The Global Synchronizer Foundation (GSF) was announced on July 1, 2024, with Linux Foundation support, to facilitate governance of the Global Synchronizer, an interoperability service for applications on the Canton Network. The organization announced on September 22, 2025 that it had changed its name to the Canton Foundation; it said its mission and existing members and Super Validators remained the same.

What the Foundation and Global Synchronizer do

These names refer to different things. The Canton Foundation is the organization that facilitates governance and member engagement. The Global Synchronizer is a decentralized service that synchronizes applications across the Canton Network, the network those applications use. The Foundation describes the service as enabling applications to make atomic transactions across sovereign blockchains while retaining privacy and control. Canton Foundation governance overview.

In its July 2024 announcement, the Linux Foundation said the new Foundation would facilitate transparent and fair governance of the Global Synchronizer and govern one of its nodes. That does not mean the Foundation owns or exclusively operates the whole decentralized service. The announcement also described Splice, a lab formed in the Hyperledger Foundation, as providing open-source governance for code used by Global Synchronizer nodes and enabling Canton Network participants to launch their own synchronizer version. Why the GSF was formed

The 2024 announcement framed the Foundation as a governance and collaboration structure for the Global Synchronizer. The Linux Foundation’s Daniela Barbosa, General Manager, Blockchain and Identity, said: “By providing a means to improve Global Synchronizer’s interoperability through open collaboration, we believe the Linux Foundation can help improve its utility for all community participants.” This was the Foundation’s stated rationale, not an independent evaluation of its governance model.

The release said the Global Synchronizer MainNet went live on June 25, 2024, and characterized the service as designed for financial-services connectivity and real-world-asset transactions while retaining regulatory control and privacy requirements. Those are design claims made in the announcement, not independently established performance or security findings.

Founding members named in the 2024 announcement

The Linux Foundation’s July 2024 release named the following organizations as founding members. This is a historical list from that announcement, not a current membership roster.

  • 7RIDGE
  • Bitwave
  • Broadridge
  • Calastone
  • Cumberland SV
  • Digital Asset
  • EquiLend

  • Global Blockchain Business Council
  • IntellectEU
  • Kaleido
  • LendOS
  • Liberty City Ventures
  • MPCH
  • Obsidian Systems
  • SBI Digital Asset Holdings
  • Taurus
  • Tradeweb

Digital Asset co-founder and Head of Strategic Initiatives Eric Saraniecki said in the same release: “Being able to form the GSF in collaboration with the Linux Foundation demonstrates the quality of this ecosystem and its commitment to providing fair and transparent governance for all participants.” That is a stakeholder’s view, not proof of ecosystem quality.

What the 2024 pilot claim means

The Linux Foundation’s 2024 release said a Canton Network pilot had enabled 45+ institutions to demonstrate hundreds of interoperable transactions across 22 applications. The figure describes that pilot as reported in the release; it is not a current network statistic or an independently verified outcome.

Why the GSF is now called the Canton Foundation

On September 22, 2025, the organization announced that it had changed its name from the Global Synchronizer Foundation to the Canton Foundation “to bring more clarity to our role in the Canton Network.” It said, “Our mission remains the same,” and that existing members and Super Validators remained active participants. The Foundation says it supports development and governance of the Global Synchronizer. Read the Canton Foundation’s name-change announcement.

How governance and participation are described

According to the Foundation’s overview, Super Validator nodes may vote on governance matters and code and service changes. The Foundation says it runs a node for its members and can participate in votes. This is a high-level account from the organization; it does not by itself establish how decentralized the service is in practice or provide an independent assessment of its governance.
