Why Measured Oxygen Production Falls Short of Theoretical Solar-Fuel Output

Measured oxygen production is usually below a theoretical solar-fuel figure for two different reasons: a real water-splitting device loses photogenerated charge and energy before oxygen forms, and the experiment may not measure or count oxygen under the same assumptions used in the calculation. A modeled efficiency is therefore a conditional ceiling, not a promised gas yield.

The gap becomes understandable when you separate four quantities that are often mixed together: an ideal conversion limit, electrical current, chemically collected gas, and the system boundary used for efficiency. Materials, interfaces, illumination, bubbles, corrosion, and gas analysis can each widen the difference.

Start with the boundary: what does “theoretical output” count?

A theoretical solar-fuel value comes from a model. The model selects absorber band gaps, optical losses, voltage requirements, reaction energetics, and a definition of which inputs and products belong in the calculation. Change those choices and the theoretical number changes, even before a device is built.

A Chemical Reviews analysis published in 2010 reported an ideal theoretical efficiency of 41% for a dual-band-gap tandem on its stated basis. That 41% is an idealized limit for the modeled tandem, not a measured oxygen-production rate and not a forecast that a laboratory sample should deliver 41% of the corresponding gas.

Solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency has a narrower meaning than a generic “solar-fuel efficiency.” It is intended for a system driven only by sunlight, with hydrogen from solar water splitting as the counted output. If a setup uses external electricity, an applied bias, or another energy input, those inputs must be included in a broader accounting. Oxygen may be collected as a co-product, but an STH percentage should not silently include or exclude energy streams that differ between experiments.

Quantity What it describes Why it cannot be substituted for another
Ideal theoretical efficiency A modeled upper bound under selected optical, electrical, and chemical assumptions It assumes losses and boundaries that a real sample may not meet
Measured STH efficiency Solar input converted to chemical fuel under a stated test configuration It depends on spectrum, intensity, area, bias, collection, and accounting
Electrode current density Charge flowing through an electrode, often reported in mA cm−2 Some charge can drive corrosion or side reactions instead of oxygen evolution
Collected oxygen rate Gas physically detected over time and normalized to a stated basis It is affected by collection efficiency, dissolution, bubbles, leaks, and analysis

Where photogenerated charge disappears

Generation and transport losses

Photons create electron–hole pairs only when their energy and the absorber’s electronic structure permit it. Excess photon energy can become heat, while photons below the absorber band gap may pass through unused. Carriers then have to travel through the absorber, interfaces, catalysts, electrolyte, and reaction zone. Defects, poor contacts, unfavorable band alignment, and resistive layers can reduce the fraction that reaches a productive surface reaction.

Recombination is the most basic loss route. An electron and a hole can annihilate in the bulk, at a defect, or at an interface before either carrier performs useful chemistry. A device can therefore show substantial light absorption or photocurrent while producing less gas than a calculation based on absorbed photons would imply.

Oxygen evolution is kinetically demanding

Water oxidation requires a four-hole reaction sequence and several surface intermediates. The oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) is consequently often slower than the hydrogen-evolution reaction. A 2026 review by Shin and Kamble calls OER a “performance-limiting step in PEC systems” when poor charge transfer and/or high recombination rates occur at interfaces.

Slow interfacial transfer raises the overpotential needed to drive OER. If the surface catalyst cannot accept holes quickly, carriers accumulate and recombine. A catalyst can lower the kinetic barrier, but it also introduces an interface whose transparency, conductivity, adhesion, and chemical stability must be adequate. The measured oxygen rate reflects all of those properties together, not catalyst activity in isolation.

Back reactions consume products

Hydrogen and oxygen can react again on illuminated catalyst surfaces or at catalytic impurities. This back reaction reduces the net gas recovered even if the primary half-reactions initially produced both gases. Gas-phase mixing, catalyst composition, and residence time in the cell influence how much of the apparent production survives to collection.

