Aluminium foil helps shield many medicines from moisture, oxygen and light—conditions that can affect a drug’s quality. What looks like a tablet wrapped in foil is usually a small plastic pocket sealed with a foil lid, though some blister packs use other layered materials or all-aluminium structures.
What the foil does
Foil acts as a barrier between a medicine and its surroundings. The European Aluminium Foil Association describes aluminium foil as a barrier to moisture, oxygen and light, while a clinical reference explains that packaging is selected according to a medicine’s protection needs. The exact level of protection depends on the medicine and the package design; foil does not give every drug a fixed or guaranteed shelf life.

Light, moisture and oxygen can affect some medicines, so the package is part of how the product is protected. Packaging requirements vary: medicines do not all need the same barrier. European Aluminium Foil Association: Pharmaceutical Packaging; StatPearls: Pharmacy Packaging and Inserts.

Usually, “wrapped in foil” describes a blister: a shaped pocket holds one tablet or capsule, and a thin foil layer seals the back. Many blisters combine a preformed plastic tray with aluminium lidding foil. All-aluminium formats and other laminates also exist. The pack is a material system, not necessarily a loose sheet of foil around each tablet. European Aluminium Foil Association: Pharmaceutical Packaging.

Why put each dose in its own pocket?
Separate pockets keep doses apart and let someone see whether a particular pocket has been opened. A blister can therefore provide tamper evidence, but that is different from child resistance: a pack that shows whether a dose was pushed through is not necessarily designed to stop a child opening it.
Rules depend on the product and jurisdiction. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says certain covered over-the-counter products must use tamper-resistant packaging and lists blister or strip packs as one possible compliant format. UK guidance separately addresses child-resistant packaging for certain medicines and distinguishes reclosable packs from non-reclosable formats such as blisters. Neither rule should be read as a universal requirement for every medicine worldwide.

Why not use foil for every medicine?
Packaging has to balance the protection a medicine needs with practical considerations such as opening, dose separation, label readability and any applicable child-resistance requirements. Foil’s reflective surface can make printed information harder to read, and a blister separated from its carton may be harder to match to its medicine. Health Canada identifies these as packaging concerns for prescription drugs. Health Canada: Good label and package practices guide for prescription drugs.

Follow the storage instructions on the medicine’s label or leaflet. Some products rely on their packaging for protection, so do not assume a tablet can be taken out and stored elsewhere without consequence. The European Medicines Agency advises against opening aluminium wrappers in the specific context of relabelling certain medicines distributed in parallel, stating that the foil provides protection and is important for maintaining those products’ shelf life. That advice concerns those products and that relabelling context, rather than establishing a universal rule for every medicine. Can blister packs be recycled?
Often, it is difficult to separate the aluminium from plastic and other layers in a blister. A 2023 review describes these mixed-material packs as difficult to separate and reuse. It also discusses trade-offs in all-aluminium blister designs, including larger package dimensions and additional production and transport burdens in the cases reviewed. Those findings do not establish that one format is always environmentally better: the result depends on the package and the circumstances. Check local disposal guidance rather than assuming every blister belongs in household recycling. 2023 review: Untapped options to reduce waste from blister packaging for tablets and capsules.
