Why Math Anxiety Makes Problem-Solving Harder—and What Helps

Math anxiety can make problem-solving feel harder because anxious thoughts compete with the attention and working-memory capacity needed to hold numbers, rules, and intermediate steps in mind. That mechanism is plausible and supported by group-level studies, but it does not explain every learner or prove that anxiety causes every error. The most defensible approach is to work on mathematical skills and the emotional response together, then match support to the learner, setting, and goal.

Some strategies have encouraging evidence; none is a guaranteed quick fix. Regular, supported practice has the clearest link to better performance, while anxiety-focused methods can reduce distress. A short expressive-writing exercise is reasonable to try, but results across studies are mixed.

What math anxiety is—and what it is not

Math anxiety is a negative emotional response associated with math situations such as lessons, homework, tests, or being asked to calculate aloud. Across studies, higher math anxiety tends to accompany lower math performance. A 2022 meta-analysis covering 57 studies and 150 effect sizes found a mean math-anxiety/math-performance correlation of r = −0.168. That is a population-level association, not a prediction of what any one person can do.

Feeling anxious about mathematics is not proof of low ability, laziness, or a permanent learning problem. Anxiety can coexist with strong mathematical understanding, and difficulty can also come from missing prerequisite skills, unclear instruction, fatigue, language demands, attention differences, or an unsuitable assessment. Treat the feeling as information about the situation, not as a verdict about intelligence.

If anxiety is intense, persistent, or spreading to school, work, or daily decisions, a qualified teacher, school psychologist, counselor, or clinician can help assess the full picture. Math anxiety itself is not a diagnosis established by the studies summarized here.

Why anxiety can make a problem feel impossible

Solving requires a temporary mental workspace

When you solve a multistep problem, you may need to retain quantities, remember a formula, compare possible operations, monitor signs, and check whether an answer makes sense. Working memory helps coordinate those activities while you reason.

A three-level meta-analysis by Peng and colleagues combined 130 studies, 43,938 participants, and 1,355 effect sizes. It found a moderate association between working memory and mathematical problem solving: r = 0.280, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.263 to 0.314. This establishes a relationship between the two abilities; it does not show that anxiety causes a particular learner’s working-memory difficulty.

Worry can compete for those resources

Thoughts such as “I always get these wrong,” monitoring your heartbeat, or anticipating embarrassment occupy attention. Fewer resources may remain available for holding intermediate results or selecting the next step, so a familiar procedure can suddenly feel inaccessible. This is a plausible mechanism rather than a rule that operates identically for everyone.

The same 2022 meta-analysis found the negative anxiety–performance relationship and examined working memory as a possible mediator. Its mediation analysis used 15 effect sizes and reported a descriptive mean indirect effect of −0.092. The authors caution that this estimate is descriptive and not broadly generalizable. Their conclusion, stated by Finell, Sammallahti, Korhonen, Eklöf, and Jonsson, was: “Overall, the results confirm the ACT theory, WM does play a significant role in the MA-MP relationship.”

What intervention studies actually show

Different supports target different outcomes. An activity that lowers fear may not teach fraction operations; a tutoring program may raise scores without changing the learner’s physical symptoms before a test. Look at anxiety and performance separately.

School-age evidence: skill practice and therapeutic support

A 2023 meta-analysis of 17 studies involving 1,786 primary and secondary students compared skill-based and therapeutic interventions. Therapeutic interventions reduced math-anxiety symptoms with an average effect of gav = −0.51. Math-skill interventions improved achievement with gav = 0.76. For anxiety, the corresponding skill-intervention effect was gav = −0.32; for achievement, the therapeutic-intervention effect was gav = 0.12.

Those headline differences should not be treated as a contest between categories. After study quality was taken into account, differences between intervention types were not statistically significant for either outcome. The practical implication is to check whether a program includes explicit mathematics instruction, emotional support, or both, rather than assuming one label guarantees success. See the Codding and colleagues meta-analysis for the study record.

A broader 2026 synthesis

An ERIC abstract for a 2026 meta-analysis by Liu, Peng, and Li reports 51 studies and 7,673 participants across children and adults. It summarizes anxiety-reduction effects of g = −1.09 for combined math-skills and anxiety interventions, −0.71 for anxiety-oriented interventions, and −0.37 for skills-oriented interventions. For mathematics performance, the abstract says only skills-oriented interventions were effective.

Because these figures come from a database summary rather than the full primary article, use them as a reported synthesis, not as a basis for detailed claims about dosage, study quality, or which specific program to buy. The abstract is available in the ERIC record.

Another meta-analysis of varied approaches

A 2023 synthesis of 50 studies and 75 effect sizes reported average effects of g = −0.467 for reducing anxiety and g = 0.502 for improving performance. Cognitive-support and emotion-regulation approaches were effective for both outcomes in that analysis. The averages combine different ages, formats, and interventions, so they describe typical effects across studies rather than a promise for an individual. The publication is Sammallahti and colleagues’ meta-analysis.

Which supports fit which goal?