Current is not the same as oxygen

For a four-electron OER, an ideal current-to-gas conversion can be written as n(O2) = ηFIt/(4F), where I is current, t is time, F is the Faraday constant, and ηF is the Faradaic efficiency for oxygen. The equation is useful only when the current assigned to OER is known and the Faradaic efficiency has been measured or justified.

Setting ηF = 1 assumes every electron contributes to oxygen evolution. In a real photoelectrode, some current can oxidize the semiconductor, a passivation layer, a binder, an impurity, or another electrolyte species. Those electrons still appear in the electrical signal but do not create the expected oxygen molecules.

Corrosion is both a materials problem and an accounting problem

Photoelectrode corrosion can consume the same holes that would otherwise oxidize water. The 2026 review links corrosion behavior to device structure, illumination, applied bias, catalyst and passivation layers, band alignment, composition, and electrolyte pH. A stable-looking current trace can therefore hide gradual material loss if the product analysis is not performed alongside electrochemistry.

An OER measurement review published in EcoMat in 2024 gives a concrete warning: carbon can oxidize to carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide under OER-relevant conditions. Because the measured current is commonly attributed to oxygen evolution, carbon corrosion may not be obvious in the electrochemical signal. Direct gas analysis can reveal carbon-containing products and show that part of the charge was diverted.

Wired and integrated systems need different accounting

In an externally wired photoelectrode, current-based estimates can be informative, provided corrosion and Faradaic efficiency are checked. In an integrated, unwired solar-water-splitting device, the foundational efficiency review recommends physically collecting the products and relating their chemical free energy to incoming light. Treating both architectures as if they had the same measurement boundary can make one appear artificially better or worse.

Illumination and cell design can change the result

Spectrum and intensity

Artificial lamps rarely reproduce sunlight perfectly. Their spectrum, intensity uniformity, beam angle, and temporal stability affect which sub-cell in a tandem receives enough photons and how the device operates. Döscher and co-authors wrote in an Energy & Environmental Science review that illumination characteristics from artificial sources strongly influence experimental performance, with the greatest impact on tandem structures designed for optimum conversion efficiency.

A reported oxygen rate is therefore incomplete without the lamp spectrum, irradiance, illuminated area, distance or optical geometry, and calibration method. “One sun” is not a universal description unless the reference spectrum and intensity are identified. Two laboratories can test nominally identical devices and obtain different rates simply by using different spectral distributions or by illuminating different active areas.

Cell geometry and transport

Electrolyte volume, electrode spacing, stirring, membrane placement, temperature, and headspace determine how quickly dissolved gases leave the reaction surface. A gas that remains dissolved during a short run may be counted later, while a leaky or poorly sealed cell can lose gas before analysis. Product rates should state whether they are normalized to geometric area, catalyst mass, illuminated area, or total device area.

Bubbles distort both chemistry and measurement

The 2024 measurement review identifies substrate-electrode selection and gas bubbles as major contributors to reduced reliability and reproducibility. Bubbles can cover active sites, reduce the liquid–solid contact area, increase local resistance, and impede mass transfer. At high current, a bubble layer can make a catalyst appear less active even when its intrinsic surface chemistry has not changed.

Bubbles also create sampling errors. They can detach irregularly, trap dissolved gas, cross between compartments, or alter the effective illuminated surface. Gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, optical sensors, and volumetric collection each have detection limits and calibration requirements. A short experiment that reports only a single gas sample may miss transient accumulation or delayed release.

Substrate choice and protocol can reverse a comparison

Conductive substrates are not chemically invisible. They can corrode, adsorb intermediates, catalyze side reactions, or change bubble adhesion. The substrate’s roughness and porosity also alter the true electrochemical area, so a current density based on geometric area may not represent the same surface loading in two samples.

Protocol matters as well. The EcoMat review describes cases in which cyclic-voltammetry and chronopotentiometry produce different apparent catalyst rankings. A sweeping potential can temporarily access states that are not maintained at a fixed operating point, while a constant-current test can change bubble coverage and local composition over time. Comparing catalysts requires the same electrolyte, pH, loading, substrate, area definition, conditioning, scan or hold protocol, and duration.

