturer’s BOM, retail prices, production or shipments. Second, check the comparison period and publication date. Third, distinguish a forecast from an observed result.

Gartner quoted Ranjit Atwal, senior director analyst, saying: “Higher prices will narrow the range of devices available, prompting buyers to hold on to devices for longer, fundamentally altering upgrade cycles.” The statement appears in Gartner’s broader device-shipment forecast and describes a possible market response; it is not a guarantee that every phone category will disappear.

The practical conclusion is narrower and more useful: tight mobile-DRAM allocation and expensive NAND can force difficult choices. Some phones may cost more, some may ship with different memory configurations, and some low-margin models may be produced in smaller numbers. Whether a phone is actually available or fairly priced depends on its tier, configuration, region, seller inventory and the manufacturer’s strategy.