Support type Primary target What the evidence indicates Questions to ask before choosing it
Explicit math instruction and guided practice Procedural and conceptual skill; performance Skill interventions improved achievement in the 2023 school-age meta-analysis; the 2026 summary found skills-oriented interventions effective for performance. Does it diagnose prerequisite gaps, model steps, provide feedback, and include enough practice?
Anxiety-focused or therapeutic support Fear, avoidance, physiological distress Therapeutic interventions reduced anxiety in the 2023 meta-analysis; anxiety-oriented approaches also showed reductions in the 2026 summary. Is the provider qualified, and is support adapted to the learner’s age and setting?
Combined skills plus anxiety support Both distress and achievement The 2026 ERIC summary reported the largest anxiety reduction for combined approaches. Are both components delivered consistently, and how will each outcome be measured?
Retrieval practice and study-skills coaching Engagement, recall, course performance A high-school classroom study found benefits for highly anxious students during the intervention and into the next quarter. Are quizzes low stakes, frequent, and followed by corrective feedback rather than public ranking?
Expressive writing before a test Immediate test-related thoughts and feelings One 2014 experiment found a smaller high- versus low-anxiety performance gap; two later online studies found no post-test advantage over controls. Can you treat it as an optional experiment rather than a guaranteed score intervention?

A practical plan for making problem-solving easier

1. Separate the skill problem from the threat response

Write down what happens at the point of difficulty: forgetting a multiplication fact, misreading a word problem, losing track of a carried digit, or feeling panic before starting. Ask a teacher or tutor to check prerequisite knowledge with a few ungraded questions. This prevents relaxation advice from being used to cover a genuine instructional gap, and prevents extra drills from being prescribed when fear is the main barrier.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

2. Make practice frequent, brief, and active

Use self-testing rather than rereading worked examples. Solve a small set from memory, check each answer, and correct the exact step that failed. Mix previously learned items with current work so that choosing a method becomes part of practice. Keep early sessions short enough to finish successfully, then increase complexity. The goal is repeated retrieval with feedback, not a single exhausting worksheet.

3. Reduce avoidable pressure during learning

  • Preview the vocabulary and symbols before a new problem type.
  • Allow scratch paper and space to write intermediate steps.
  • Model one example, solve one together, then ask the learner to explain the next step.
  • Use private or low-stakes checks before timed or public performance.
  • Record progress against earlier work instead of comparing students with one another.

4. Add an anxiety-management component when needed

Support might include identifying catastrophic thoughts, practicing a realistic replacement statement, learning a brief breathing or grounding routine, or working with a qualified counselor on avoidance. These tools can make it easier to engage with instruction; they do not substitute for teaching the mathematics. Measure whether the learner is both less distressed and more able to complete problems.

5. Review results and adjust

After two or three weeks, compare concrete indicators: number of practice items attempted, accuracy by problem type, time spent stuck, skipped questions, and self-rated anxiety before and after practice. If anxiety falls but accuracy does not, increase or change instruction. If skills improve but panic remains severe, seek more targeted emotional support. If neither changes, reconsider the match, duration, accessibility, or underlying learning needs.

What a classroom study suggests about study habits

Pizzie and Kraemer studied high-school mathematics students and compared emotion regulation through cognitive reappraisal with study-skills support that included self-testing. Among highly anxious students, the study-skills intervention was associated with increased grades during the intervention period, with benefits extending into the following quarter. In those samples, the emotion-regulation intervention was less effective at preventing anxiety-related grade declines.

This is useful guidance for designing practice—regular retrieval, feedback, and supported engagement—but it is one classroom study, not a guarantee for every age, course, or school. The details are reported in the published study.

Should you try expressive writing?

Expressive writing is simple: before an exam, spend a few minutes writing about thoughts and feelings concerning the upcoming test, then begin the mathematics. In a 2014 experiment with 80 students, the high-anxiety versus low-anxiety performance difference was significantly reduced in the writing condition compared with sitting quietly. Park, Ramirez, and Beilock described their finding as: “Expressive writing boosts the performance of anxious students in math-testing situations.”

Later evidence makes the advice conditional. A 2025 online, two-study investigation included samples of 168 and 505 participants. Neither expressive writing nor a math-self-concept priming exercise outperformed control conditions on post-test mathematics performance. The authors discuss possible boundary conditions, so differences in timing, setting, participant characteristics, or implementation may matter. You can try writing if it feels useful and costs little, but do not treat it as an established treatment or assume it will raise a score. The newer findings are summarized in the 2025 article record; the earlier experiment is in the 2014 article record.

How to evaluate a program, tutor, or school accommodation

Use these questions before committing time or money:

  • What outcome is promised? Less anxiety, higher accuracy, better grades, or all three?
  • Who was studied? Elementary pupils, secondary students, adults, classroom groups, or individual clients?
  • What is taught? Look for explicit explanations, worked examples, retrieval, feedback, and opportunities to transfer skills.
  • What emotional support is included? Clarify whether it is general encouragement or structured anxiety-focused help from a qualified professional.
  • How long and how often? A single pre-test activity is different from sustained instruction and follow-up.
  • How is progress measured? Ask for separate anxiety and performance measures, not testimonials alone.
  • What happens if it does not work? A responsible provider should revise the plan or refer for assessment rather than blame the learner.

Limits you should keep in mind

Most findings above are averages from heterogeneous studies. Effects can vary with age, mathematics topic, classroom climate, intervention length, measurement, and study quality. Correlation does not establish that anxiety alone causes low performance, and a working-memory explanation will not fit every person. Relaxation by itself cannot repair an unlearned concept, just as more drilling may not resolve severe fear or avoidance.

The strongest conclusion is therefore practical rather than absolute: treat mathematical understanding and emotional safety as parallel needs. Use active, supported practice to build skill; add anxiety-focused help when worry, avoidance, or physical distress blocks participation; and judge success with both performance and well-being measures.