Protection layers improve lifetime but add losses

Protective coatings and buried junctions can slow photocorrosion, yet every added layer can absorb light, add resistance, create recombination sites, or make catalyst contact less uniform. A protection strategy is successful only when the gain in stability outweighs those optical and electrical penalties.

Electrolyte pH can stabilize one component while attacking another. Bias may move carriers in the desired direction but changes the energy accounting if supplied by an external source. Interfaces must therefore be evaluated under the same illumination, bias, electrolyte, and operating time used for the claimed gas yield.

How to compare a theoretical estimate with a measured result

Use the following checklist before interpreting a shortfall:

  1. Identify the architecture. Mark the experiment as particulate photocatalysis, a photoelectrochemical cell, or a wired photovoltaic-electrolysis system.
  2. Write the system boundary. List sunlight, external bias, electrical power, heating, stirring, and any sacrificial reagents as inputs. List hydrogen, oxygen, and other products separately.
  3. Match illumination. Record spectrum, intensity, uniformity, active area, and calibration date or method.
  4. Separate current from product. Use current to estimate gas only after measuring Faradaic efficiency and checking for corrosion or side products.
  5. Collect both gases where possible. Analyze oxygen and hydrogen independently, and test for carbon-containing or other products when carbon, binders, or reactive substrates are present.
  6. Control transport. Report electrolyte, pH, temperature, stirring, cell geometry, membrane, headspace, and bubble-management procedure.
  7. Run a stability test. Compare initial and final gas rates, inspect the electrode, and report the duration rather than presenting a single early-time value as steady operation.

What the commonly quoted figures actually mean

Figure Proper interpretation What it does not establish
41% ideal efficiency Theoretical dual-band-gap tandem limit reported by a 2010 Chemical Reviews analysis on its stated assumptions It is not measured oxygen output or a universal practical ceiling
Less than 11.2% STH and less than 3,000 hours Commercialization-context figures reported by Shin and Kamble in Small (2026) They are not universal limits or direct oxygen-yield measurements
Above 15% STH and more than five years Commercialization-oriented targets described in the same 2026 review They are targets, not proof that every device meeting them has a matching oxygen rate
10 mA cm−2 A commonly used OER catalyst current-density benchmark historically associated with a 10% solar-efficiency context It is not a universal oxygen-production rate or an STH measurement

Diagnosing a mismatch in the laboratory

Observation Likely explanations to test Useful check
Large current but little oxygen Low Faradaic efficiency, corrosion, carbon oxidation, leaks, or dissolved gas Analyze all products and compare charge with collected gas
Gas rate falls as current rises Bubble blockage, mass-transfer limits, heating, or accelerated degradation Change stirring and bubble management; inspect the electrode after the run
Different labs rank catalysts differently Different substrates, scan protocols, loading, pH, or area normalization Repeat under an identical fixed-current or fixed-potential protocol
Tandem output changes strongly with lamp Spectral mismatch, nonuniform intensity, or sub-cell current mismatch Report the spectrum and calibrate irradiance over the actual illuminated area
Initial gas yield is high but long-term yield collapses Photocorrosion, catalyst detachment, passivation failure, or changing bubble coverage Track gas and current continuously, then characterize the device before and after testing

The practical conclusion

A measured oxygen yield falls short when the theoretical estimate assumes ideal absorption, transport, interfacial transfer, selectivity, and stability, while the real experiment includes recombination, OER kinetics, corrosion, back reactions, bubbles, spectral mismatch, and imperfect collection. The shortfall is not evidence of one universal defect. It is the combined result of device physics and measurement accounting.

The most defensible comparison reports collected oxygen, hydrogen, current, illumination, cell conditions, Faradaic efficiency, side products, and stability on the same system boundary. Once those quantities are separated, an apparently disappointing yield usually points to a specific loss—rather than an unexplained failure to reach a theoretical percentage.
